*sigh*
First off, the Thompson never saw use in WWI. WWI saw the advent of machine guns, but not portable ones, only mounted. Second of all, although impressive, the thompson is easily overshadowed in the second world war by the creation of the first assault rifle, the MP44, which are far more practical for use by trained soldiers with limited ammunition. As far as SMGs go, it doesn't compare to the M3 "grease gun" which was used in Korea. Lastly, Dick Tracy isn't real.
