Let's say we make a 5 minute video, how much would I pay? It's just an example, not a real project I had in mind. Maybe.
If you have a great idea and you're sure to make a profit from it, why not just pitch the idea to the animator? If the animator is invested and believes in the idea, split the earnings 50/50 or whatever is fair in your opinion. Theres a lot of factors that go into the equation of the earnings split, but I'll leave that up to you. Just remember this... however long it too you to write your project, it would take 12x as long for the animator to animate it. So I'll leave it to your judgement and hopefully the animator agrees.

I don't think pitching alone will help me get an animator. I just don't like the idea of wasting an animator's time, which is why I feel I need to pay them. Also, it helps to wave money around. More people are inclined to work afterwords, but either way you are indeed right. I should find someone who is as equally as passionate as I am in this project than find someone who has a preferable style.

It really does depend on how complicated the animation is, if it involves a lot of original frames constantly, the animation will take longer to make. 1 minute could take months, if its like a fighting/war animation! but if its like 2 guys standing around and talking, it could take a day. So i think you should let the animator decide how much he/she thinks a specific scene/animation is worth, and maybe try to compromise after that.

If you wanna work with a decently talented animator, for an animation thats not too complicated and is 5 minutes long, i would guess about 250$

Oh dear, no it's nothing complicated. It's just people talking for most of the time. Hmm, well at least you've given me a base to think upon.

Response to: Voice Actor Wanted Posted May 13th, 2014 in Audio

Hey guys, I'm not really doing a huge project, but rather this is just a writer's test to see if the lines I created sound natural and right when it's applied to voices. I have quite a list of characters I've already made, and more to come soon, but for now I just have 10 characters.

You can view them here:

Also, you can PM me or email me your submissions if you don't want to make a BTVA account. My email is albinotreestudios@gmail.com. Thanks a bunch!

How do you mix audio for remixes? Posted May 13th, 2014 in Audio

I tried to make a Slam Jam remix like everyone else because hey, I actually like them a lot. Well, turns out it's a lot harder than just lowering one volume and raising the other ones. So, I'm just asking a basic question, how do you mix the audio so they can match? I mean, it's hard enough to have it match the tempo with the original, but to actually have one audible without overpowering the other? It's pretty nuts, is there something I'm missing or am I just an idiot?

Who wants to get sued? Posted January 23rd, 2014 in Collaboration

I think this link speaks for itself.

Personally, it seems like it'll be my chance to actually learn how to code and make games. Any of you guys going to participate in this campaign?

Newgrounds! Take back Candy! Posted January 23rd, 2014 in General

Candy Jam "BECAUSE TRADEMARKING COMMON WORDS IS RIDICULOUS AND BECAUSE IT GIVES US AN OCCASION TO MAKE ANOTHER GAMEJAM :D"

Basically it's a campaign going against King's decision (as well as other game developer's decision) to trademark common words such as "Candy" or "Scrolls". It's very simple, make a game with the title involving one of these trademarked words, "CANDY" "SCROLL", "MEMORY", "SAGA", "APPLE" and "EDGE". Doesn't have to be amazing, shit it doesn't even have to be playable, as long as it exists, it counts.

So! Are any of you going to participate in this?

I know it says "gameplay" down there, but it just describes the skills of the sentinels. I am just trying to help that the possibly interested people get all the info they need. Maybe explaining the actual type of game might really help.

Yeah sure, I probably didn't explain that well.

Well, I suppose in terms of genre it's action, that resembles a run and gun game. Ever play Contra or Metal Slug? The gameplay is sort of like that, fast paced with a lot of enemies on screen. I don't want it to be too cluttered, so I suppose Contra is more or less the type of game it would resemble. In between each level there will be a board where you can upgrade your weapons and armor, as well as accept new quests that require revisiting the levels but with new twists, such as finding certain items in a certain amount of time, or face a horde of enemies without being hit once etc etc.

