Your forms are solid; very solid. You're selling yourself way too short saying you don't know what you're doing.
The biggest issue I see with them is the contrast. I know there are a lot of people who suggest not using full whites or full blacks but you're only using roughly the middle half of the grayscale on your wip. It's making the image way muddier than it actually is.

Appreciate it! And thanks for pointing that out. I tried putting some colors over the painting in an overlay/hardlight layer with the low contrast portrait, and I just lost the detail.
Here is an update, and I took into account your comments about the contrast. I will have to tweak it around a bit before I'm satisfied with the levels, but it's looking better!

more of the same

These have a nice look to them. The style is very similar to Eric Carle's work. If you don't know him, look up his work! I'm sure his stuff would be helpful if you're looking for inspiration!

This is the background I'm painting for the portrait, also WIP. Its low quality here btw.
Any thoughts? Most of you know what you're doing, unlike myself.

Good, I suggest you stick with the newgrounds form. You say your looking for a smaller audience for the time being you won't get one anywhere right now. I don't mean that offensively to newgrounds what I mean is at the moment you may get one, two or three comments on your drawing, out of those it's pretty much guaranteed that only one will be worth reading the other will be trying to hirer you to work for free. You can't get much smaller than that! Well you can you could get a pen pal. But again daily reviews can't be guaranteed and if the same person who has been reviewing your pictures daily has a emergency there review could just be.... sorry don't have time it reminds me of the one you did yesterday! Not good because there is no fresh minds about. At with newgrounds there is still that chance.

Zane

Thanks for the comment.
I am definitely leaning more towards a "pen-pal" group as you suggested. Sort of a mentor/pupil relationship, but working both ways, if that makes sense. My hope would be that the members would reap what they sow, as it were, meaning they would have to be willing to give feedback to receive feedback on their own progress. At least that would be the underlying philosophy of the group.

Hey everyone,

I am an artist looking to build constructive and educational connections with other artists here on the forums. My idea is to work closely with other artists who are interested in giving and receiving (almost daily) feedback between each other.
The reason I think the open art forum is insufficient to provide this feedback I am looking for, is because there are no real consistencies with audiences, and progression is hard to convey to people who have not seen my previous work. I know personal art threads work for some people, but I am interested in a smaller audience for the time being. I believe a personal level of learning is more beneficial to all involved.
This could be anything from a one-on-one team-up to a small group of artists who can challenge and encourage each other to become better artists. Communication could be email based, dropbox, or even newgrounds.

I'm open to suggestions.

DONE! Hahaa.... a few days late. Almost didn't make it through even 30 days. Based on what I've learned over these past few days, I'm probably going to try a new approach to get myself to commit to long term projects. I need to focus more on WANTING to draw, over the HAVE to part. Time to stop being a pussy, and convince myself that I WANT to draw all the time!

This one is good, but what leapt out at me is that to make the expression, you've moved his whole eye up instead of the eyebrow

Haha! I think part of it is also that I didn't pay too much attention to it's placement when I was laying out the base values. Or maybe this dude just doesn't have eye sockets. Either way.. now looking back its pretty easy to see which days I was feeling inspired or not to care about what I was drawing. However, I feel like the days where I can just sit back and draw without thinking about it or care about time passing are when I come up with the drawings that I'm most satisfied with. Sometimes its just about turning off your brain to get into the groove, but I guess I still need some refinement when that happens to me lol. Thanks for the feedback.

Not too happy with the proportions, but I got to experiment with a lighter background and I had time to work on smoothing out the strokes.
