I know, it's a dark day when someone asks for help with a paper on the BBS but everyone else in my house is too much of a douchebag to help. I'm completely out of things to write and the stuff I did write is pretty shitty. So any corrections or even another paragraph or whatever would help. The paper has to be about how slavery impacted the civil war. This is what I have so far...
Before the Civil War even began, it seemed as if the North and South were already two different countries. The major difference between northerners and southerners were their views on slavery. Those living in the South supported slavery because without the institution of slavery, their economy would suffer. Those in the North thought slavery to be immoral and unjust. Events leading up to the Civil War were the result of tension built up between the North and South because of their varying opinions on slavery.
The enslavement of African Americans in the United States formally began around the 1630’s and continued up until the mid 1860’s. At the time slaves were first brought to the Americas, they were used on plantations and houses in the North as well as the South. Over time, slavery began to become more prominent in the South because of the abundance of cotton plantations there. The North began to look upon owning slaves as an outdated practice while it was still widely used in the South.
Many states in the North that did not need the assistance of slaves began to put restrictions on the practice of slavery or even ban it completely. Rhode Island was the first state to completely ban slavery in 1774. The states in the Northwest Territory (Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and part of Minnesota) followed in 1787 by also making slavery illegal. This was one of the first signs of separation between the North and South in America. The South now believed that the North looked down upon their morals and how they lived. In actuality, this was the truth.
