Considering this run, in your average home studio, is like three feet tops, I am that much more dubious of your 'custom made' cables. At most, using a 'poor' cable, you'll witness some extra attenuation of the signal. But if the run is three feet... it's negligble.
yeah but its still noticeable.
I used to have my TRS studio monitors plugged directly into my laptop via a stereo 1/8 inch jack to trs splitter. what i noticed coming out of my speakers was a constant low level hiss, a white noise.
While you don't want to get absolutely crap wire, you atleast want to get decently shielded wire, when you are dealing with playback
I personally have for my setup have the middle of the road wire, 15 bucks for each 10 foot cable connecting my audio interface to my speakers
for your line ins, though, you want the best shielding possible in the microphone and cable. a 50 dollar cable here is absolutely nessecary, especially for guitar ins, and microphones.
I went for the cheap route with my microphone, grabbing a 99 buck seinheiser e385, and a cheap 15 dollar cable, same quality as my speaker cables, and when I pump up the compression on my voice I record in, that miniscule noise suddenly becomes a BIG issue. I assume noise inherent in the mic and/or the cable is the cause of this.
back to the cables connecting the speakers to the the output source, again, dont skimp becuase you will have a nasty hiss coming from your speakers at all time, atleast get decently shielded cables.
On an old setup with single strand, unshielded wiring, I used to get the country music radio station constantly playing out of my speakers at a low level :O
