Would life be exterminated immeditiely? (excluding the black smokers on the ocean floor) or live for a couple of minutes or so?

I have high hopes, but there are two thing minor things I'll be skeptic about:
1: Elites as enemies, this might sound silly, but I just not be used to shooting them as enemies again, Brutes were awesome due to the fact they made better bad guys (Not to mention cool.)

2. No Master Chief I haven't played ODST yet, but the story of a squad of plain ol' soldiers is pretty irrelvent, (Ok, when I get it I'll STILL watch the cutscenes.) but for 2 years the same thing has been bugging me; what the hell happened to him? HE IS ALIVE.
