*looks on every Norton Anthology/textbook bought throughout my life.*

I can be concise, but I don't wanna. Heck, the whole paper is summarized in the first paragraph. I have all this quotes that make the paper look professional. I also wrote linking this topics with other topics in the course, with bibliography that was more than secondary, proving that I read it and understood it.
So yeah, it is now "This is like that just because" and then at the end of the paper: go read this and that.

Now I want quesadillas. Now that I think of it though, food does sound good and I haven't eaten in awhile.

I went to the grocery store today and pretty much bought nothing but noodles. My cart was full of ramen and mac and cheese...with yogurt and a head of lettuce in there. I must not be in the mood to cook this week. Well, that and ramen is cheap. I have also wanted to eat mac and cheese for a while now.

My mom bought home made spaghetti (not the dry one) and it's ausom. Even with just ham and cheese I can't stop eating it. Plus, we have Quesabores, different kinds of cheese in threads.
And today my grandma made gnocci herself. Hmm

Wait...MERCOSUR is in charge of passports there? If they are that's something I never knew about MERCOSUR.

Not really, it's made by the Federal Police (the Argentinian FBI, with extended jurisdiction). Same in the EU, mine was actually made here, in Rosario (there's a Spanish consulate there). By saying MERCOSUR or UE it basically means that it's the same to have a passport from any of the countries in the Union, and that you can travel within countries without need of any other passport.
For example, when you go to Brazil you have three different queues according to precedence:
1) Mercosur: the fastest one
2) Rest of the World: normal
3) USA: the worst, ie, the same as Brazilians are treated when they go to the US, since it was cataloged as a terrorist country. There have been some judicial issues with Americans in the past, which made me LOL. One of them showed the finger to the camera that took prision-like pictures of him, and was fined, I believed, for that.

At 11/19/09 02:39 PM, gumOnShoe wrote: So, as of yet, deficit spending hasn't been too bad, as far as perceivable impact, for the United States.

However, if we are not allowed to get more loans at some point, the entire government system as it stands today will collapse and we'll collectively as a people owe a bunch of countries a lot of money at rates we probably can't ever hope to pay off.

(I think we might be there already without some sort of economic boom sent directly from on high)

However, if we can't get our loans, the system crashes, but we are left with a lot of weaponry and raw resources, so while we won't have traditional capital, we'll have all sorts of other goods still.

Is it possible for a country to declare bankruptcy. Aside from not getting more loans, what are the consequences of not paying debt back?

That's basically it, and it's a biggie. A default on debt isn't really negative in the short-run, especially if the majority of the country's public debt is owned by foreign entities. The country is able to channel all those resources that went to the payment of interest into social programs, that increase local demand (considering the country is in a recession, which is most likely). However, the effect on the rest of the world if the US is the defaulter have also to be taken into account. Most likely, the whole financial system will crash, and the world will enter a global recession. Runs on the dollar will take place, and the Fed will have to start rescuing money in heterodox ways, since it cannot sell defaulted T-bills. Most likely, the Fed will use its independence to issue its own bonds to be traded by money. Also, a major liquidity injection should take place in the local financial system, since the banks will suddenly be holding lots of worthless financial assets.
There's also diplomatic problems, and issues with the assets of the US government in other countries. They will have to be pulled out or risk being liquidated.

This seems like a huge issue that we've ignored and will continue to ignore until it smacks us upside the face. I'm just wondering if we keep pretending, will it really go away?

Financial markets are quite good in predicting defaults, so you will hear of it with a few years in advance.

For the first part, First, Define "Unstable". Market-determined interest rates would be unstable in the sense that they would fluctuate the same way any price for anything under dynamic conditions changes. But I might be misreading you.

No, you are correct. I believe that strong fluctuations in the market's interest rate are not to be taken as simply as any other microeconomic signal, since its effect of output is too large to be ignored, or compensated. It would have a similar effect as fluctuations of commodities prices in export oriented economies such as Australia and Argentina: suddenly you had full employment, and a month later you had to lose the gold standard to avoid strangling the financial sector with high interest rates, which had already caused a substantial contraction of the GDP.

For the second part, deflation is not a problem except to big debtors like the government.

While I do not agree with this as I will elaborate before, the effect on the public sector's finance is crucial. A government that already has lower revenues from a recession, expanded by deflation, would have to
a) Increase taxes
b) Lower its expenditures
c) Debt

a, b, and c would all reinforce the recession. (c will not if the country is in a liquidity trap, then it might be "costless" in the short run)

If your fear is that deflation is bad because it increases the cost of credit, which you would contend is bad in a time of falling demand i would add that this increases the profits of creditors, which attracts more credit to begin with.

I disagree. The wealth of creditors indeed is an important factor in the financial sector, yet not the only one. But firstly let me talk about the debtor's situation.
When facing deflation, the debtor's ability to pay is worsened. Firstly, it is facing higher real interest rates than what had been originally agreed, and secondly, the goods that are backing up his loan suddenly might not be able to cover for it. In this case, wealth is not merely redistributed, since the lender cannot execute the loan because the collateral is simply not enough.
If the lender is a bank, it will be no secret to the depositors that it's high time to pull out. This further pressures the bank to liquidate its assets, pressuring its debtors even more. Moreover, since lending has become so risky, banks will want to increase its nominal interest rates, or even not lend anymore to be able to face the bank runs.
The credit market is frozen, and the deflationary spiral becomes stronger than ever.
