I haven't tried it, but Pro Tools is the world's renowned DAW for working with recorded instruments, I believe. Many professional pop producers use Pro Tools.

It's a bit overrated due to that fact that it's the only DAW that has a dedicated and accredited professional formation, called the Pro Tools Formation. It's actually a prerequisite in most industries nowadays to have this accreditation, and you'll rarely see a professional sound recording studio without one.

I'd call that a bit more than "many", though, once again, it doesn't mean that the DAW is the best, simply that it's the only one which comes with a certified paper stating you're good enough to use it.

Personally I think you don't need to be like a big wussy who majors in music composition to know how to compose good music. People like this guy is pretty much those who loves to bang their head against the wall, just to make music that they think it is good. The guy could be an autistic dude who like everything in order. That's quite common.

What's the big deal of learning advanced music theory? I see no use of it, unless you are planning to become professors who teach in music history!

The big deal of music theory is to bypass the whole "learning by yourself" process. Thing is, everything that you know has already been discovered by someone else, so there's really no point in "discovering" it again.

Think of it as learning language, since it literally is. You can listen to other people articulate words and eventually learn how to articulate simple ideas like "I like you." But the whole process could take anywhere between a month and a year, while being taught these kinds of things can condense that to a day.

Then, if you further your study, you'll learn to express more complex ideas like "The silk of your hair, the plumpness of your cheeks and the freckles upon them, like a aggregate of sunflowers blowing through a field of raspberries ; all of this, plus the frailty of my own poor soul, beg to express my own attachment to your very being". and at song point, once you get to the point where you are confident enough in your understanding of musical theory, you can go ahead and experiment.

Disregarding musical theory would be to disregard every musical advancement since the Baroque era. If people weren't pushing the boundaries of theoretical knowledge, we'd still be making madrigals.

Update.

I'm making steady progress with both my tracks, I'm getting real ambitious with my France track, with two recorded instruments and solos, possibly three.

Also, I've gotten my hands on a gig to make japanese style music, so I would very much like to add a THIRD country to my list: Okinawa. In case you people didn't know, it's an independent island between China and Japan, and it's where originated Karate.

In any case, he's right. It's completely retarded to compare one with the other, as each of them are constructed in function of one particular aspect, and therefore excel at their respective specialization, and possibly suck at the others.

It's like comparing a 100 meters racer with a 3000 meters racer, even though they're the same discipline, the competitors on each sport are specialized in different aspects of the run, and therefore couldn't be expected to rivalise with the other sport.

Then you could sample them over your analog/square leads and whatever else you want to do. I'm not sure because there are a lot of video game systems with many different sound chips, and all of their sounds can be considered "chiptune." You didn't exactly specify what it was you were looking for, so I hope what I said helps. But if you want an easy 8bit PSG drum kit, port your midi files to GXSCC and turn off all channels except the one labeled "DRUM," then author it into a WAV file. Then beat-match that WAV file to the rest of the sounds in your chiptune track. It's kinda shitty, bit it's 8bit-sounding enough for most people to be fooled. I hope that helps ;)

Playing a random array of sounds won't get you far, as you would rather need to ask someone to create a large bank of short musical cues that all fit together, and then make them start at precise points in time to avoid bad synchronization.

In any case, it's happened quite a few times in the past, but it's really hard to do, you need to have a very competent programmer to insert crossfades between tracks to have seamless transitions and cue all these samples together.

In any case, good luck with that.

[Late Night Strolls]

Yep, fancy brackets, deal with it. Also it's 5:30 AM and I haven't slept, so expect excessive rambling, and possible nonsense.

In any case, I've had insomnia for the past week due to health and IRL issues, and it's seriously had a toll on my temper and general productivity. I've tried all sorts of fancy stuff, including listening to sleep music -which as a music analyst is utterly pointless, considering I just concentrate on the music- relaxing tea, medication, nothing works.

So anyways, today, after rolling in bed for countless hours like every night, and having less than three hours before having to get up, I decided to try something new and take a late night stroll (hence the fancy title). I know there's probably a lot of people here who've done this in the past, but this was my first time doing something of the sort, and it's definitely something I'll be doing much more from now on.

First of all, being in a big city it's rare I ever get some peace and quiet, so already it's a nice change of pace. I didn't have any set route in mind, I just put one foot in front of the other and tried to stop thinking for once. This was fairly successful, and for a few moments I was away from all that nonsense. And then I heard something out of place. There's this mosque close to my home that I usually just walk by, I was under the impression that the place was foreclosed because of how old it looks. But it would seem I was wrong, as I was hearing some ritual singing from inside. There didn't seem to be anyone guarding the door, and I was fairly curious, so I decided to take a look inside.

