I used a photo reference for this one. Otto's comment on similarity helped me realize that I'm getting lazy, and I'm only on number 5! I DO tend to execute elements of the face in a way that I'm comfortable or familiar with when I don't feel creative or motivated enough to mix it up. I don't plan on using references for every post, but for now I think it'll help me try some new facial features/combinations. Thanks for the helpful feedback!
On a side note, I really wanted to keep going with this one! So much left to do.

"Tall, Carefree".

I feel pretty decent about this one. Everybody is suggesting I work on contrast in these sketches, so I made a point to get started on brighter/darker colors sooner in the process. As you can see I was unable to finish the face, but I feel like the pose and movement portray the topics close enough. That right leg is really bothering me though... not to mention the hair. Okay, on second thought, maybe I'm not that satisfied lol.
Happy FRIDAY!

I know what you mean! Part of it is that I still haven't gotten far enough in the 30 minutes to get to a stage of adding highlights and dark shading, but I am also purposely avoiding adding color and finer details - which unfortunately makes for a washed out and saturated image.
Thanks for the feedback!

... I really HATE the way this one turned out. Its supposed to be
"Happy, Young".. I have a lot of practice to do on pretty much every type of expression and face there is without it looking overly old, creepy, angry, and/or frightening. At a certain point this person looked like voldemort, if he had been dead for a week. Could have turned out worse! I know, the only way to get better is to keep practicing - but todays painting was a low point!

"Pampered, Envious".

30 Faces in 30 minutes. Posted August 14th, 2013 in Art

That is, one painting per day, at 30 minutes maximum for each piece. I decided to start one of those 30 day challenges for myself - mainly to work on speed and accuracy. Also I want to improve in depicting character expressions.

Taking an idea from an art stream I was watching a few days ago, (by Bobby Chiu, who I consider to be an incredible and highly inspirational artist), I picked out two features/expressions for every face or character that I will paint for this challenge. I think that will help to keep it simple and allow myself enough freedom to interpret the character's features on the fly. (I'll post the two guidelines along with every painting I post).

Goals:
1. Get as close to "finishing" a character in the allotted time.
2. Be more consistent and focused with practice, and to develop good work ethic for my personal projects.
3. Have some form of improvement in my painting style by the 30th day.

And so it begins. I am open to any comments/tips you care to give!

Somebody... Say Something!!! Posted April 29th, 2013 in Art

First of all, hello everybody. My name is Cisco. Pleased to meet you.

I wanted to get some feedback on this idea before I start setting stuff up. I have been thinking about starting an art thread for a long time, and I always thought it would be beneficial to work with other people in a "follow along" sort of way. I want to set up a thread with weekly themes and inspiration that others can participate in. An ongoing competition, if you will.

Rather than asking people to take time out of their busy schedule of watching pony cartoons and whatnot to post a review or criticism on my thread, I felt that giving people the option of playing along (as it were) could be of more interest to a wider range of artists and their according skill levels. I want to make it clear that I don't intend on mandating other people's artistic direction and commitment.

If I were to move ahead with this, would YOU be interested in stopping by in the future? Please let me know your thoughts on this idea, and I would appreciate your feedback on these four points:

(1) I want this thread to be treated more as a personal art thread and less as an obligatory collab page. What I mean to say is this: my plan for this thread is that I will plug along with the weekly themes and topics that I want to pursue, with the acknowledgment that anyone is welcome to offer critique and ideas (as in a normal personal art thread), with the added invitation that you "attempt" to outdo my effort, resulting in a mutual exchange of constructive criticism and healthy competition.

I want the thread to include elements of a competition, in that people will be working on the same theme, yet without a prize :( or winner - which hopefully won't dissuade too many people, but help highlight everyone's individual style while keeping the group on an even plane (in content). In conclusion - I may be the only one submitting to this future thread. However, I'd prefer to work with other artists in a chill environment - in a more direct way than submitting to the art portal or my personal art thread. This thread would have no penalties for missing a weekly theme/assignment and no reason to limit the collaboration to the better artists of Newgrounds. There is no pressure. Its completely up to you to join in or not. It is my wish that someone will benefit from a thread of weekly ideas and inspiration - that you can choose to keep to yourself and your own pace, or participate in publicly. I know how hard it can be to think of new directions and find artistic inspiration. There it is, in a nutshell.

(2) Does this idea belong in a different area of the forum? Would this thread overstep any organizational boundaries of the general art forum? I would prefer to keep it out of the Collaboration and Club forums - as I am not looking for anything specific or for a role that needs filling, but ya know. DGAF.

(3) How would you recommend I go about setting up a thread for this idea? A single thread containing all the weekly topics, submissions, and critique... or one thread for submissions, and separate one for ideas and topics?

(4) Has this type of thing been set up already, and am I simply ignorant of its existence?

Well I have said enough. Thoughts?

What where your starting rates? I'm thinking 5$ to 10$ a portrait and junk like that.

Be careful not to undersell yourself as an artist. Even if you end up limiting your sales by charging $40-50 per portrait - it helps in the long run to teach yourself to treat your art with respect. If a portrait happens to be a crappy one and no one buys it, take it as a learning opportunity to improve. At the very least it will give you a mindset to put more effort and care into your future work. Going into a project thinking its only worth tuppence can't be much incentive at all.

That's my opinion anyway!

Response to: Intrested in making a website! Posted March 12th, 2013 in Art

Attract everyone? Not saying your idea won't work, but based on the information you gave us, your goal is to find all the money that can be found on the internet. What kind of consumer focus are you going for? If you don't have a solid idea and business plan of what you can offer to "everyone", all you have is a vague shell of a group with little to satisfy the consumer... even if the website design and ads are amazing. Now maybe you're just holding off on releasing the content to prevent plagiarism, which is fine, but it makes sense to decide what your "goods" are, who it appeals to, and why they need it from you - before you ask for help. Designing a website is secondary, if not less important than that! Just sayin!!

Breaking into Game Art Posted March 6th, 2012 in General

This is more of a open question for anyone who feels like they can answer.

Does anyone (or anyone you know) have experience in the Game Art field?

I have recently joined a freelance collaboration game development team as a 3D artist. I feel like the experience I have with them will be a great start to a digital art career. However, I have a few questions for all you artists out there.

I notice that some companies will not even consider an applicant that lacks a BA (or whatever) in fine art, game art, etc. So my question for you all is: are you one of the lucky people to have a career in art? If you are, I would love to hear how you got started and promoted yourself and your work.

Any comments are welcome. I'll post some of the my work from the team project in the future for critique.
