I don't intend on buying that particular amp, I was just commenting on what I used it for. It made me realise I need a bigger amp tho. I wouldn't get a Marshall anyways.

So. The other day I tried a Marshall Valvestate at a rehearsal room. It had a pretty decent clean sound, and an okay chorus. Didn't bother with the distortion cause I get what I need from my pedal.
I think I need a bigger amp... also money.

I sincerely wish you good luck. As sincere as a post on an internet forum can be, at least :P

Perhaps you could start with something a bit simpler, though. Your project is very ambitious.

Besides, if you play power chords for years you'll probably get bored and start learning other things, even if you don't know what they're called. And if you don't get bored then you'll be the best power-chorder ever, which isn't necesarilly a bad thing :P.

Really, it's up to you to decide what guitar to get, all we can do is tell you which are the ones we think are better.

As I said, it's the dude who plays the solo at about 3:00. Notice how when he plays the higher notes, he plays them in his top strings (top as in nearer to his head)

Chords are fun for the first year but you will eventually get the point where you will be single picking notes and that shouldn't be holding you back no matter how you like the strings positioned from top to bottom.

what

Chords are not something you stop doing after your first year, they are in fact much more complex than picking single notes.

Also if I understand correctly, the way he's playing is the same as one of Roger Water's accompanying guitarists. (observe the solo at about three minutes in) It doesn't seem to be holding him back.

Rush has some fun basslines/solos, but usually their music is pretty awful. Try some Serú Girán songs, Pedro Aznar is a beast. check out this solo.

Recently I've been trying to expand my facility improvising in the lydian mode, since I mostly stick to dorian/minor/mixolydian shapes. The mere fact of having scale degrees in different places will make for some interesting melodies.

I need to get into the modes of the melodic minor scale, I haven't been playing a lot lately.

holy shit Les Paul died on Thursday. And I just found out.

A sad day indeed, Les Paul was a genius, without him, popular music wouldn't be what it is, and not only for the guitar he may or not have invented that carries his name.

The best thing I can say for Yngwie is that... well.. um, nope, nothing.
He was sort of a guilty pleasure for me for a while, though, but even then I realized he was pretty awful.

I have an Epi SG, and it serves me well. I like how it sounds, and how it plays. I think I have snapped one or two string since I bought it, almost three years ago, and never since I switched to 0.10 strings. I think Ibanez is a pretty good brand, their guitar have very fast necks and a good distorted tone, I wouldn't mind having an RG, but I hate the clean tone of every Ibanez I've played. As for Les Pauls, the fact that Robert Fripp, Jan Akkerman, Jimmy Page and Steve Hackett among maaany others have gotten such incredible souds of them I think means they can't be that terrible.

Now, can we just drop the subject, like, forever?

The other day I finished learning Fracture. It's definitely the hardest tune I've ever played. it's over three straight minutes of semiquavers at about 135 BPM with a lot of string skipping, all with alternate picking, shifting between 4/4 and 10/8.

Take it somewhere else, your thread would probably get locked. If you must, though, you can upload a screen capture of the tab, if it's not too long or post it in another site and link to it.

You don't need to know theory to write songs, it just helps. A lot. Basically the amount of talent you have is inversely proportional to the theory you need to know to write something awesome, if I may oversimplify.

20 bucks? you thief! :P

I suggest you teach him songs with chords rather than riffs, or maybe a mix of both (Back in black, for example) so he can learn how to switch chords quickly

There are no set rules. There are a lot of people out there saying there's a "right way" of playing the guitar, but that's utter bullshit. Example: "How to hold a pick properly". Tons of people claiming there is a correct way to hold one while actually you should just do what's most comfortable to you. This applies to everything in guitarland, play the way that suits you.

There's also the fact that playing with a bad technique can harm you in the long run, so your advice is not always the best. It would truly suck not being able to play after, say 30 years because you held the pick wrong all along :P

Right, I need to know about jazz voicings which my director told me does not include the root note, and he says I have to play them pretty high up on the neck.

First, you need to learn what frets are what notes all over the fretboard, then learn a bunch of chords with their different tensions (11ths, 13ths, 9ths, etc), then learn the way they're played on the guitar, and their inversions. Taking the root note out will be pretty easy after that.

Good luck!

I have guitars and a piano. I don't really have a process yet, since it's the first time I attempt something like this. So far I'm thinking of separating the strings and winds in groups and write those parts in a grand staff (treble and bass clef) so I can see what's going on more clearly, but yeah, I'm completely in the dark :P
