Looking for good Flash artists Posted June 16th, 2003 in General

OK I know a lot of people come on here and say "hey make this flash for me", or "I got this idea, put it into practise willya?"
So I'm not doing that. What I have is an idea for a dating sim/adventure game. I know basically how I want to construct the Actioscript/game engine, and I have the landscapes sorted. But. I'm not great at drawing in Flash. My characters are generally traced from jpegs, which takes time, and basically, pisses me off to the point of not wanting to finish the game.
What I'm asking is, are there any good artists out ther who would be willing to collaborate on this project? I need about 25 torsos (in fla format) of various personalities, from mechanics to shopkeepers to hot babes.
If you are interested, please email me with a sample here. If your work fits the style of the game (ermmmm.. lets say 70% cartoon/30% real) and it's used, you obviously get co-authorship on it.
If you're not interested then please disregard this topic.
I did look on the NG 'artists for hire page' but there's not really much on offer there.

My sideburns tend to come & go, sometimes I think they're OK and somtimes they annoy the f*ck out of me. Don't do beards or moustaches but to answer the question is it nice to shave, no, it's not, I hate shaving, it hurts, and it's too expensive... (razor, shaving foam, aftershave, etc etc).

If you have more than one profile (ie at login) on your machine, it's also worth a try to see if he's made them invisible for your profile. Check User Accounts to make sure you have full admin access on your account, and try logging in as any alternate accounts to see if anything new appears.

Check on the Add/Remove menu under Control Panel to see if he installed any new software. Programs like FolderGuard/SafeHouse etc allow a user to encrypt and hide files. However, to access them you will need a password, which you'll have to get from him.

The other thing is that he may just have hidden them in an obscure sub-directory. Check all your C:/ folders to see if any of them are abnormally large

Hmmm, that's hardly quite the same as actually having sex.
The few women I have spoken to candidly about the subject have told me that size does matter, but that girth is more important than length.
I can't say that I'm below average in either department, but beyond that, it's none of your business 8 )

You can try it, but if you like your face the way it is, I advise you to steer clear.

The whole advantage of Magic was that it DIDN'T take off like Pokemon & the like. You had to actually have a more than a couple of brain cells to put together a good winning pack of more than one colour.

Yes but these same people who sneer at 'geeks' were probably cheering for Gandalf and booing Saruman in the LOTR movies when they were in the cinemas.

MTG is one of the best games I have ever played. Rivalled only by Chess & Scrabble for variety. Yes, it's easy to have one or two games of Magic, not get to grips with it, and dismiss it as a result. But once you get into the intricacies of it, it's an excellent game. The only real disadvantage, which has been mentioned already, is the fact that you can spend a LOT of money buying the cards.

Response to: anyone here play magic? Posted June 12th, 2003 in General

Yup I play Magic. And I am not a sad geek, I have a partner, baby and good friends. I started off with White, but can't help but build 5-colour whenever I put a pack together nowadays. My main pack atm is primarily angels (hurrah for Akroma, Radiant, Serra, and I've just found & bought 2 Iridescent Angels, protection from all colours, how cool is that?)

I tend not to play it on the net, but with a few good friends. We've been playing it on & off now for probably 10 years, since the PC game came out. It'd be cool if WoTC produced another PC game with all the updated editions included.

Yeah I get about 2 or 3 W32.Klemms a month. Fortunately the combination of Norton on Outlook Express, and McAFEE Spamkiller (great program for blocking spam & viruses, will not download the file if it's over a set size) has meant that none get through to do their shitty business.

Most of my spam nowadays seems to be mostly about viagra, something I am not in the slightest interested in. A while back, it was all about webhosting and domain names, and before that it was porn, with the occasional bestiality or rape site coming through. Now that doesn't bother me cos I just delete them, but surely it's unethical to catch email addresses while you're surfing, and then send this stuff out. I mean, what if a 10-14 year old got some of this shit? Of course, it ain't worth complaining or unsubscribing because the number you get then just multiplies by 10.

All in all, bloody annoying

I agree with Linemaster wholeheartedly, although both my movies so far have been well-received. It is certainly true that the system is being abused, it's a shame that it can't be adjusted so that movies have to be viewed COMPLETELY before voting. And for those who keep saying STFU and Lock this topic, this is an issue that needs to be discussed. You're showing yourselves to be more n00bish than Linemaster by having such an attitude.