It was fairly modest, your run-of-the-mill waiting room and a small staircase leading up to the actual Mosque. So I go up and find the door, and after taking my courage by two hands, open the door.

The place is as modest as I thought it would, with very little decoration and not much more than a podium for the one leading the ceremony. Fortunately there's a chair beside the door, and so after a few people and the leader have a quick look at me, they leave me be, and I sit.

In case people didn't know, I'm a huge fan of world and religious music, especially middle-eastern ceremonial music, so it was quite the treat to experience the real thing in person. I fortunately arrived just a few moments after the ceremony had started, so I had the occasion to witness most of it. The leader had an amazing voice and really had the intonations I had heard so many times before.

In any case, I eventually left to start getting my stuff ready, but I come out of this experience completely re-freshened and with a brand new set of inspiration for my music, so I believe that this was quite a fruitful experiment!

TL;DR: Random encounters are the best types of encounters, except maybe those of the third kind. Also, I write novels when I have sleep deprivation.

I don't have a problem with cpu usage while I'm writing/recording... but I'm gonna have to try this for while I'm gaming... cause my CPU is behind the times and holds my graphics card back.

It's actually an incredibly powerful tool, last game I bought on steam sale was LA Noire, my computer could barely run at minimum specs, and even then it was unplayable (7-10 fps), but with that programm I get 60 fps full specs.

At 8/18/12 02:42 PM, AndretheXLR8R wrote: My fellow composers, I have a question and couldn't seem to find this posted in the forum.

What kind of contracts you typically see with game scoring based on your experiences?

Here's some examples Im thinking of:

1) Charge a flat fee per song
2) Charge an overall fee
3) Have 100% rights to your music, this means selling it on your own via bandcamp or where ever without giving anything to the game company.
4) Ask for a percentage of profits or units sold (since your music is part of every game being sold)

I'd appreciate any feedback, Thanks!

There is no standards, you see 1, 2 and 4 all the time, and 3 would probably happen more on AudioJungle. It's really a case-by-case sort of thing, but I think that people most often ask for a bundled price. Again, it really depends on what type of project you're working with.

As the title states, this is an appeal to the audio forum, community and moderators to add the electronic sub-genre Progressive.

There have been plenty of times when I have sat down with my music and overlooked what I could put out on Newgrounds that would not conflict with the different genres. I often stumble on the issue of my music being throughout progressive. This causes some of the music I produce to never see the light outside my glorious basement*.

I would love to post more music to Newgrounds but I feel limited to the current sets of genres when I'm producing wich leads to this dilemma where I really don't feel like I can actually produce what I want.

That's my argument for this genre, feel free to question me if I've made anything unclear.

23i

*Reference only, not actually basement.

There is a serious lack in genres in the portal, not just in the electro department, but since the redesign, you can add the specific genre your music is apparent to in the tags. That's how I deal with it, anyhow.

Response to: Books on audio Posted August 18th, 2012 in Audio

Alright, this seems like a great idea, so let me bring my two cent here:

Samuel Adler's Study of Orchestration

Hands down the most comprehensive book to study anything and everything regarding the classical orchestra. It is divided into two parts: the first part will give you a thorough explanation of every instrument, how to play them, how to write for them in different contexts, examples of repertoire, etc. The second part will tell you every little detail, every technique used by the greats to attain certain effects, as well as more concrete examples through existing repertoire. It also comes with a four-CD package with all the examples used in the book, though I wouldn't recommend buying it, for because of the inflation of copyrights for these tracks, it is now twice as expensive as the book itself.

Principles of Orchestration, by Rimsky Korsakov

I'll be totally honest, I don't know much about this book, but I've heard a lot of great stuff. I've been told that it's quite similar to Adler's documentation, but with the opinion of a well-established orchestral genius.

Arnold Shoenberg's Study of Harmony

This book contains very intricate knowledge on classical harmony, the kind of stuff that is rarely taught, even at Uni. Be wary, though, Shoenberg didn't make this to be comprehensive, as this is merely a grouping of his own findings, so to be avoided for the beginners/intermediates.

Mark Levin's Jazz Theory Book

Moving on to Jazz, this is hands down the best collection of theoretical knowledge to have come to be, be it for any level. This guy has a way of teaching you stuff so comprehensively you'll barely ever have to double-read a segment. The book will start from the very basis the theory behind Jazz harmony, and will progressively move to the really advanced stuff like chord substitution and the famed Coltrane Changes.

In any case, that's all I got for now, hope this'll be useful to anybody!
