I watched the first one when it first came out.
I enjoyed the Animation, but the overly cutesy love story wasn't for me.

You seem to have an opinion that only takes into account the average stereotypical japanese writer. So yes, most Japanese shows (including Death Note) have bad dialogue, a lack of humour and are unnecessarily overemotional or overdramatic. But Death Note is actually has a fairly well thought out storyline, and people like it. So if you don't like it don't watch it, but why bother us about it just because you don't think that the Japanese can right a show?

This. Death Note was great until L died, then it was mediocre at best. Though it bewilders me how someone can like Naruto and Bleach and not like Death Note.
