Let me ask you this, IF there was a god and after you died you went before him and asked for forgiveness *like everyone else* wouldn't you just feel silly all those years? Infact he might not even be very happy with you. In the end if I died a christian, but there was no afterlife or god, I would not be, and nothing would matter, however if I die an atheist and go before god... that is a different story.
Christians appreciate the value of life as much as atheists, we believe god gave us the chance to be here and he wants us to live it to our fullest, however after our loved ones die we will find comfort in knowing we will see them again in heaven, therefor logically making the healing process of a dead loved one a lot easier in my eyes.
