Pixel export and AS audio input? Posted September 30th, 2011 in Animation

Would anyone happen to know how to export a flash animation (cs3 and upwards) as a pixelated mov or swf? either using actionscript, via the export settings or using a thirdparty program?

Also, doubt anyone would know this but would anyone know how to use actionscript to have a flash trigger start/stop frame changes using audio input. IE have a movie play when the computers mic pics up noise, like a button but triggered by an audio input rather than a mouse input, but have it sensitive to frequency?

i love Newgrounds for there honest answers.

i would agree that it is weak, the text used being hand drawn just looks horrible, you may also want to rethink the colours used and why the screen size/ratio?

Think about what you would like it to look like and why, then research similar things, its the only way forward.

(i know i know n00bish question)

why not animate traditionally? all you need is a pegbar, lightbox, pegbar hole-punch and a camera with some sort of mount.

it may sound like alot but its not that much, the camera doesn't have to be expensive, you can make lightboxes really easily out of perspex and some wood, pegbars are around 6 bucks and you can buy paper pre punched in thousands of sheets at a time.

if you compare it to an expensive animation program and a good tablet its one hell of alot cheaper.

i have always used pressure sensitivity too, and its always been on normal or firmer so i have to press down harder, still no problems. what model is yours?

Thats not bad, not bad at all. i personally dont like to use things like blur or any effects, i just like to do things one frame at a time, however i have heard that is you shape tween between two smoke like drawings it can create some interesting results. i had a go at smoke a while back, i used it as part of my profile pic of a tankman here on newgrounds, take a look if you like.

What you have done looks really good, but it may slow things down if used alot in an animation/game.

I've had a Bamboo One CTF-430 model for a few years now and it has next to no scratches, its not like i don't use it much since i don't have a mouse, i just used the tablet. I travel with it too with my laptop along with pens and books ect almost everyday. hell, even the paint has started to wear off the outside frame of the pad, but the drawing space is as consistent as ever. what have you been doing to yours to scratch it so much?

I dont wana sell out and put boobs all over my flash just to get a higher score but im scared to put alot of work into something months and mothns and end up with something just meh.

i do "realistic" animation or atleast my drawings try to be realistic but idk maybe people dont want that.

does anybody have any tips for me to improve the quality of my work? like more effort or direc me to a really good animation tutorial site?

I really wanna make it big on newgrounds but i need some direction. like i just really wanan create like a cool 15 mintue action/sci fi classic but like i said before im scared of it being just crap. idk just really want to do something great here

Sounds to me like you want to be good at something for all the wrong reasons. Newgrounds is a place where you can upload flash so you have a place for it on the internet on a site with like-minded people who 'should' give good feedback. If you want to be good at animation then why not study it in university?

Nope. You can only save one version backwards with Flash. So CS4 can save as a CS3 document and CS3 can save as a Flash 8 document.

ah ok i use cs3 and that saves in flash 8 and cs3 format so it works for me pretty well. like i said before; its not hard to find a trial version of flash 8 for windows.

the adobe site offer a 30 day trial with the new flash cs5, after that you will have to buy it. They also do student discounts ect which are a good thing to look into if you are studying animation. There are also some free programs that are not flash but are still something to look into.

Flash 8 is mostly used for compatibility.

just because you cant use something doesn't mean its a piece of shit.

if its about compatibility, you can always save documents in cs4 in flash 8 format and in action script 2 instead of 3.

They probably use pencil and paper like most animations. with use of a linetester its then digitalised and digitally coloured on something like toonboom or after effects.

Not on the adobe site, not just because its not the latest version but also because its not even made by adobe. i found it on another site a while back on another site, its probably still out there on a few sites. if i managed to find the mac version a while back I'm sure its not that hard to find the windows version now.

Why not get the cs4 trial?

this may help http://dahakka.deviantart.com/#/d2zljsn

as for the 'flash stopped working' thing, i have had similar experiences with flash 8. its been a while since i used it but somewhere in the publishing swf settings you need to chose flash 5 formats. then after you export to mov or avi it should be ok. still i remember it being very touch and go with flash 8 pro and basic.

Response to: Flash Document Resizing Posted September 28th, 2010 in Animation

btw 942 as width in a 12:9 ratio is 942 x 706.5

i usually use 900 x 675 for this site, its easier to have a solid 900 and it works with lower screen resolutions fairly well.

yes you can force the SFW to resize when publishing on newgrounds, just make sure you get the ratio right otherwise one of the extents will continue offstage.

Alright that's what I assumed. Thanks!

just resize when publishing, i work at large 12:9 ratios too. i just resize to the max length but keep the ratio. when publishing untick the "same as document" box and put in your own size.

Response to: Realistic Character Animation Tips. Posted September 8th, 2010 in Animation

The number one thing to understand about drawing or animating the human form or any object is to be familiar with the form. i still stand by life drawing still being a very important part or representing form on paper, the real world is the best reference for representation of form in any drawn medium.

You'll see what i mean if you search for 'animation reference videos', you should come across videos of people more commonly jumping running walking ect. the understanding of motion with form mixed with the use of the 12 principles of animation can make fantastic imagery.

I prefer frame by frame to tweening and even more traditional to digital, however even people who use tweening in flash like johnnyutah still have a huge understanding about movement and form and it shines through in his work.

Response to: Have you ever noticed.. Posted August 8th, 2010 in Animation

its not that tweens are hated, they are just linked to work that just isn't to the same quality or standard as frame by frame.

ive always felt that frame by frame work is 'real' animation. it seems alot more hand crafted then tweening, that may be something to do with tweening symbols not being as heavily re-drawing dependent as fbf, tweening can often feel quite cold and machine like too.

3d animation has alot of similarities as tweeing with symbols, but it being so incredibly impractical to redraw a new computer model 12 and a half to 25 times a second - they have overcome this by giving the models a more plastic feeling, in this plasticity lies the feeling of life and freedom of rigidity. i feel like i have talked a bit to much now so i will stop.

computer screens and flash have always been high def, HD only applies to TVs, flash will work the same at any resolution.
