It'll be interesting to see how many complaints you get about the new format.
Personally, i prefer the multiple window format and since the windows can be
resized (at least with the browser i use) the fact that they are initialized small
is not an issue.
;These new full-page menus will integrate much better with some upcoming user features, such as the long-awaited private messaging system.
If you say so. I assume the PM system will have an opt out feature so that folks who
*don't* want to use it aren't bothered by pings from other users?

Nope. It's fixed now. Thanks.
The page folks can go to when they want to see which movies still need to have an icon made for them is broken--- instead of the name of the flash one sees a number and clicking the link on the number generates an error message:
" invalid id parameter. Go to Newgrounds!"

Things have slowed down a bit with user-submitted icons. There are thousands of submissions on NG that lack 50x50 icons, so James developed a tool that allows anyone to log in and submit icons for approval! The list is prioritized based on upcoming birthday showcases.
The entry currently at the top of the list is:
http://newgrounds.com/portal/view/9956
but it looks like the author has removed that flash.
Might want to make that flash a lower priority.

Why would they complain? The pool of potential winners is the folks who vote on

Tom did the NumaGrounds April Fools this year instead of making a joke related to the flash voting.
Yes, i know.
:What makes you think he'd ignore the opportunity to joke when the system was only 1 (or 2 months, depending on how you look at it) month old... if he was going to joke with it at all?

Where? I looked up and down the list 2-3 times for it.
It was surprising and disappointing to see that "Bones" was not on the list of
movies/games in the montly vote. How about letting voters include a write-in candidate
when they vote on the best flash to have been submitted during the past
month?

If you see any online articles that make that insinuation, would you be so kind as to
respond to it, pointing out that if certain journalists hadn't mentioned NG in the first
place the staff of NG wouldn't have felt the need to do something to take the strain off
their database? Reasoned, polite responses like that make that potential "spin" do
a 180 and land back on their own crusty mugs.
I notice that the link on the NG frontpage that went to the
ecard collection is no longer there. Does that mean that the
collection is no longer available? IF it is available, does NG still
consider submissions to the collection?

It looks nice, Tom. I'm not sure i would have noticed if you hadn't

One thing i have noticed for quite some time that you might
want to change:
"The console version ships on November 16th! Play the original here!"
At this point that kinda implies that AH console version isn't
coming out for another ten months.

One of the things i've noticed when filling out info on the webpage
for submitting flash to the portal is that bit about how it's OK to
parody someone else's work but it's not OK to rip their artwork.
Fine. So for the purposes of creating flash to be submitted to
newgrounds, what determines whether a graphic was "ripped"
or not?
I ask, because recently there was a flash featured on the front
page. I won't go into the merits of "Theoden Horsemaster", but,
ya know, i really DOUBT that the person who made that was
present on the set when "Return of the King" was being filmed,
snapping his own digital pix to use to make a parody of that film.
He animated the stills, but he didn't make 'em. So at what point
is the line drawn between ripped artwork and artwork based on
someone else's stuff?

I have that problem, too. It'd be helpful if the audio portal link for
listening to a file before downloading it worked for folks who use
browsers like Opera. Occasionally, if i'm desperate, i'll use IE to
browse the audio portal, but i really try to avoid using IE because
of the security problems and the fact that there have been a few
viruses lurking on the NG servers in the past.
Which browser do you use?

BTW, any chance something can be done about the person or
people who seem to do nothing but vote 0 in the audio portal?
I'm not expecting folks to give a 5 to a sound file they don't like,
but it doesn't seem reasonable to me to give a 0 to a file just
because the music isn't to their taste, either.

At 10/20/04 08:06 PM, liljim wrote: Perhaps you didn't read what I wrote, or you haven't been to the Newgrounds Mag since we re-introduced it and listened to the audio jukebox that you can launch. I'm fully aware of how to set up that kind of thing, but I don't think you understand just how many people would be unhappy about waiting long periods of time just for the page to load, just for some audio that they might not even want to be listening to in the first place
Based on what you wrote, my impression was that the problem
would be that it would take forever and a day to load the audio
portal index page because of the sheer size of all the files
involved in such a scheme. My suggestion attempted to
alleviate that problem by having the swf select single files.
It only pulls up more files if the viewer lingers on the index page.
However, if even selecting one file bogs down the loading of
the index page, then i can see how that could be a problem,
especially for the dial-up users. Given that the page in its current
state is presenting sounds, specifically those authored by
ParagonX9, i did not suppose that this was the difficulty.
As for the jukbox in the NG mag: you're right, i've not been able
to see/play it. Perhaps the problem is that i'm using Opera as
my browser, as a number of links in the mag don't work for me
when i try them.
At 10/20/04 11:35 AM, liljim wrote:
It's something I already thought of, there's just one problem with that; the sounds that are currently loaded into the player are in pre-compressed swf files (that work out at about 60Kb a pop). As soon as you start thinking about loading in raw mp3 and wav files, you can add up to another 3+ Mb to that and that's just a ridiculous amount of load time on the end user.
But does all of the sound have to be stuffed into the swf file?
Here's something i slapped together this afternoon (when i
wasn't busy coughing my lungs out):
http://burningriverstudios.com/audiodemo.html
It plays 19 second samples of audio files, the names of which
are stored in an array; none of the tunes are in the swf file
per se. The samples are played in a pseudo random order
(a few more lines of code would eliminate playing the same
sample more than once in a row), and the array that lists the
tunes to choose from could be revised in the wee hours of the
morning when all the other maintenance scripts are running on
the NG site.
And the small interval of silence between tune samples isn't
necessarily a bad thing.

Agreed. Since the (original) idea of the portal is to provide sound
files that flash artists can use, mebbe if it rotated through, say,
the top 10% of sound files (regardless of who made it), ranking
being determined by the number of times a sound file is used
in flash that can be found on newgrounds. Or something like
that.
Thanks for your work, Stamper.
