I've personally dropped off from from college for a full year now, and although I have acquired a fare amount of knowledge on my own, the lack of infrastructure and professional insight has really pulled me back in the past few months and have brought me to give school another go, especially considering the exceptionally good program I am now enrolling in and that I had somehow missed on my first try.

Basically, you should see school as a way to seek advice from very reputable people in the industry instead of an endurance run to acquire an often useless degree (when it comes to music, at least), as well as the perfect occasion to build up your contact list, for these people will most likely be the people you'll be working with for the next few decades, unless you move far away from your school.

That's what I got from it, at the very least, we'll see how it goes when I give it another go starting this January.

Straight from the rules:
- No covers. All melodies contained in your submission must be composed ENTIRELY by yourself.
- Songs must be NEWLY COMPOSED and created for this competition.

Response to: The Instrument Request Thread Posted November 29th, 2012 in Audio

Hey there, peeps!

I'm a capable trumpeter, and play almost any world percussion fluently, ranging from the conga to the darbouka, the caxixi to pot drums. I've also got fellow college-level musicians available to record a large span of instruments, be it flute, sax, trombone, clarinet, guitar (dry or jazz), bass (upright or electric), violin, drum, etc.

Examples of works that have included my recordings:

  • Fly me to Blue

Well it was 66% off, making for around 1000$, but now, with an added instrument, it comes down to around 900$.

Not that big of a difference, but still, a rebate on the sweetest deal ever is still pretty awesome.

Response to: 50% Off East/west Products Posted November 28th, 2012 in Audio

Just letting people know, they just pulled out a new deal for the CCC called the CCC HD, now 75% off AND a free supplementary instrument.

Things just keep getting better and better...

Alright, alright, I'll join, get off my back!

I'm into anything jazz related, with an affection for prog-jazz and ethno-jazz. Or anything ethnic, especially East European, Middle Eastern and South American.

I'm open to most genres, but Electronica is completely out of my comfort zone, so unless it's Nu-Jazz, please avoid.

For those of you who always wanted the high-end East/West products but thought they were too expensive, now is the time to consider buying one! For example, the best East/West VST for an orchestral artist with a low budget, Symphonic Orchestra Silver, is just 77 Euro.

I HIGHLY recommend buying at least 6 East/West VSTs at this point in time.

Unfortunately excludes their new Hollywood Woodwind samples. :(

That is still overly awesome, and I will most certainly be taking advantage of this deal!

I'll unfortunately need to back down from this competition, as I've done my best to come up with something, but my inspiration is currently as dry as Death Valley.

I've written less than 30 seconds' worth of material, and seeing as there's only an hour left, I think it's safe to say I'm short on time.

TOO SHORT

I wish I could just provide all the material I worked on for this, but I split like six minutes worth of music up into separate songs and now the main one isn't long enough :/

Oh well, I'll upload it as is and see what happens. The deadline is in an hour and a half so I won't be able to add enough in that time.

Brah, still got a full day left, as stated by Lord Bosa himself:

THE DEADLINE IS NOW NOVEMBER 7TH @ 23:59.99

In any case, progress is VERY slow for my part, but I'll try to pull out something at least half-decent!

You are the man.

If they can't figure out how to put together a song in 6 hours (those are a lot!), either they need to get another job or shoot themselves in the heads.

Once again, I think we should focus more on the OP's case, not on industry standards... scoring small (note- SMALL, as in the OP's case) iOS and flash games is NOT the industry standard as far as I know. :P
^ It ain't even industrial standard. It's poser and mainstream standard. I am questionable on amount of people, especially who posted on here can produce that 'A-list' industrial quality of music.

Funny how those can reach that standard who were on NG, all left. Danman87, Edgen... :(

1 minuted of quality custom-made music would take a professional how long, you'd think? 5 hours? More or less? And then there's tweaking it to suit the customer's requests for change, should there be any. So, would this be around a 6 hour project for a qualified professional? Maybe more, maybe less.

If my numbers are accurate, which I am not saying they are, but $100 for 1 minute of quality audio, for 6 hours of work; the producer is getting less than $17 per hour! That's a terrible wage for a fully qualified producer.
Have you ever gone to work, I mean in real life? People getting $17/hr because they work constantly for over 8 hours (yep 8 is the limit for $15 and up, over here). If a musician gets $17 per hour for shit he/she does less than other, how fair! That's more than a military regular 's salary.

As BrokenDeck said, it doesn't matter on the education whatever shit certificate you have, in the end it is what you can achieve and give to your client which matters.

If you can't fucking produce good shit and still fucking wanted to get $100, are you much different from a scammer?

And for your part, have you ever worked as a musician in your life?

If you've ever done so, you'd realize that the main difference between an artist's job and a regular 9-5 type job is consistency in workload. This means that if a musician is paid 1200$ to play for 10 minutes, but doesn't get any gig for a month afterwards, the regular 9-5er will have made MUCH more money in the end.

That's how it works in any contractory job, you'll see much higher salaries, but there isn't any job security. Therefore, it's a tad silly to talk about hourly wage in this context, though it helps to show that working on a one-shot project that will most likely be the only one in the month for roughly the same wage as someone with job security isn't really ideal.

Also, for the record, just because it takes you an hour to pump out a song, it most certainly doesn't mean it's the same for others, especially since the level of detail demanded for high-level gigs is not something to be taken likely. Plus, in the end, the quantity of time taken to produce audio material is in no way relevant to one's talent.

Just my two cents.

Let's face it, if someone asks over $100 per minute on your music, the quality of product will be far greater than is needed for your product (it's like if you asked Picasso to do art for your game).
Look, I'm not a musician professionally, and this part of the music industry is not what I seek, however, let's look at this from a different perspective here:

Just some food for thought.

Indeed, and I'm currently studying composition and music business, and the average wage for a regular pro is 150$/minute, whilst a renown pro can go from 250 to 400.

I'm going for something between 60-75 depending on the gig, but one of my friends, who's worked with Ubisoft and such in the past, charges 150, so 100 isn't THAT huge.

And you're not willing do dish out even 50$ for some decent sounds of your own?

Now isn't this lovely.

What you may not be aware about is that music composition for any game isn't just about having a complete
piece of music. It needs to be layered and to move in a non-linear fashion that it would in a movie or tv program,
so that it reflects the players choices or informs the [layer of in game decisions or content or threats or rewards.

Composing for games is completely different and, if you're not careful, it will hurt all your hard work. (which looks great btw!)

Take a look at my work, give me an e-mail if you want. (www.russjohnsonhq.com) My scores have been mixed at 20th Century Fox and Twickenham Studios. Don't hand over your hard work to someone just because they are a 'composer' and they 'have a piece of music'.

Thanks for completely shitting on everyone else on this forum by basically stating that we're all amateurs here, as well as disregarding the fact this thread is now over two months old and been dead for over a month now.