The structure isn't that linear, since there are 9 Sentinels, there's a split road you can take. At first you can only fight two of them, then once you beat one of them, two more pop up, and this creates a path. Of course, you can't fight them immediately, there's a set of levels that lead up towards the actual boss.

Since there are three playable characters, you can only play as one character in a level, however some boards (levels) contain teleports, which allows you to switch mid level. You can, however, choose one character to be your assist/striker character, and when you die, you play as the assist character. Though if your character is killed during the level or in a previous level, they will be out of commission. This means they can't be used for one level.

Crap, I derailed again. Sorry if it still doesn't make sense; basically it's a combination of Mark of the Ninja and Contra.

Since most people are asking, I might as well explain what kind of a graphical style I am looking for, and the same with music and gameplay.

Music
The music will have a very techno feel to it, but I'm not looking for anything heavy on bass (you know, like dubstep). The music will differ greatly, from a somber melody, to an exciting tune. Someone who can give range and puts emotion to their music; that's what I'm looking for. If you want a reference to something similar to what I want, then look up the Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 soundtrack.

Graphics
I've never been a fan of the retro style graphics, it's been done to death ever since the entire indie movement, and those people trying to "relive" their childhood. However, thinking it over, hand drawn animations would make the game slower, and that doesn't correlate well with the gameplay, which is fast paced and smooth. So, in a sense the graphics will resemble something like Cave Story, or Scott Pilgrim the Video Game. A sort of 16-Bit stylized graphics, small sprites to fit in several characters and more detail in the foreground and background. Something smooth and quick.

Gameplay
The game is very fast paced and each board is wide open, though the game is not open world rather they are linear levels that hold several secret items and different ways to approach them, after all the characters are vastly different from each other.

Gale can climb walls, and is the fastest of the three playable sentinels. He is equipped with a sword and two SMGs, the sword actually charges by itself thrice when left alone. The first charge stuns enemies, the second instantly kills one, and the third shoots a laser slash that kills a row of enemies. The sword can be charged by holding down the attack button, but once you let go, the charge is used, it's not retained. Gale can also turn invisible but only for a short time, the sword's charge can help it last longer.

Poppy is an up front destructive machine who can break walls and create new paths. He's the hardest to kill, yet the slowest and the least mobile. His attacks are slow yet strong, and they're almost like shotguns because they can give off a burst like a small grenade going off on his fists. His style of gameplay sort of resembles a character from a beat em up game, he can grapple, perform combos, follow ups, OTG's, counters, all that good stuff.

Blue Lagoon is a hyper fast shooting machine. Her body is equipped with laser cannons; the arms, the legs, and her main cannon being her cyclops eye. Her build was meant to run and gun, never stopping to breath, always running to kill or reach her objective. Blue Lagoon has a few different settings to her lasers, the first setting being a fast semi-auto shooting speed that lets her shoot in any direction she aims, the second being a slower burst attack that lets her shoot from every direction at once like a pulse, but the lasers don't reach very far. The third being a long distance shot via her eye, disabling all other lasers to focus on her eye's reach and power. These can all be activated on the spot.

Looking for a group for Kickstarter Posted December 18th, 2013 in Collaboration

Hello everyone, I am the Bad Shaman, and I have something to propose for any programmers, musicians, and animators who are interested.

I wish to gather a group of people to begin a Kickstarter with me. I realize most of us want to get paid, after all we need to pay our bills. As do I, however because I too am a "starving artist" I can't provide a proper pay for any of you. Especially not a team of talented people. This is where Kickstarter comes in. I'm not asking for much with this Kickstarter project, just enough to pay the team that's participating. Twenty thousand dollars is nothing in the eyes of Kickstarter, especially if we show them a product to pay for.

