Spike Jonez didnt just want to make a movie for kids. It was a movie about being a kid. Put yourself in Max's shoes. Look at his problems. Look at what he doesn't understand about what his mom is going through. Him trying to live without a father. He runs away from it all and makes his own world, where he comes and interacts with these problems through the fictional monsters he makes.
It's way better than it wouldve been if it was just"BOY ACTS LIKE WOLF. IS SENT TO ROOM. PRETENDS TO BE A MONSTER. HAS FUN WITH MADE-UP MONSTERS. [INSERT TYPICAL KIDS MOVIE ABYSS SUCH AS SOMEONE GOING MISSING]. PROBLEM IS SOLVED. EVERYONE IS HAPPY. BUH-BYE MAX."
