Are you telling me the Conservative's budget update, which would make cuts to public funding of parties, wasn't a ploy to cripple the opposition? Did you not read who would be making the biggest sacrifices with that proposal? Either Harper was really dumb or really arrogant, but he's the one who caused this mess from the beginning. Canada gave him a mandate to lead as a minority, not be a complete dick towards the opposition. I know I didn't for an opposition member, so that they'd just stand idly by while the Conservatives got to pass any measure they pleased. We had them on a short minority leash and they have to respect that leash.

I am sorry BBB, this isn't going to bring Canada close together like you think, by letting the bloc have a bigger say. It is going to alienate the country more. This coalition holds 21 seats west of Ontario, most of which are in BC. How do you think they will take this? Infact, how do you think the other 9 provinces are going to feel with Quebec getting even more status and higher payouts? My guess is not too good.

Well before the Bloc Quebecois came on the scene, they always played kingmaker. If you couldn't win in Quebec and Ontario, then you better not even bother trying to win over the country. So now the east's Conservative MPs have united against the west's opposition MPs. Why? Well the west's MPs couldn't maintain the confidence of the house. I could chalk this up to the Conservative's lack of experience in leading a country, let alone a minority government, which is even tougher. The Liberals have had many minority governments and so have the Progressive Conservatives, but none of them ever pissed off the entire house the way these Conservatives have.

I know a coalition is risky. It's certainly uncharted territory for Canada, but it might be the only way of teaching the ruling party that it cannot run the House of Commons like a majority, when it has a minority mandate. Something has to be done to teach them that lesson because an election every two months would just be extremely costly, especially during an economic crisis. Hopefully this won't ever be repeated again, at least for the next 90 years or so because every single party that leads from this point on will learn the lesson that you cannot bully around the entire opposition, while in a minority government.

Are we going to vote every two months until the Conservatives get a majority? Is that how parliament should work?

I want to vote against the coalition, when do I get to do that?

When the House of Commons loses confidence in the coalition. That means if part of the coalition breaks off and the Conservatives join with them, then it will fall and we'll have another election.

I don't remember it being a democracy when parties can hijack the government by combining their popularity.

This happened back in 1926 when the Conservatives joined a coalition with the Progressives and brought down the Liberal Party. Conservatives planned to do this exact same thing with the NDP / Bloc back in 2004, but never went through with it.

What about people who like the Liberals but hate the separatists?

This might actually help mend some fences and bring Quebec closer to the rest of Canada. On the other side of the fence, what will separatists think of joining a coalition with a party that was once their bitter rival? If the result of this is more Quebec support for a united Canada, then Liberal voters might see this as a good thing.

Interesting news in Canada, to those who give a shit what's happening on your northern border or Canadians here who are actually experiencing it firsthand. Three parties are banding together, making up a majority of seats in the House of Commons and are about to take over the government and wrestle control from the Conservatives.

This should be a lesson to the Conservatives and to any leading party in the future. DO NOT fuck with the opposition, when you're a minority. You know it's bad when the separatists are joining a coalition with the Liberal Party (former bitter rivals) to bring down the Conservatives.

http://www.foxnews.com/wires/2008Dec01/0 ,4670,CanadaPoliticalCrisis,00.html

Maybe this will wipe the smug little smirk off every Conservative in Canada who told me that they had a de facto majority, giving them the ability to do practically whatever they want. I was so fucking sick of the Conservatives bullying around an opposition too afraid to have an election, but one thing they miscalculated on is that if they push it too far, there's one final option and that is a coalition to bring down the house. Yes the Conservatives still have a say, they do have 143 seats out of 308 (12 shy of a majority), but they just won't be able to have complete control over the debates anymore.

This is democracy in action. This is a government that is trully representative of the majority of Canadians. Not a party with just 37% support and only works to please its own base, while ignoring the other 63% of Canadian's representatives. Yes the Conservatives won the election with a mandate to lead, but that's just it they failed in that mandate and lost confidence of the house.

Yeah but Billy Talent is still more punk sounding and there's soooo much of that these days. The videos I put up were an example of a variety of hardcore music that doesn't sound punk at all, while each of them having their own unique sound and about totally different issues.

BTW I wasn't really shitting on all the songs on that list, as I said there are some I like, but the point I was making is that I miss having the occasional hardcore rock song that strays away from that punk sound. If there were a few songs on that list or even just one, I wouldn't be making this topic.

