I do not know shit about this but maybe....
Does your monitors connect through both inputs?
Try connecting the monitors through one of them R-L cables? You plug in your left and subwoofer together or your right and subwoofer? Just looked that up but it sounds like complete bullshit to me. haha

But I find it hard to restate something that just happened in a song with a different instrument. Transitions between the instruments always feels really blocky and forced, and as a result I tend to hold on to the instruments being used and rather transition into a different motif or harmony because it sounds more natural for my writing style. However, this always makes for a song that goes a bit too much alll over the place in terms of emotion.
So I guess my goal is to figure out how to make more instrumentally dynamic pieces that dont feel like the song has ADHD. Thoughts?
Maybe look into variation techniques?
You said it sounds more natural for your writing style? Maybe if you use 8 instruments, try using 4? Although you want to vary your instrumentation, if you have a limit amount like 3 or 4 instruments, you will think about harmony and all the rest more to make it sound better.
In terms of emotion, not only think about dynamics but think about articulation as well!
A short 'chorale' I worked on a while back..

And speaking of questions, I have one about score-writing. I may see myself doing orchestral scores in the future. As for how the parts are arranged in the score, is there a specific arrangement or can the instrument families go any which way?
Do you basically mean is there specific roles when writing for the families of the Orchestra? xD

I guess I just need to read more, I'll definitely check out these recommendations, thanks!
Try getting a big bundle of 40 Bach chorales and study them or try to play them (easier if you play piano xD). If you have come across some and have not heard of any, try to play it (or hum it or imagine it)..
I would personally say that playing some (while thinking hard about what you are playing) gives you a chance to understand what you are playing and is very good for improv! I played a duet with my old piano teacher and we did blues improv but added a chorale style for the main part. It was so fun!
I'm a decent pianist, and I've taken all the college theory classes that are offered (music theory I-IV, but I'd still like to take a class on Shenkerian Analysis). Composing orchestral music is my definite weak point, so I'd love any help that I can get.
Have you ever printed out a couple of scores and looked at them? I used to read scores like books nearly every night to improve my sight reading and it really does help understand if you brainstorm the scores out in sections.
Refer to the fabulous Rimsky-Korsakov guide to Orchestration for stuff like that. He has some great section on harmony between sections for those interested in more advanced orchestration tricks... mind you his stuff is based on a more Romantic tradition...
Or the Piston. W Orchestration Guide. I found that very useful along side of this one as well!

Good idea for a thread!
Great question!
Do you mean efficient ways to make them sound stronger when playing together?
Bach Chorales become very (I MEAN VERY) useful in Orchestration..
Think of it as there are no rules to orchestrate... Of course not...
BUT, there are rules to make something sound stronger (not better) just stronger.
You can either look up Bach Chorales yourself or I can give you some ideas of what I mean?

You know, that is exactly how I got into Orchestration! I started looking on the web and found a very good website, I think its called mymusictheory.net (something like that) I research on that site so I could do my Grade 1-5 in Theory and Piano!
I was wondering if anyone wants to know anything about Orchestration? I seriously love talking to people about it and I have been into (the classical road) orchestration for about 5 years now and have taught it privately and in a secondry school. If anyone has any questions or concerns about orchestration then I or anyone else could answer them?
I seriously love theory and have got my ARBSM grade VII so far! even if it is a little question... :)
Just reviewed this fantastic piece which I really enjoyed (I never seem to enjoy DnB).

I pan them a little to the right, add reverb, add delay, I use Parametric EQ 2 to make it have less bass and to prevent it mixing with the hi hats, and lower/raise the volume. But after doing any or all of these things, I still don't like the way my crashes sound.
Spend a hour or two just on crashes. Try things you have not done. If you do something and like the sound, remember what you have done. My most favorite sound I ever came across was double tracking the audio and adding more bass with one but then add a dual filter. It made it sound... different? unique?
I used a pair of Rokit 5 the other month and I know what you mean, I think as people as said, it might be your soundcard... These were running through a mixer and they can achieve this bass sound you want. My friend played dubstep (I can not stand dubstep) but it shook the room with enough volume (not max).... IT was so fun in a way....
Also, I would say, if you are making music with these, they are bloody awesome because they are very good playback monitors. You do not want full on bass sounds anyway because it can cause the higher frequencies to not be noticed as much. I played one of my songs through a pair once and did not notice certain sounds that were in it.
Massive is easy to learn, loads of videos on YouTube showing you how to do it.

Try Mixcraft, it is very easy and simple to use. It comes with a lot of loops inside the library which you can download.
The demo is around 30 days but there are ways to make it last forever.
You can also record audio and midi if you ever want to do that.
OR! you can just go look for free samples (like Dub drum beats or Industrial bass lines and so on....) download them, drop them in Audacity.
Try to look for big packs which are free, you can download about 300 to around 900+ mb worth of samples (4 bar drum beats, or melodies that you can use to create your own music from samples).

Some of the suggestion I got from friends was LASS. The other said Hollywood Strings. However with my current budget they are out of my touch.
Also check out 8Dio productions.
I recently bought the Adagio Violins and I love it, if you are looking for specific string sections, 8Dio's libraries are pretty useful.

These are the ones that a lot of people compare to East West.. (But I have never compared them to East West)
LA Scoring Strings (Seriously, I have it..... It is not worth the money.)
Symphobia
Miraslov Philharmonik Orchestra (something like that??)
Edirol Orchestra (I think half of it is real and the other is computer generated?)
Cinematic Strings 2
GPO (Garritans Personal Orchestra - I have it and sounds a bit shit to be honest)
But yeah... (Try using more than 1 or 2 Libraries to enhance the sound of the strings and mixing the different positions on each library... Close mics for EW, far mics for another one and a mix of both on another library?)
Do not listen to people that say 'Oh this free library sounds exactly like an orchestra'... No they won't lol.
(I think you would know that anyway)
There are some more, but I can not think of them from the top of my head.
AND you can also try recording a real violin or different string instrument on top of the section you are doing to give it a more realistic feel? (You just need to know some string players and have a mic)
