I know. I'm scared too.

Actually, to expand a bit, when facing a lot of flak for the Menezes incident (and when the habitual lies of the Metropolitan Police had been exposed), their next tactic was to say "What about one cop shot in X by Y on Z?".

If they want to play that game, there's Harry stanley (shot dead for carrying a table leg, 1999) and Mohammed Abdulkahar(shot in the shoulder in his home, 2006; the police tried to say it was self-inflicted, which would be impossible based on the angle of entry and the fact there were no fingerprints on the gun, yet his hands were uncovered - the officer who shot him, however, had gloves on).

Nice to see the Metropolitan Police are learning tactics from the LAPD...

Why should that be D2K? If the police screw-up and kick down a person's door at night without properly identifying themselves, why is that murder? Especially in states where if someone who was not a police officer did that, it would be self-defense?

That's the point I was making: if a person pulls a weapon on you, only for you to use force to overcome them, it is self-defence. If a plain clothes police officer does, it's murder - this is why I brought up the Menezes case: they literally walked up to a guy sitting on a train and emptied the clip of a pistol in his head.

If that was your common or garden hitman, that'd be called "an execution style killing", but in that case it was never described as that, or murder.

Assuming it went down the way the guy and his lawyers say it did, the cops just busted down his door without identifying themselves. The cops screwed up in two ways: 1) he was just suspected of growing pot, excessive force was used to execute the warrant and which directly contributed to the confusion. 2) They failed to properly identify themselves as police which produced a reasonable expectation that the person knocking down his door was there to do him harm.

If the police screw-up like this self-defense is justifiable.

Exactly - if somebody kicks your door down, it will cause the Fight or Flight response, especially with no identification. As he was growing pot, he had fair reason to believe it may be a rival dealer or a raid by a gang - depending on the version his lawyer concocts. The police are certainly expected to identify themselves not just for legal purposes, but their own safety.

yet if their safety is compromised, the person responsible is not tried fairly, and they are automatically a murderer - which reminds me of the Derek Bentley case, where the police essentially pushed for him to be hung even though he was a mere accomplice for the guy who pulled the trigger, but the shooter was too young to face the Death Penalty, so they went with what he meant when he said "Let him have it, Chris", which is open for debate (especially as Bentley had an IQ of 66 and could not read or write).

Hang on, tangient alert...

There's no such thing as "self defense" when the police are involved.

Shame, I'd have loved it if John Charles de Menezes battered the cops that shot him to death instead.

Of course, they ignore that school shootings in Europe and elsewhere in the world happened in countries where gun control is way, way tighter than in the US. They also ignore the facts that I proved which you conveniently refused to respond to: 1) Guns prevent more crime than they cause in the US 2) Gun control in the UK failed to help, and probably made things much worse, making universal calls for gun control unfounded.

God, still on that one are we, cellar?

The only thing closeto a school shooting in the UK was Dunblaine - by a disgruntled paedophile who was a member of a gun club, when handguns were free to purchase. This does not fit in with the scenario you always describe in the face of proof.

And perhaps you shoudl read this. Notice the word "drop" used regularly, not "increase."

Meanwhile, you also remain beligerantly ignorant of the difference in UK and US gun crime: in the UK, it's use of converted replicas, and the crime remains almost entirely based within the criminal fraternity (gang member vs gang member), and within very few areas: a handful of London boroughs (Hackney, Streatham and Peckham - the latter two next to each other), as well as districts of Manchester and Liverpool. Not nationwide, as in the US.

That's where the media comes in with Europeans, it's to appeal to their sensibilities rather than provide them with facts. Media in Europe will be more successful if they stroke the delusional anti-Americanism that Europeans have developed over the years to help cope with their inferiority.

So, the media is against America, rather than the fact over 15,000 Americans are filed under "firearm-related homicide", whilst over here 73 are filed under "gun murder"?

It sounds to me like:
a.) Journalists're doing their job.
b.) Maybe if there wasn't so many case of gun murder in the US, there wouldn't be a template for any news story to follow - especially in relation to school shootings.

I remember it on the news, and I remember them saying that the the kid who did it listened to Slipknot, and my mum then got pissed of because I was listening to Slipknot.
Stop trying to preach how biased British media is, because It really isn't that biased at all. Your just talking shit.

Actually, I'll step in here: the British media is pretty much bioased. The BBC toe the party line (so hasn't had a "liberal bias" since the 1970s, as various levels of conservatism have reigned), the highest-selling newspapers (The Times, The Daily Mail) are right wing, ahead of the left-wing ones (The Guardian, The Independent) by a clear margin - also, the tabloids (The Sun, The Mirror) are all right-wing and have the highest readerships of all.

So, yes, there is a bias - but not anti-Americanism, but merely sdimilar scapegoating to the US media (hell, the coverage of video games is cut & paste between the two), albeit with slightly better journalism.

