Response to: Dogs or cats? Posted June 9th, 2003 in General

Cats
No smell, no walking in the rain, no fines for retrieving them from the dog-pound if they escape, no slobbering, farting, barking, biting or leg-humping.

My cat is a red tabby and is called Scrumpy. She's not the most friendly cat but that's what I like about cats - their independence.

Response to: UNIT UPKEEP? Posted June 9th, 2003 in General

Keep enough "Spendable Points" aside from the previous round to cover your upkeep for the end of this one. 20 archers need about 4000 points, but I think the points required per unit drops as you get a bigger army.

If you start off with the Temple and Mana Pool as priority, then get a few archers out, then boost your wizards up to 150+ you can pretty much continuously cast the Convert spell. Remember to keep enough points aside for their upkeep though, otherwise they'll die at the end of the round.
And I agree, the game gets too easy once the black kamikaze guys start appearing, they do more damage to their own troops than they do to you.

Stage: 28
Castle Power: 100,000
Archers: 350
Wizards: 200
Craftsmen: 150

It gets pretty boring when you get to this stage, you can just let the levels complete themselves as the craftsmen repair faster than the enemy can do damage.

Nope wouldn't bother me at all, although having to ask for money all the time could become annoying after a while.
BTW sorry to see your first flash got blammed, it died just as I was about to vote on it. It wasn't great, but it wasn't at all bad either. Hope it doesn't put you off creating more stuff and submitting it...

Response to: Wade needs to rant! Posted June 8th, 2003 in General

Hey Wade! You and Tom rock! Can you tell me how I can make awesome Flash games like you?

No but seriously, can't you just ban them from BBS & NG and then block them from emailing you with your firewall/their IP?

Good rant though, please post more. Good rants are hard to come by nowadays.

I know that no-one really cares about my opinion cos I only have a 110- post count but...
From what I've seen and read of format so far, it seems like he would make a good mod. However, I wouldn't be suprised if the vacancies for new mods are all taken now for the next few months, seeing as 4 have just been recruited. And I do think NewGrundling was an excellent choice, he has his head screwed on the right way round, which is always a bonus...
(not saying that the other new mods don't, but I don't know them so well)

If you aren't comfortable with it, don't do it.
And if you do decide to go for it, make sure it's special. As in, candles, flowers, all that stuff. If she's doing it for the first time, make sure that it's a night she'll look back on with fondness, rather than embarrassment.

Response to: What are your favorite older games? Posted June 8th, 2003 in General

The first 2 games I got obssessed with on arcade machines were Super Mario Bros 2 (not sure it was called that in USA but it's the game that was first out for the NES) and Nemesis (pre-runner of Salamander). If you have MAME, get the original version of Nemesis, it really is a great game for its age. SMB2 is still worth a play, too (level 7:3 is a bastard).
Memories... me and me bag of 10p's...

Definitely good choice on NewGrundling. As people have already said, he is always popping up to help with a link or info when it is most needed.
I must admit I also have not heard of the other three but then I generally only hang out in General forum and occasionally Flash forum. Ted, you seem like a smart bloke and from what I've seen of your posts so far I think you'll make an excellent mod. el_foka, you make me laugh:

If you want to get a good picture of the hatred I hold for idiocy, picture the gestapo with a flamethrower that shoots rabid dogs on fire and those dogs have lazer eyes, and spray acid, and acid is full of Kenny G music.

but I ain't gonna be getting on the wrong side of him.
TheShrike I dunno about, but again seems smart enough to do a good job. So congratulations all 4, keep the place clear of foolish twats, and well done the NG team on recruiting the new mods to keep the place clean

Response to: 3D Blam/Protect badges Posted June 5th, 2003 in General

Very very cool. Excellent work. The only problem I can see with NG implementing them is the filesize (up from 695 bytes to 27 kb). But that wouldn't bother me, and hopefully it wouldn't bother other users or the site. I look forward to seeing further news on these...

I could but none of them is as easy to get on a transparent background. Also Serra was my first angel so I have a soft spot. I agree there are better angels, Radiant & Akroma for starters, and I do have most of them, but they don't convert as easily to sigs.

Well let me explain what I feel. The next Portal entry, OddGods (here) is much more deserving of a 3.94 score. It's had time put into it, the animation is good, and there's some kind of (admittedly very strange) story line. Yet it's down on 3.19.
It just pisses me off that something as nondescript as Form Letter can be up on nearly 4, when it really has nothing going for it. I mean, did you laugh? or even smile? Did it stir up any emotions in you? Did you marvel at the animation or Flash skills? Cos I know I didn't.

Response to: Scoring System Idea Posted June 4th, 2003 in General

At 6/4/03 04:05 PM, benja_g wrote: 1) i still don't think it's a good idea to make it dependent on the batting average (one best submission)

2) I think people that made a 3+movie should get the same bonus as 4+ movie cause anyways the idea is not letting people judje and get bonus cause you are a better artist the idea was to give people with flash perspective more voting powers

1) Batting average is not based on one submission, it shows the AVERAGE scores of your movies if you have submitted 3 or more.
I'm with Nathan on this, I think users should get a bonus (either Exp points OR a boost in voting power) if they have a good average.
I still also think that deducting points for a low batting average could well deter people from submitting shite movies, although I can understand that many people would disagree with me on that.

2) The idea of giving all Flash submitters, regardless of the quality of their work, bonus extra power, doesn't make sense at all. That way is far too easy to abuse.
But, as I said up there somewhere, I do think that *good* Flash artists (who sometimes spend months creating a great movie or game) should be given some kind of incentive to keep producing excellent work. Mainly because NG relies on these kind of submissions to survive.

Response to: Scoring System Idea Posted June 4th, 2003 in General

Haven't really thought this through, but here goes:

I have to say I agree with you. Considering the fact that NG is built around (and upon) submitted Flash, it seems silly that the people who submit the Flash don't get some kind of benefit (besides having a batting average) for the hours, days or months of work they put into their creations.
I don't think basing it on review rating is a good idea, but a system that gives you more experience points (or voting power?) based either on your batting average, or on the voted rating of your movies (same thing I suppose), would be a good idea, and would maybe encourage people to try and produce better Flash. Maybe even an experience/voting power knockdown for a batting average of D+ or less, and a boost for above B+ or C+.
It really does make sense, because the guys who make good Flash have a much better idea of how much or how little work is put into a (good) Movie or Game. Whereas (no offence meant) a lot of people who have massive voting power wouldn't know a setProperty if it came up and poked them in the eye.
Hmmm so that's about it. Give the hard-working Flashers what they deserve, I say
