Grandmaster has a point: It's a lot more likely, given the age of the universe, that intelligent aliens would have traveled to earth far in the past, if at all, but it's more likely that they arrived, saw primordeal soup, ate a half-sandwitch and tossed the rest into a rockpool, and left.

Of course, we're still talking FTL, less than one percent of one percent of one percent of one percent of probability,

Then again, what about that 'flying shark' that ezekiel saw? I think it was Ezekiel.

The problem with alien-gods is that most peopl ewho propose this theory use them to explain easter island, stonehenge, and the pyramids, instead of believing that primative humans could be good at engineering.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this the exact same way the Calvinists see it?

I think that calvanism is more like 'you were born going to heaven or hell, and nothing you do can chage it.' What I'm talking about is 'if something you choose to do is going to send you to hell, isn't that enough without someone else hastening your trip?'

Religion: Does it really matter? Posted January 16th, 2004 in Politics

(Also posted on http://www.giveupalready.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=44603 by me.)

Truly. Does it matter if someone is atheist or agnostic or hindu, or muslim, or jewish, or christian, or prodistant, or catholic, and bhuddist, or jainist, or satanist, or wiccan, or druidic, or calvanist?

The way you live your life is up to you. If there is to be heavenly judgement, shouldn't we leave that up to Heaven? If there is karmic judgement, shouldn't we leave it up to karma? The rules people abide by in temporal society should be based on what we know, not what we believe.

For exapmle, anti-gay legislation. Even if gay people do go to hell, which I sencerely doubt, is it your right to hasten their journey? Is it your right to deny them rights based solely on your fear of the unknown guided by a highly controversial text?

If god did create the universe, he seems to have put it under the dictates of science, at least until he steps in more directly. Science, then, is the word of god, even if it is only temporary. If god wanted us to ignore what science tells us, would he have set up such elaborate 'ruses' as paelentological evidence, background microwave echoes of the big bang, and so on?

We need to stop making laws based on emotion and more based on common sense, otherwise why were we given it?

Never scared... hmmm

Let's see, I've been inside an aboandoned mental hospital, on the run from cops, crotchdeep in liquid dirt and rust, moving toward the building where those who still dwell there reside. The crazies. The kind of crazy where iof they catch you they will probably kill you and then try to ask your name. And by 'kill' I mean tie you up and skin you.

And you know what I've learned? Fear is healthy. It's your body's way of saying: You should not be here. If you stay here, you will die. Fear makes you alert. Fear makes you cautious. Fear is good. People who are not afraid tend to die young. I look forward to seeing your obituary.

Fucking dumbass.

Random thought: Dosn't this validate the comparison many people make between Ann Coulter and Michael Moore? You know, the one that says they're both misleading, alter the facts to support their claims, sometimes make things up...

<opinion>
Except that Ann Coulter is an evil conservative bitch and Michael Moore is a misleading liberal comedian. And that Moore is right, even if he does use trickery to make his point.</opinion>

Please not I'm not excusing him, merely pointing out that you have your own rabid propagandist.

Response to: Extraterrestrial Life? Posted January 15th, 2004 in Politics

SETI isn't the answer. What is the likelihood that another race, with the drive to explore space, the technology to do it practicly, and the desire for resources or land that would most likely drive a species like ours to the stars, will be benevolent?

If we find no answer, there will always be more sky to search.
If we find a signal of a pre-space-flight culture, it will frustrate us to no end and create mass paranoia.
If we attract the attention of a ship:
a) and if they are hostile, we're screwed.
b) and they're not hostile, many people will still be paranoid, and how likely is it they will care enough to help us?

And besides, i think we should complete STI before beginning SETI

You're all cretens, with the exception of those who mentioned:

Babylon 5: best sci-fi show ever, for hte following reasons: acting, scientific comprehensibility, political commentary, no internal inconsistancies, and teh fact that it just plain pwns joo.

Red Dwarf: Funny as hell

MST3K: Ditto

Star Trek: Has gone downhill lately, but I feel some loyalty to it as it is what got me into the genre in the first place.

B-Star G: The precursor to Star Trek in many ways. Loyalty, although it is far from B5 standards.

V: Just plain awesome.

Every sperm is fine

I believe they isolate the antimater in a total vacuum chamber and suspend it magneticly, but I am not sure. It sounds right, though.
thats pretty much right... they find these atoms by smashing them together at light speeds in a partical acellerator and they take photos of them at the moment of impact and all the little bits of atoms go flying everywhere. then some luckey scientist gets the job of naming all the bits and gave them gimpish names like

(Quarks) Little itty bits of atom there are about 200 of these that we know of with stupid names like Alpha and Zeta

(Antimatter) see above... basicley evil matter

(Tachyons) Stupid atoms that don't like the laws of phyisics so they ignore them and fly faster than the speed of light ...basterds...

(Neutrenos) Yeah these things don't understand the word "STOP" they sorta fly though anything they feel like.

(Photons) These are light in a can they bounce around alot.

There is alot more junk but its not as nice as this stuff.
and I can't be sure this is how they do it I kinda dossed the science test so they don't let me do it in collage.

You forgot about: positrons, which are electrons that travel back in time so that they gater a positive spin.

Fermions, which, due to some odd hyperdimensional geometry, only return to the same orientation if you fully rotate them twice, and which make up all matter that we know of.

Gluons, which hold quarks together.

Bosons, which make up all energy as we know it.
