In terms of firewalls, it depends on how much time you're willing to spend. Tiny Personal Firewall (free, I think, try tucows.com) is the TOPS, but shows best results if manually configured, which can take a couple of days of getting popup alerts and creating rules. Sygate (not free unless you cheat) is IMO also a great choice, and is more user-friendly. I personally run both, but only because I was deeply involved in Direct Connect P2P program (running a hub), and there are a lot of people on there who like to play around taking other people's hubs down. I can honestly say that I feel secure being online 24/7 with that combo.
As for antivirus, AVG is pretty good, and I can recommend Panda. Norton AV is not as bad as some people think, but the Norton Firewall/Internet Security suite is a definite no. I also don't like Norton cos it sticks shitloads of Symantec crap all over your PC without asking you, and I REALLY hate that.

Magna: I totally agree with you. The series may have been worth the points for novelty value when it first appeared. But Poetic Meal was SHIT. And I don't see why a squirrel popping its head up and speaking in a squeaky voice deserves the points it gets. If anybody else produced movies like that, they'd be on 3.3 - 3.7, ie, nothing special. There's no way it deserves the ratings it gets, there are a lot more pointworthy submissions lower down the rankings than this series. Let's hope that eventually people will see sense and stop voting 4 or 5 automatically when an IllWillPress release appears on the portal...

Response to: how did you found out about ng Posted May 23rd, 2003 in General

Chasing down the latest version of Simgirl, I stumbled upon this den of iniquity, and I don't seem to have done anything else since. I've even given up my last obsession (VBScripting for Direct Connect hubs) to get deeper into Flash (which I've always liked as a program).
This place is pretty cool, apart from the usual internet imbeciles (WHO SPEKE INN CAPPITAL LETERES WIT LOTTS OF SPEELING MISTAKKES) - they seem to crop up wherever you surf...

Left front: Cutter's Choice tobacco & red rizlas. Trebor Extra Strong Mints. Fluffy stuff.
Right front: Lighter. Car & house keys. Opinel (locking blade) pocket knife. Fluffy stuff.
Back right: £3.67. Fluffy stuff.
Back left: Fluffy stuff.

And it's been like that for years (well, the money varies, but the rest stays the same)

Click on the instance of fry_over on the main stage. In the properties panel, give it an instance name (eg fred). Now, in the actions for the button, use this:

on (press) {
_root.fred.gotoAndStop(2);
}

Hope that works.

Response to: Flash sigs, possible? good? bad? Posted May 22nd, 2003 in General

Yeah, I was thinking along the lines of restricting dimensions to banner size (<500x<70) and filesize to <25kb. But I agree, it would be a nightmare for the admins to control the content, and as you say, could also kill slower machines. As I mentioned earlier, it's just an idea to kick around, if it won't work easily then why bother.... 8 )

1)
Bart: How would I go about making a half man half monkey man creature?
Mrs. Krapabell: I'm sorry, that would be playing god.
Bart: God schmod, I want my monkey man!

2)
Ned: It was a little insensitive of you giving me a sex test, seeing as my wife just passed away.
Homer: No way! When?
Ned: Six months ago. You were at the funeral. You fell into the grave!
Homer: Hehe. Oh, yeah. I saw a gopher. What a day!

Hmmm yeah I see your point, it would be open to abuse in the hands of idiots. Oh well... just thought it'd be nice to have some slick animations as sigs without having to gif everything.

Response to: Best Audio Editing Software Posted May 22nd, 2003 in Game Development

For single track editing, SoundForge is excellent. As a studio, Cubase is pretty good, but Samplitude is better. Although I do have a prejudice towards audio, rather than midi-based software

Flash sigs, possible? good? bad? Posted May 22nd, 2003 in General

Dunno if this is worth making a topic about but it's something that's been tickling my brain for a little while. I notice that some 'commercial' bulletin board/forum packages have the ability to allow users to select a .swf file for their sig/avatar (namely, Invision & phpBB, and YaBB via plugin). I was just thinking:
a) Is it possible to do this with the NG BBS (obviously with strict dimension & filesize restrictions)?
b) Would other users be glad if it was possible?

Just wondering really, this doesn't haven't to be taken too seriously but I'd be interested to see your feedback...

Been a while since I wrote on BBS... been working on what started out as a dating sim, but it seems to be developing into an adventure-type game. Gonna be a while until it's done cos I have tonnes of artwork to do for it. Certainly helping to improve my actionscripting skills though!

Response to: If you were a tree, what tree...... Posted May 10th, 2003 in General

A monkey puzzle tree

-The common name of Monkey Puzzle Tree comes from a comment from an Englishman in the 1800's, who thought it would certainly be a puzzle for a monkey to climb. As there are no monkeys native to the area in which this tree is indigenous, this name has spawned many false stories. Because of the unusual character of this tree, which captures the imagination of most people who see it, the species is often planted in gardens around the world. -
