How fun. To restate and clairfy some things.
1) The first time lead was proven to be transmuted into gold was at Cal Berkeley. It was done as a joke and as a bragging point by Glenn Theodore Seaborg and Edwin Mattison McMillan. It was a bragging point for Seaborg since he is a member of Alpha Chis Sigma which is a fraternity based in Alchemy and Chemistry. They jointly won a Nobel Prize for their work in 1951 on transuranium elements (the lead to gold bit was fun aside) .
2) Alchemy is science. It is actually the mother of all of our sciences. True, it's begining it was part mysticisim and part science. However, from this begining grew all of the sciences that we hold true today.
3) And a fun bit of trivia of the roots of the word Alchemy... from an essay by Harry A. Curtis titled Alchemy (1943) "The Arabs, however, gave the name "alchemy" to the art of preparing gold, and the word alchemy - al chemi - is thought to mean the art of Egypt, the word "chemi" being on of the early nams for Egypt..."