I look at the top 30 countdown for MuchMusic and my complaint is that there's not ONE hardcore rock song on the countdown at all. Not one. I mean I understand that music style changes with time, but what ever happened to variety?

Think we'll ever again see videos like this on the music station?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCjpyPqwX NA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5HCFRhtm gc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdcDvEg4m Sw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nH4UEcDnb ms
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K27d7Ut5b Xo

Anyone notice how different each of those videos are, while all are still hardcore rock? It's not even that every video on the top 30 is bad, but I can't stand hearing the same shit, different bands. Those 5 videos all have their own unique style of hardcore. The same can't always be said about today's version of "hardcore", which usually sounds like either a whiny version of punk or a poor attempt at classic death metal and calling it "screamo". Even some of that would be ok and I do enjoy the occasional Simple Plan song, but not when it clogs up much of the mainstream.

I can't wait until the kids born in the early 2000s or late 90s start to rebel against this current generation of teens. Just like there was a revolution in the early 90s going against all the big hair metal (also very similar styles at the time), I'm guessing that again we'll see a backlash against emo very soon. I'd say we'll see this around 2011, with the next group of teens who are sick of their older sibling's bullshit emo fad. Then maybe, just maybe I can finally enjoy the top 30 again.

Time to get our currency bashing in while we can, I mean Americans have been doing it to us for decades. Now... it's our turn :D

Yeah I know payback's a bitch... speaking of payback an American owes me $20, so what would that be in Canadian money... $200000 US? Ah it'd probably be easier to just pay me with $20 Canadian or should I say REAL money lol

Oh and hey Americans, take a good look... here's what REAL money looks like :P

See people like cellardoor6 and other Americans here with attitudes towards Canada like he does, would likely be the ones making jokes about Canada's dollar 5 years ago. I don't know how many times I've heard Americans joked about our dollar back then saying stupid things like "that's $5 American what is that in Canadian, $50000 dollars? Haha". Basically likening our money to monopoly money. Now that our dollar is worth exactly the same for the first time since 1976, suddenly these same types of Americans say it doesn't matter or that it's going to be good for the U.S. What happened to all those Americans making fun of our dollar? Did they suddenly crawl into a hole and hide or did they just switch their position? I'd say the latter because it really is hard to eat crow, so its easier to just make the current situation sound more palatable than admit their dollar, that they've bragged about for so long, just got pwned.

That's what this thread is really about is the aftermath of decades of Americans bashing Canada's dollar. Now for the first time we can finally laugh and say that the joke is now on you.

I saw the movie United 300 and it's awesome except one part bothered me. They could have played on them being arabs with box cutters more than a bunch of white guys with guns. I mean the persians and arabs are related so I don't see why they'd take that fact out of a great spoof. Also there were no guns on United 93 or in the movie 300 so that part didn't make any sense at all. If they were to mix United 93 and 300, they should have stuck to what happened in both movies, instead it's pretty much just 300 with some random highjacking with movie with the villians somehow getting guns on a plane. The only part that was remotely United 93 was the part where they rushed them with the food tray.

I find a lot of horror movies funny though. When I was a kid I watched the movie "Exorcist" and laughed my ass off. I mean come on how can you not laugh when you see a 9 year old girl screaming at a priest "Shove it up your ass, you faggot! " lol

Original Child's Play movies before it became "Chucky" movies.. again lots of kids were scared by these movies.. I found them hilarious. Seeing a little doll running around with a knife and jumpin on people. How can that scare anyone?

I think the original Evil Dead movie wasn't supposed to be a comedy, but it turned out to be so campy that it was unintentionally funny, therefore the other movies in the series were a little more obvious about it.

Lots of horror movies turn out to be funny anyway unless they're really well made.

You'd be stupid to not acknowledge the pressure U.S. politicians have put on Canadian politicians over this shit. Everytime we get closer to decriminalizing or legalizing marijuana, all of a sudden we get a visit from American politicians threatening to slow down border trade or other threats. So we have some politicians who actually are suckasses and listen to that shit, then we have some polticians who still support prohibition... most of them Conservative MPs. Add that together and that's just enough to keep weed illegal. Yet the majority of Canadians support legalizing and regulating marijuana. At least we do have medical marijuana legalized nationwide and a slowly growing business of legal marijuana producers. That gives us at least a foot in the door of legalizing marijuana altogether.

