It better be good!

Hey,
Im really trying to learn Actionscript but Im too young to go to college/university but I am willing to spend some money on videos or docs or whatever since at the moment im just teaching myself.

So does anyone know some good pay tutorials? I had a look at the Adobe training things but they are a bit pricey for stuff that isn't all flash....

thanks in advance if you can share some info

well I have a flash decompiler thing so do you think that get fussed if I used it to get the intro?
I mean why does NG give a crap whos using it in there flashes, it's more exposure = more users = more $$$

Response to: American and Australian Elections? Posted July 7th, 2008 in Politics

okay well that just about answers my question!

Hi,
You know the one where it shows the NG logo then it flys out and it shows EVERYTHING by EVERYONE in cool fx?

I have seen this on a few movies/games now and I was just wondering how I can put it on my game to show off some NG love, is it a NG Ad API exclusive thing or what?

thanks in advance.

American and Australian Elections? Posted July 7th, 2008 in Politics

Just out of curiosity I want to ask one of you americans on this forum and ask you if you saw ANY of the Australian elections or anything about them in the media? Do you know who the current prime minister is?

Im just asking because I think the Aussie media had a love affair with America for some weeks or something because for those weeks you could garenty that if you switched on the news at any time of the day you would see at least one thing about the American elections

Maybe it was just because it was so controversial with the whole female or black thing?
what do you think?

Response to: What is the ideal governmenment Posted July 7th, 2008 in Politics

communism - Only works if everybody is 100% the same in every way not 99.9, 100% for as soon as someone realises that bob over there who is sweeping the footpath gets the same pay and opportunities as jane over there who is inventing life saving treatments then there is going to be a fuss

no government - which idiot came up with that? no government = no roads, no health system, no education system and all services would be privatized which would make people even less inclined to build roads, schools etc anyway!

democracy - It's not perfect but it's all we have got.

democracy of the smarts - Someone said a democracy where only people that went to college etc could vote, that could work maybe, will have to think about it

just my thoughts.

Response to: do video games make kids killers?? Posted July 7th, 2008 in Politics

When it comes down to reality I think it really depends on the age of the player (hence the age restrictions)
In Australia GTA 4 has been cut down and it is still MA 18+ and when I go over to my friends house and see his 5 year old brother playing GTA all day....

I think for kids who are 9 and below GTA (gore,killing,etc) is really not good for them because in they're eyes they then see that behavior as (socially?) acceptable.

If your on a mac these steps will be a bit simpler (and compatible :P):
Use your iSight (the little camera in all mac machines made after 06) and Photobooth.app (in your Applications folder) Then, in Photobooth press the big red camera icon to take pictures, take as many as you need for your movie,
drag all the photos from the bottom of the Photobooth window into a folder somewhere;

next open up Quicktime Player.app (also in apps folder) and navigate to File > Open Image Sequence you should get a prompt asking where your images are, navigate to the folder with all the images in it, press okay, choose a framerate
Your movie will now be compiled, test it out and change the fps if necessary and then goto File > Save As... choose somewhere to export too (the default export settings should do fine)
and then your done!

Optionally you can next import to the flash authoring tool and upload to NG.

hope that helps someone :P

Response to: Do you credit for tracing? Posted July 6th, 2008 in Game Development

if you trace something like a gun and totally change it (like size colour scheme etc) then yes, it is considered your own work in almost all cases but if you are using sprites etc like how everyone does:
Say you are making a sonic rpg replica thing it is actually ILLEGAL!
even if you say "Copyright NINTENDO" in most cases it is still ILLEGAL!
but I dont think you need to worry since Nintendo is raking in enough $$$ as it is

hope that helps

there is nothing on the market that is free and actually lives up to the official Flash authoring tool, get the 30 day trial and have some deep thoughts about whether you want to buy it or not...

Anyhoo, I dont think anyone on NG would have connections and what kind of things would you ask them anyhoo?

Response to: Actionscript help Posted July 6th, 2008 in Game Development

well if you dont want to go into the complex way of hitTest then just make several MCs inside your main MC, make them the same shapes the primitives in your main MC, basically for a really good hittest place many squares inside your MC as close to the actual edges as possible, hard to explain

in the example below your trying to hitTest the big black blob and want it as accurate as possible by hitTesting all the mini MCs (in green) inside it
this could use huge cpu to run but im not sure....

Flash comes with a 30 day full free trial, after that you need to pay for it
and flash is not cheap!

Im not kidding! NG is getting left behind in game APIs - we can't just sit here and say
yeah well, we have a good portal and stff....
We need to step up and take these new ideas and put them into action!
A highscore API wouldn't really be that hard to make, the serverside would have to be done by Fulp & co but the flash side would be easy!

lv = new LoadVars();
	lv.load("http://www.newgrounds.com/achievement.php?des=Finished the game!");
	lv.onLoad = function(success) {
		if (success) {
			aPoints = this.aPoints;
			trace("You now have a total of "+aPoints);
		} else {
			trace("achievement failed to save");
		}
	};

there are many other ways to do it (and probably better) but thats just an example of how easy it could be!

Response to: AS3 and hardware ? Posted July 5th, 2008 in Game Development

Hmmm...
I know it is possible because my ISP uses a flash app for the installation and it was connecting to my USB modem

Or maybe you could make something with C or visual or something and then have a webview (like a web page view/panel, thats what theyr called on mac not sure on windows) that has your swf in it,
then in your swf have an undefined variable that will be used for the port information, then get your C/visual app to parse in the information like "file://user/path/to/app/resources/inter face.swf?portData=..."

well thats all I can think of,
hope that helps.

Response to: Video in Flash 8 Pro Posted July 5th, 2008 in Game Development

um....
all i can think of is:
1. Did you delete the movie file? Try re-importing it
2. The skin for the video play could be damaged, try another skin from the wizard
3. reinstall flash :(

Theres a reason why Denvish made an e-penis calculator.
Also there is the user levels which def seperate noobs from regs.
Honestly, your idea is terrible since the staff at newgrounds have alreadly developed all sorts of stats/badges..etc to show the difference between the users who are regs and the users who are noobs.

maybe so, but there is a difference between just rating and reviewing the to actually playing the game and trying to get the best and unlock the best.

Also, it's not just about being better than the person next to you it's about having fun and being rewarded when you do something totally awesome in a game!

i like the idea, it just has some holes

Okay, while the game is in the "Under Judgment" stage none of the achievement points are allowed to be kept by the player/reviewer until it passes judgment and there can just be another whistle option for achievement hogging/hoaxing

and finally to prevent devs from putting in hidden achievements that only they can get you simply make it so the author can't get achievement points from their own game but instead get a set amount based on the score their game gets.

This is a great idea and it really shouldn't be looked over as just something thats too hard because it is not and it will change the way we play newgrounds games forever!

Newgrounds Achievement Api Posted July 5th, 2008 in Game Development

Hey,
I have just been doing some deep and meaningful thinking about the games and the competitiveness on NG and thought to myself...
what could separate the n00bs from the pwners? What could split the addicts from the regulars?
and the answer, ACHIEVEMENTS!!
Just think, wouldn't it be great to have a "NG ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED: finished!" after finally completing your fav flash game? Wouldn't it be even greater to go brag your shiny new metal on your profile?
and wouldn't it be just be fantastic if you, yes you game devs could put in these achievements and make your loving fans go C R A Z Y!

So, my proposal: newgrounds achievements - where do I want it: in NG games - when do I want it: ASAP!

This would give avid NG fans even more to play for and add a huge reply factor to your games, so you know what to do... START BUGGIN' MR FULP & co

anyhoo,
BACK TO THE DEN!