If the McCanns win, I will lose all faith in the law all over the world. For one, since when is the resort responsible for every single guest? Secondly, why are they suing them? Shouldn't they be focusing on finding their daughter (especially since they're so convinced she's still alive)? Are they really going to put a price on their daughter's life?

The fact is, if they go to court and try and sue to resort operator, they can very easily turn around and state that they had a nanny service on offer, which was clearly advertised in their promotional materials, so for the Mccanns not to use it is both negligent and, as the three children were all under five, illegal.

And I bet they'd get loads of public support once they have to use the Maddie Fund not just to pay for lawyers, but paying Mark Werner's court costs as part of the settlement when they get battered in court for their nuisance lawsuit which isn't going to help them find their daughter (even though Kate knows where they buried her dismembered corpse).

Brief check, has anyone played Endless Ocean and lost a limb when tickling a hammerhead shark on the tummy?

In the UK, we just had The Byram Report, headed up by some TV child psychologist, and one of the main findings is that the ratings need to be made clearer so adults know what they're buying. Obviously the BBFC 18 ratings on GTA, Manhunt, Yakuza etc (or the 15 ratings on Resident Evil or Silent Hill) are marks out of 10. Seriously, confiscate theese people's driving licenses if they can't spot them, as they're a danger to us all.

As I keep saying, it's merely a case of new media = threat to our children's wellbeing (see also: the internet, VCR, punk, rock n roll, cinema, comics...), yet in this case it just doesn't seem to die down like the previous ones have - barring the internet, as all the social networking sites means paedophilia can be entwined with that "story."

That's why they're not leaving the UK: the Portuguese police will have to ask permission to come to the UK and do just that. If they were dumb enough to go back to Portugal, they'd probably be arrested as soon as the plane landed.

McCannWatch Latest

As half of Shannon Matthews' family are arrested for kidnapping, false imprisonment and fraud, I bet the McCanns are wishing they kept their traps shut about knwoing what they're going through. Especially as it appears there was a plan to raid the McCann Fund (last seen being utilised to pay lawyers fees).

Of course, the McCanns won't be outdone when it comes to fabricating stories about "missing" children, as they find some convenient excuse to duck out of returning to Portugal to partake in a reconstruction of the events - apparently the police are smearing them, by releasing an account of Madeleine being heard asking why the parents didn't come to her aid when she was crying the night before.

As per usual in their use of the Dead Parrot Defence, this has been turned by Kate & Gerry Manson into proof that there was an intruder in their apartment the night before. Which instantly throws up two pertinent questions:
1.) Why didn't they report this at the time?
2.) Wouldn't leaving your children unattended the very next night come across as both exceptionally negligent and completely fucking retarded? It's as if they didn't care about the safety of their children, even as if they wanted rid of them.

Meanwhile, Robert Murat is suing the following for £2m:
* Sky News
* The Sun
* The Daily Express
* The Sunday Express
* The Star
* The Daily Mail

And also has named the following:
* The Mirror
* The Sunday Mirror
* The Evening Standard
* Metro
* The News of the World
* The Scotsman

There's damn good reasoning for this, as I posted a while ago here. The interesting point is who will the press/media spin as the villain now - the guy the Sunday Mirror tried to fir up in order to gain an exclusive in a manner Charles Foster Kane would baulk at, or the parents with the inconsistency-riddled story they've changed to try and fit people up? Both of them have sent lawsuits their way, so this could be interesting.

Also, there was a story a couple of weeks agoabout someone (probably Romney) saying McCain shouldn't be eligible as he wasn't born in the US, but halfway up the Panama Canal (here) - has there been any developments in this story/wind-up, or has it been shitcanned as general garbage/mud-slinging?

Response to: Mugabe - Mugone? Posted April 2nd, 2008 in Politics

The headline news on last night's Six O'Clock News reminded me once again why I get irritated by the BBC's news coverage - the regular use of words like "possibly", "supposed", "maybed" and "perhaps" in relation to Mugabe going within 24 hours (he hasn't) or drafting a deal to hand over power (since denied by the opposition) was crass, irrisponsible journalism.

You do not use speculation as your headline story, especially when it's been shot down as such withina couple of hours of you broadcasting it - after all, you may as well headline with a story like A plane could crash later today, possibly killing 500 people, maybe landing on a built-up area and the fires might take a few hours to extinguish.

As I said earlier, they came out to offer their "support" to the parents of shannon Matthews, who was found last week a mile/less than a mile/a mile and a half (delete according to report) from her home, hidden in the bedframe of her stepfather's uncle - she's been interviewed for ten minutes each day since then, and there is a suspicion of a hoax about the whole incident at present.

But the Matthews case saw the highest police manhunt in Yorkshire since the hunt to catch Peter Sutcliffe nearly 30 years ago, which says something about the response to missing children these days.
