Ok, so I am a musician with a love for the musical genre metal. However, not everyone likes metal, and I believe there is no "good music," only good musicians. Why do I believe this? Well here's why:

After a very long time of thinking what makes music good, I have come to the conclusion that there is no one objective way of defining good music. Music is by nature subjective and therefore it is impossible to state that any one song or even branch of music is good.

After stating that, I also take into account that people like different kinds of music, and they are only as good as their following (i.e. fans, money generated, times played, etc.). So I came to the conclusion that if you can play different genres of music and play them well, you are a good musician.

Now I myself am particularly bias toward metal, but I wish to expand my horizons. I was wondering what genres other people out there recommend and perhaps their own experience with this type of thing.

Also if it matters, I play the guitar and am hoping to learn the piano soon as I can afford one.

That aside, I agree with you for a lot of what you said, but it applies most in the orchestra world. In the Philharmonic, any chair that opens up gets players from all over the world at top skill trying to apply just for that spot.
