Canadian television is very low-budget, and I think "quirky" is a good way to describe most of the comedy shows. Those are two differences that quickly come to mind.
If you want some examples of Canadian television to see for yourself, here are some shows you can look up on youtube to see some clips:
- Corner Gas: A comedy set in a small town in Saskatchewan.
- Little Mosque on the Prairie: A comedy that's centered around a Muslim community in the prairies. It got a bit of attention in the U.S. before it aired.
- Robson Arms: A dramatic comedy focusing on the tenants of an apartment building, set in Vancouver.
- Degrassi the Next Generation: A teen drama, it's pretty popular in the U.S. If you're looking for two shows with similar markets to compare/contrast, you can probably pick this one and some American teen show like the O.C. or something (I don't know.)
- Trailer Park Boys: It's like a mockumentary focusing on people who live in a trailer park. It's better than I've described it.
- Kenny vs Spenny: A reality-tv show where two friends compete in a bunch of really messed up competitions. The loser has to undergo a humiliation, and the winner gets bragging rights, I guess.
