Painful part of the WC: the amount of players that Porto launched and are no longer here, shining bright as all phuq. Even so, we're 3rd, with 9 players in the WC.
We do miss James.

That kind of shows that he and "his people" (agent, family leeches, etc) have their bottom lines under the microscope and are focusing greatly on his market value. Nevermind the actual implications of the event, like the well-being of a fellow athlete, the possibility of undiagnosed severe mental issues, the poor example set, and just the overall shame, let's all focus instead on the difficulty that they'll have in finding someone willing to purchase him out of Liverpool for a big fat wad of cash. Damn you British media for shining the spotlight on the event, bringing it to the attention to possible client clubs, who otherwise would obviously never have known about the incident.

Fucking idiots.

How lame duck the US was, they knew all they had to do was defend to advance so they'd give up every potential offensive position over and over. We almost NEVER had the ball on their side of the field. If we did get it, we'd get it to midfield, kick it to their back field and they'd recover and continue their never ending blitzkrieg of attacks that we just let happen because we always needed 3 or 4 of our guys way in our backside of the field. Maybe if we put some offensive effort in and put pressure on THEM to defend, they wouldn't have scored. Of course if you give an opponent enough chances, they'll always get it in, eventually. How they thought we'd be able to keep them at bay for 90 minutes is beyond me, I honestly think the fact they didn't score more was just Germany's good graces. (not that they weren't trying)

The thing with playing against "big sharks" (an expression used to describe a team that's considered a group-killer, 'cause we're stuck in a tiny tank with them) is that that's pretty much your only option, to be compact in defence and, whenever you get a chance, come out with guns blazing. To make a parallel, it's one of those occasions when the NBA maxim "the best defense is a good offense" works - a rarity in a sport where player rotation is almost negligible, and playing offensive or counter-offensive football for extended periods of time will rapidly result in enormous fatigue and breakdowns in concentration. Thing is, it was match day 3, and in Brazil. Like i said about the Dutch team before Spain even started, i can see only one team maintaining speed of play over all 90 minutes of a match in these weather conditions, and it's the Dutch. Everyone else who's playing counter-offensive football is going to be hurting after about minute 50~60. Portugal started off against Germany and made 7 out of the available 9 substitutions during the group stage as "conditioned substitutions" (either injury, fatigue management or formation rebalancing after a red card).

Anyways, so far I'm interested enough to want to buy a soccer ball and knock it around with my bro and get into the matches more, we watch them all the time at work. (in our downtime, of course)
Yay?

I always kinda hope that the ending of the World Cups attracts a few stragglers toward watching a few MLS or EPL matches afterward and get into it.

Yeah, it's rather complicated, heh.

But one should never forget to take it all in good fun. It's an easy joke to make, and although Germans won't outright laugh-out-loud at anything related to it, i think even the famous German (lack of) sense of humour isn't stubborn enough to not understand that, if there's one thing you can count on in football, it's a high volume of stupid jokes for cheap chuckles. Example: giving Americans shit for their attempts at grasping the sport.
On the srs on that issue, World Cup Newgrounds makes me proud of the amount of Americans that actually make an effort, if only 1 month out of 4 years, to get into the beautiful game and understand its finer points. This year, the big focus so far for them was "how, exactly, does injury time work? and is it like overtime?"

I've seen a video of this incident. And I did cry. :(

I was watching it on live TV, since at that time Benfica was on the way to win their first league title in 10 years, and as a Porto fan, any lost points by them would be cause for celebration, and an opportunity for Porto to ruin their party. Ended up watching TV at the edge of my seat for the rest of the day\night hoping for good news on him. Porto basically chased him out of their offices after a heated argument between himself, his agent and our President a few years before that, involving an overturned table and broken computer, resulting in his turncoating to Benfica, so Porto fans' feelings about him weren't exactly the best, right up until the moment we saw both Benfica and Guimarães' medical teams sprinting onto the pitch. The following day, Porto sent a representative entourage, headed by none other than Mourinho himself, to pay respects.

Keeping him, Vivien Foe, and a bunch of other people in mind, Qatar 2022 is going to be a gigantic clusterfuck and everybody knows it.

Thanks. I really expected Portugal to advance to the next round (that's why I thought Ronaldo will win the golden boot), but USA really surprised me.

If the Group H matches go the way they're supposed to, the Americans play Belgium and Germany play either Algeria or Russia. Even though I'm somewhat acquainted with Algeria's attack (a few of them play in Portugal), i still say let's hope it's Algeria, obviously. Belgium has been interesting to watch, seeing as they're not usual contenders in World Cups and when they do, you get to see an entirely different generation with wholly new football.

Time to start explaining to American friends on skype that, outside the US, playoffs are only one match apiece. Win or go home, do or die, etc.
It would be really funny if it was best of 5 or best of 7, haha.

They judge how much time that it took for things that would normally stop play, such as injuries, or kicking the ball intentionally out of bounds and a few others. (I think there are a few others, IDK) it was designed to speed up the end of games against teams who intentionally slow down play to protect single-goal leads.

Precisely. Dempsey took between 30 to 45 seconds to walk off the pitch while being substituted during injury time, hence the 4 minutes given turning into 5. Basically, any sort of anti-football time-burning adds to the clock, most of the time rounded up instead of down in order to penalize the team that tries to burn time.

That's ESPN's programming when they're not showing sports. Before Lebron won two straight NBA title they were all about Tim Tebow.

I get that. It's just an interesting exercise to switch between streams from different countries and note the differences. There's an easy joke in there about "lololo murkans don't have attention spans, ADD" and whatnot, but i guess it comes from a) a multi-big-sport culture and b) a culture of sports more segmented than football (i.e. 4 quarters, time-outs, commercial breaks, etc). Earlier today, ESPN was like "20 PEOPLE DIED IN NIGERIA DUE TO A BOMB ATTACK IN A SHOPPING MALL", mid-play. Here, they won't even tell you that someone died in the stands of the stadium until after the game is over, in order to break the news more gently than that. One thing Gagsy and i once found unthinkable was a radio show host slipping in "Subway, build a better breakfast" mid-sentence. Not mid-show, not mid-conversation, he actually interrupted himself, then picked back up where he'd left off the sentence and kept going like it was nothing. My jaw dropped.

Been listening out for this, and they mention other teams just as frequently that are not in the EPL. If you're watching an English stream catered for an English audience, then I don't really see the big deal in them saying "oh, he plays for Chelski" or whatever. Don't see the issue, tbh.

I'm talking about comparatively to portuguese streams mentioning portuguese clubs etc. The british streams even go so far as to mention a player that used-to-be in a british club for a few months six years ago.

We'll see how far Argentina can get with a good Messi in a not so good team. Who knows, maybe a "good Messi" is enough to win the title?

I know what you mean, would've expected a lot more from Higuaín, di María, etc. I'd still back Brazil in a head-to-head with Argentina.