Response to: Campaign for 3D blam/protect badges Posted June 11th, 2003 in General

Yup I really hope that the filesize is not a problem and that these are adopted by NG. When you think how long people take to get these ranks, the least they deserve is a 3D badge. It would make NG a cooler place.

With regards to who should get them, I say stick with Elite Guard Private and upwards - but then, I am a little biased.

Keep up the good work. They deserve to be used.

Fingerpicking acoustic guitar (12 string Simon&Patrick and 6 Yamaha), Marlin Sidewinder bass, bit of keyboards (Korg or Yamaha), and the spoons.
I have been known to write and record songs, but haven't produced anything new in 2 years since the baby was born. Hopefully one day inspiration will return.

Yup. I won't blam something during the preload, but if the first 10 seconds show crappy hand-drawn text (WHY??? What do they think the Text button is for???), badly animated stick figures, or overly gratuitous swearing, then the likelihood is it'll get a 0 or 1 from me, and I should imagine that most other voters work the same way.

At 6/10/03 07:47 AM, uhoh_spagettio wrote: AHH you cant beat a good old Norton.. Although, im running the one which comes with Windows :D

If you are online whenever your computer is on, you really should get a good firewall. Norton, according to grc.com (check out this and this), is definitely not the most secure. ZoneAlarm is well rated, as are Tiny and Sygate.

Firewalls are NOT specifically designed to stop viruses. They are designed to prevent hackers from breaking into, or in some cases, seing, your computer. Some of them will automatically recognize hacker's attempts to get in: others have to be manually configured (which is preferable, so long as you know what you're doing - automatic rule creation can be a trifle dubious).

The XP firewall is not secure. If you are using only that, then get yourself another firewall. I've also found that the XP firewall can bugger up connections on occasion (in my case , it wouldn't let me connect to any of my domains via FTP).

Also, if you are worried about MS Spyware (yes, it exists), there's a little program called XP Antispy which you run once to disable all potential MS Spyware in XP. It's called XP-Antispy and is available here - I can confirm that it does not install viruses (should it be virii?) on your machine, but if in doubt, run an AV program on it.

Finally: Antivirus software. This is a separate thing from firewalls. Norton AV is good enough to stop most viruses so long as you keep it updated, but I have heard reports of some getting through, and being detected by secondary AV software. AVG is quite a new AV program, and has had good reviews and reports. There's also Panda, eTrust EZ (used to be Inoculate), and McAfee

I hope that is of some use. Unfortunately, most of these programs aren't free (Tiny is), but I think it's worth spending a little to stop some spotty teenager from sending commands to your computer telling it to turn off the CPU fan and overclock the CPU until it burns a big hole in the middle of your motherboard. Seriously, these things DO happen.

Response to: How to download games?? Posted June 10th, 2003 in Where is / How to?

Look for the swf files in your temporary internet files directory, once you've downloaded the game on NG.
I'm hoping you need to do it because you have dial-up, rather than because you want to rip them off.

Response to: Firewall Posted June 10th, 2003 in General

Tiny firewall, although it's best if manually configured, which can take a couple of days of creating rules.
Sygate is also good, and more user-friendly. If you want real security, run both.
DO NOT use Norton firewall. Their antivirus is OK, but the firewall is just dangerous.

Response to: Help me Posted June 9th, 2003 in Where is / How to?

Actually the "Splats" are a little comedy violence I added after the main movie was finished. If you turn the Splats on, each time you find a dot, you'll get a short animation in the right-hand window. If you've already unlocked all the girls, you'll have to rewind or reload the movie to see the Splats.

As to finding the dots, there are a couple of ways. If you press the TIDY button immediately after the game has loaded, it clears the right hand window (a bug I am unable to kill) - which makes the dots a lot easier to see (they're set at 4% alpha, so they are mostly transparent, but quite large).
You can also use TAB to cycle through all the buttons - you'll eventually find them that way.
There is also a very small hidden dot somewhere in a fixed location, which will unlock all secrets in the game. However, I'm not going to tell you where that is, and if you find it, please don't tell other people about it, thanks