No what they did was illegal at the time actually. They bought it from the street they said. That's why they said they're gonna destroy all traces of the marijuana after the demonstration. Cops would have to have some kind of physical evidence to prove that it was real bud that they smoked and purchased illegally, rather than just testimony.

That's just Canada's news station for ya. We've always been pretty open about marijuana here. The only reason it's not legalized yet is pretty much American politicians putting pressure on Canadian politicians and add on the old guys at the top who seriously believe in maintaining prohibition.

I actually thought that's what the U.S. should have done was flood Iraq with troops and stay there as long as it takes to clean up the mess you guys made. Heck I even think this troop surge is moderate, I'd be taking American troops from a bunch of other countries that they're stationed in. Fill 'er right up. While I didn't support the war and don't believe the U.S. should have gone in there in the first place, I do believe in the old saying "you break it you buy it". So Americans who want to pull out of Iraq are really negating the responsiblity the U.S. has right now to rebuilding what you tore down. Unfortunately though many Americans can't get their heads out of their polarized "left" and "right" asses. I don't care who's fault it is for the war, it's still your country that made this mess so it's still your responsiblity to make sure to stabilize Iraq no matter how long and how many resources you have to put into it. Maybe the debt caused by this war will be a constant reminder to your children and grandchildren to really think next time before starting another stupid war that has no basis in the first place.

Yeah I know what you mean, but it misses the point really. As I said before it's not so much I care about people getting their porn relief and I don't consider it for myself either. Sure we can always buy it on regular DVD or get it free on the internet. All I'm concerned about is the success of the Blu-ray over HD-DVD. Sticking their noses in the business of what people produce on their format will certainly affect the long term market potential for Blu-ray and that's the only reason why I have a problem with it.

That being said, this is still more of a rumour and possibly even made to premote HD-DVD over Blu-ray. Another article I read seems to suggest that it is untrue:

Ars contacted the Blu-ray Disc Association for comment on Joone's allegations. "There is not a prohibition against adult content," said Marty Gordon, vicechair of the BDA US Promotions Committee and vice president of the Philips Electronics Hollywood Office. "The BDA welcomes the participation of all companies interested in using and supporting the format, particularly those from the content industry. We look forward to working with any content providers interested in providing their audience with [the] best possible high definition home entertainment experience."

Yeah I just got it now when you mentioned it. I don't check my PMs enough I guess as I've been pretty busy for the last month. That's why I haven't made many posts on Newgrounds lately.

I got no problem being the messenger. Basically, when I read an article I think will be breaking news in the PS world, I'll post it here.

Anyway, I just read something disheartening that could very well damage Blu-ray's market potential, if it is in fact true. It was another article where this porn company complained that they tried to release movies on the Blu-ray and were blocked by Sony because it doesn't want porn released in their format. If that is true, which I hope in the long run it's not and I wish to see a more official statement from Sony.... but if it is true then it will be the single biggest blunder they have made. Not that I personally need to watch porn on Blu-ray. I'm just concerned that it will hurt the format in the long run because porn is a huge industry. I'll wait for an update on this, but so far there are porn movies released on HD-DVD, while not a single one on Blu-ray. Now Blu-ray's adoption is relatively new, so that's still not proof of anything, just something to watch out for. I don't want to go with a format that tries to censor or control the movie industry.

I was looking at the XBox 360 and it costs $399.99-$499.99 in Canada. Ok and then if I want the HD-DVD add-on, that will cost over $200. So add all that up and you got a $600 core system or $700 for the premium version. That's without taxes included, so it would pretty much add up to either the same as or more than the Playstation 3.

A figure I'm looking for right now is how many HD-DVD players are in people's homes. I've read articles where they were bragging that they were in 175,000 homes. Before the PS3 launch, they were bragging that they were in 50,000 homes, while the Blu-ray was only in 10,000. I'm not sure if this is accurate. If it is true, then the HD-DVD is seriously lagging behind the Blu-ray already, since the Blu-ray is in over a million homes in North America and that's just in two months of sales.

Anyway so I read another article from a porn producer who seems to think that it's the opposite.

Website TGDaily interviewed a spokesperson for Bangbros., who said, "Blu-ray has superior quality, yes, but HD DVD is easier to produce, cheaper to produce and there are more HD DVD players in homes than there are Blu-ray players, for example in the Xbox 360."

