What sort of school do you go to? In my school, you go to districts off of "What paper towel works the best?" Districts has projects like "Does Color Affect the Speed of a Tennis Ball?" I made it to state three years in a row (7th,8th, 9th), got hundreds of dollars, 40k in scholarships, and perfect 40s for a project dealing with ice melting rates. Nothing quite as ambitious as anything your school did.