This is the part where most of you view my project as a joke, and one that will never succeed, because this is the part where I ask you to make a beta of the game for free. I understand completely how most of you would never even touch upon this project or even consider working for me. Why should I work for someone who won't pay me? Why should I work for someone whose kickstarter might fail, and the project would have been for nothing? Yes, I know how difficult it is to even consider this project, but if I can assemble a talented team and a passionate one as well, we have nothing to fear. Our project could exceed its limit and we could profit even further than we had hoped. But of course, this is just a prediction, not a promise.

This is my proposal. Essentially, I'm asking you to work for me for free until we get paid via Kickstarter. I don't need a rant about how this won't work, I don't need a five page essay telling me that Kickstarter and crowdfunding projects end in failure, because I've heard it all. I understand if you don't have any intent to work for me. It's difficult for artists. It really really is.

Now that I've given my proposal, it's time to tell you what my game is all about. This is for the people who stuck around and are interested in making this game with me.

Cyber Torrent (Working Title) is a game that follows three experimental soldiers who have become more machine than man.

The world has gone through an evolution, one that has brought the entire world through a new age of thinking, innovating, enhancing, working, and living. It is a world that has cities floating above the Earth, Androids running about with their owners awaiting any command given, travel has sped up substantially; when it would have taken one to reach California from New York in a matter of hours via plane, can now be accomplished in seconds via teleporter. Yet poverty still lives on. The poor are given whatever residence they can find below the floating cities, and the rich are given luxury beyond belief. A divide between nations still exists, and has widen more than ever before. Propaganda is forced on the denizens at an early age. This is a new golden age. This is an age of liars.

A war has scorched and divided the world and its inhabitants. It is a war that has been active for over 200 years. It is the reason technology has advanced so swiftly, two nations constantly at each others throats trying to prove who has the bigger guns and who can surpass the other before the inevitability of self destruction occurs. It is a war that has lasted so long that both sides have forgotten why they have been fighting in the first place. Records of the cause have been lost for nearly 100 years. This has lead one nation, Galineo, to spawn new breeds of soldiers. These soldiers have become a blight upon the very nation that had brought them life.

These are men and women who have passed away. Brain dead, without a conscience, enough room to be given the thought of killing. Natural killing machines, who know only to fight and to conquer. They are known as the sentinels. Twelve sentinels in total, three, however, weren't left dead long enough. These three are given their conscience back almost immediately and are fully aware of their wrong doing, but being machine, they cannot stop their bodies until they had already slain thousands of lives. Until one day, the Prime Sentinel, the first brought back from the dead, gained control of his body due to an overlooked code. Free will, but still retained the mind of a machine, so when he had full control of his body, he first freed his brothers and sisters in arms and then ordered them to kill for him.

When the Sentinels were given their free will back, they immediately took the command of the Prime Sentinel, for they knew only to siege and kill. The three who still retained their conscience, however, did not take the command of Prime. They finally had an opportunity to redeem their wrong doing, though they were out numbered so they immediately retreated before the rest of the Sentinels found them and annihilated them.

Now, nine Sentinels remain, and they live only to control our people and slaughter those who wish to fight back. It is up to the remaining three to stop them before they indoctrinate the entire human race into killing, thoughtless machines.

Characters:

Three Main Sentinels
1. Gale (Real Name: Jimmy Watson): At his time of life, Jimmy was a young man who enlisted into the Military as a recon soldier, trained in the shadows, and knows how to kill discreetly. Jimmy's true potential was shown during his first deployment into the battlefield. He was one of the sole survivors of a failed ambush against his squad. He cared nothing more than to save his comrades, and he was able to save 4 out of the 15 squad members. Jimmy saved as many as he could, but failed to save himself. Mortally wounded, he ordered his comrades to leave without him, and as a result died alone in the middle of the battlefield. Now enhanced with a suit that reflects light off of his body to give the illusion of invisibility, the new and revived Gale is faster, quieter, and deadlier. Equipped with a plasma sword, and silent pistols, Gale can tread along without being seen, and kill without being heard. Compassionate of his fellow companions, he will never let them down.