I'd like to know where they're getting their numbers from, unless they are stupid enough to think that every XBox 360 owner has or will have an HD-DVD player.

Well I guess I'll be the guy who posts the latest news on the PS3. Nobody gave me this job, but I've been regularily checking up on the latest news because I want to be a smart shopper on this and once in a while I come upon info that could be interesting to Playstation fans here.

Anyway, some good news for PS2 owners with a nearby Gamestop or EB Games store. It would mean that PS2 owners can get a PS3, for the price of an XBox 360.

Trade in your PS2 and get $100 off a PS3

Have you ever gone into a games shop, looked at a PS3 and wished that you had an extra $100 to buy one? Well if that is the case with you, then the good news for you is that GameStop and EB Games have a deal on at the moment that will get you $100 closer to a PS3 if you are willing to forgo your old PS2.

Joystiq is reporting that if you go down to your local GameStop or EB Games and if that store has a PS3 in stock, you will get $100 off it if you trade in your old PS2. This offer applies to both the 20GB and the 60GB versions of the console, bringing the prices down to $399.99 and $499.99 respectively. To avail of this deal you are required to have a working PS2 console with a Sony brand controller, AV cable, power cord and an 8MB memory card (any brand of memory card will do) and the trade-in is subject to manager approval.

On paper this offer looks amazing if you love your old PS2 games because the PS3 can play PS2 games. However, the obvious question to ask yourself is would you be better off paying that extra $100 so that you can play your PS2 games on a console that won’t make them look horrible? Either way you have a little over a month to consider this deal.

Sony hits 1 million mark in North America with PlayStation 3

Sony's been getting a lot of flak for its roll out of the PlayStation 3. The highly-anticipated video game console missed its spring launch, delayed its European launch until this spring and came in with fewer units for its November launch in North America.

But lo and behold, the company announced at CES that it has overcome all its Blu-ray diode manufacturing problems and is now pumping out plenty of PS3s. Sony's ramped up production enough that it's shipped 1 million units to North American retailers by the end of 2006, a goal many had speculated could not be met. In fact, the PS3 hit one million units faster than its two predecessors, said Peter Dille, senior vice president of marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment America.

Full Story

I'm getting closer to buying one, but still waiting to hear that they've cleared up their backwards compatibility issues. I can't make a lot of posts here because I don't play my old PS1 really anymore and I don't have a PS2 as I'm saving every dime for a PS3. Anybody hear rumours about the Playstation 3 dumping the PS1 and PS2 parts and going with emulation software instead? If that's the case, I'll buy a PS3 when they get that part figured out.

I'm hearing a lot of funny shit though about the PS3 in regards to its Linux interface. One thing I read about is that someone's already got the Wiimote working on the PS3. It goes to show how easily the PS3 could create a similar type of interaction for certain games and potentially steal that "fun factor" market from Nintendo. That's exactly why I'm thinking of getting a PS3 over any other system is the future potential, where all the other systems are pretty much what you see is what you get.

No we don't and yes I do challenge the factbook because not one economic report in Canada has had our debt-to-GDP ratio as high as 69% since the early 90s. You obviously missed my post because I proved your numbers wrong. Any economist in Canada knows we're at 35% debt-to-GDP, which is a lot lower than the U.S. Our government is projecting that it will drop to 25% by 2010. Either the CIA factbook is calculating it differently (I'd really like to know how) or it's mistaken, simple as that.

The CIA factbook certainly seems to have our debt-to-GDP ratio overblown...

Year National debt Debt to GDP ratio Surplus/Deficit
1996-97 $562.88 billion 67.3% -$8.7 billion
1997-98 $559.92 billion 63.4% $2.9 billion
1998-99 $554.14 billion 60.6% $5.7 billion
1999-00 $539.89 billion 55% $14.2 billion
2000-01 $519.99 billion 48.3% $19.9 billion
2001-02 $511.95 billion 46.2% $8 billion
2002-03 $505.33 billion 43.8% $6.6 billion
2003-04 $496.18 billion 40.9% $9.1 billion
2004-05 $494.72 billion 38.3% $1.5 billion
2005-06 $481.50 billion 35.1% $13.2 billion

Is there a different way they are calculating it because the CIA factbook seems to be WAY off.

Yes at least one week... and if bomb ever stops depositing, then take some more time off. As long as he's a month ahead of the competition, he's got nothing to worry about.