2. Poppy (Real Name: Adagio De Luca): A man forged, not born, unto a family who have constructed weapons since the middle ages. A blacksmith's son, Adagio has known the toughness of steel and conquered it with the heat of the sun. He has constructed the armor that the soldiers have worn in his mortal life, and forged the weapons they had used. He knows the ins and outs of every weapon and armor used on the battlefield, though this life of forgery soon ended as he retired at the age of 42. Adagio realized his weapons and armor were for a meaningless cause once he had seen through the propaganda's lies. His waking life did not last long after his retirement, for he was killed by a young lady who is rebelling against the nation. This young lady is apart of a group of freedom fighters, and has a grudge against Adagio, for his weapons has killed thousands of her people who live on the opposing nation. Now he is equipped with the latest and greatest robotic suit, with almost impervious armor and unstoppable fist weapons which can give off a blast, made by his own child. Like father, like son.

3. Blue Lagoon (Real Name: Sierra ???) Sierra remembers almost nothing of her past. All she can reclaim is her birth name, a hospital, and a giant explosion. This is where her memory ends. This was her last memory before she died. However, one memory still lingers like a haunting dream; a bleeding man, staring at her. Sierra cannot recall if this is before the hospital, or during the hospital scene. Her armor is meant for flight, not fight. Blue Lagoon is not meant to kill in close quarters, but snipe from afar. The Blue Lagoon can sustain many different environmental hazards, making it versatile and useful in all battlefield situations. Her cyclops eye can see anything and has many different filters to help seek out anything she needs to find. Her eye and arms are both equipped with lasers, making her very different from the rest of the cast.

For the current project I have in mind, I'd like to see a sort of cartoony art style. Though I would like to see a more flexible artists because the larger projects I have in mind in the future have a more realistic style, though still in the boundaries that it's still animation.

I guess a point of reference for the sort of art style I want for my first project would be Adventure Time or most Cartoon Hangover animations. Very bright, colorful, fluid, flexible to exaggerate body movement yet can be solid to show weight behind an impact.

As for a reference to the other project that I have in mind for the future (which is an animated series) would probably in the style of Paprika. Ever seen that movie? It's great, check it out.

Can you draw what I'm thinking? Posted September 17th, 2013 in Collaboration

I didn't know where to put this, art or collaboration? Well, it's not really a collaboration as this is just a small step for my project. I just want to know if I can find an artist I can count on when I need them, and an artist that can understand what I'm thinking. I'm not a great artist, but I am a writer/director. At least I'd like to think myself that. I want to find someone who can comprehend my imagination.

Again, this isn't a project that's starting as of right now, I still need to find other people and think of how I can pay them when the time comes, this is just a "looking for artist" type of thing. If you're interested, just PM me and I'll tell you what to draw. I want this to be a more personal approach, like an interview I suppose.

SOPA is shelved, but not gone! Posted January 18th, 2012 in Video Games

Hello everybody, I'm sure most of you have heard of SOPA, if not then let me give you the nutshell version of it. Basically, it gives power to big governments over the internet. If they find your content copyrighted, or remotely offensive to their company, your ass goes to the slammer. Simply put, its a censorship for the internet.

SOPA is now shelved, but not gone. I understand how pissed most of you are, and how especially pissed this website in general is. How can we do anything if we are limited to the content we can post? Can we even post? Nobody wants to be limited in their abilities.

So thats why I ask you, and Newgrounds in general to fight for the cause.

This video explains more.

For a while now I've been kinda sick of all these ideas in my head just waiting to pop out when I become a game designer or director or animator. That will take me about 6 years, and I can't really wait that long anymore.

So I was wondering, how do I properly collaborate with people here? Like how would I go about asking a programmer to do this or to ask a voice actor to send me his or her work?

I know its silly but I just wanna do something instead of wait around for another few years when nothing is legally stopping me from making a game or animation.
