I'll keep that in mind for my next project, thanks. :p

Still, it's all about experimentation. You don't know what's going to boring or fun until you actually make it. I'll just hope to make more fun stuff than boring stuff in the long run.

Any more ideas for the sequel? :) Interactive music ideas?

Okay, so more interesting graphics would help? Is it good to keep them abstract, or should I try and think of a theme?

Oh, and by the way, there's an easter egg that lets you change the color scheme.

Hmmm, any ideas on what would make it more fun?

It might help if you could say what games you do find really fun, and what's fun about them?

Wow, that's a great idea! I'll see if I can find a composer who will do that for me. :D Really cool, thanks.

Any more ideas?

Just left a response on your review. Thanks. :)

So do you have any ideas you want to share for the sequel? I'm thinking it would be cool to have more music tracks and songs by different artists, and maybe make the glitching fit the rhythm of the song, but I don't have any specific ideas yet. Gameplay ideas? Sound ideas? Graphics ideas?

I'm thinking color changes would be a nice and easy thing to do. It might also be nice to make the gameplay a little more freeform and varied, though I'm not sure how I might do that. But anyway, thanks a lot for your comments so far. :)

I submitted this game to the portal a couple days ago, but didn't get much response from it. Would you like to try it and let me know what you think?

The gameplay is pretty experimental, with minimal graphics and stuff. I'm curious what makes people like it or dislike it. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance! :)

Well, I posted this in General but they kept telling me to go the Flash forum instead. So here I am. Anyway.

I made a little Flash thing called Spring Rain. It's not an animation or a game, but something in between. I wouldn't dare to put it on the Flash Portal, but I find myself morbidly curious what you all will think of it here. :p

Environment Sketch 01 - Spring Rain

It's all generated by code. Different every time, real-time physics, etc.

Response to: Spring Rain Posted January 19th, 2008 in General

:D Okay.

Response to: Spring Rain Posted January 19th, 2008 in General

You think it should go in the Flash forum? Maybe. Though I'm more interested in general feedback than technical responses. But yeah, I might.

Response to: Should I put my game on NG? Posted December 13th, 2007 in General

It has emerged from Judgement with a score of... 3.40!

Not bad, not bad. :)

Most of the reviews were positive, and as for the complaints I got, most of them were valid. I agree that there should be bigger arenas, more flexible movement, and different levels. So yeah. I think I'm off to a good start. :)

I'm about to submit it...

I haven't changed anything in the file - not sure of a good way to change the damage system. I'll see what people say on the portal.

Response to: Should I put my game on NG? Posted December 13th, 2007 in General

The chat room is actually part of the website it was on, Kongregate. If I submit it to Newgrounds, it won't have the chat. So, no problem there.

I'll see if I come up with a way to reduce cheap wins by the AI.

Response to: Should I put my game on NG? Posted December 12th, 2007 in General

Cool, sounds good. I'll submit it soon this week. Any suggestions for improvements before I upload it?

Heh, it's been over a year since the time I uploaded the ugly, confusing first version of this game. It almost got blammed. Things should go better this time. :) Hopefully.

Response to: Should I put my game on NG? Posted December 12th, 2007 in General

You're probably right. I think I'll submit it later this week.

Response to: Should I put my game on NG? Posted December 12th, 2007 in General

Yeah it's mine. I made it.

I'm trying to find out how well the people on Newgrounds would like it. I'm curious what you think. I know there are a lot of portal submissions that sink out of sight with a low score and are never seen again (probably for good reason), and I want to make sure that I don't waste anyone's time submitting something like that.

Should I put my game on NG? Posted December 12th, 2007 in General

It's a ragdoll fighting game. Sort of a prototype, not exactly a complete game.

Braids NEON

If you have an account at Kongregate, it will keep track of your high scores. :)

I recently updated it so the menus are more user-friendly. I think it's pretty cool now, but I'd like to get your opinion. Would it be worth putting on Newgrounds? It's already on deviantART and Kongregate.

You can use either the keyboard or the mouse. (or both, if you like playing with yourself)

KEYBOARD CONTROLS
space bar - activate red player (keyboard), go into defensive guard stance
arrow keys - move red's head around
escape key - bring up menu, go to next round

MOUSE CONTROLS
left mouse button - activate blue player (mouse), go into defensive guard stance
move mouse cursor - move blue's head around

It looks awesome.

Why don't you actually try playing it, instead of complaining about how it looks? It's free. I'm downloading it right now.

Thanks for the link. :)

Ill go back to what i was saying, a decent ragdoll is lots of lines/work. What you gave an example of is so basic... no offense.

When you try to create this much hype, i was expecting you know.. the good stuff. What you sent isnt far off 5 points bouncing around each other, with a curve joining. (Admitadly theres more to it, but this dosnt even come clsoe to a good ragdoll D: )

Hi, I just found this old thread again - didn't realize there had been any new replies, sorry. About that example I posted, it was just meant to show that I have done ragdolls before. :) I wasn't trying to create hype about it.

But what would you consider a good ragdoll? (could you post a link?)

I am not sure if you are talking about graphically, like attaching and rotating movieclips, or if you mean in terms of the physics.

Anyway, before I make a ragdoll tutorial, I want to learn more advanced ragdoll stuff, like collision detection with irregularly shaped platforms, and perhaps ragdoll AI. In the meantime, I'd suggest you take a look at the Fisix Engine for your ragdoll needs. :)

That sunrise is quite elegant. Might go well with some music.

And nice water effect - is it all API or no? I couldn't tell from your answer.

Newgrounds is in its 12th year of existence, and it's been here that long for a reason. it's not overloaded with unnecessary community features. because it's not really geared to be one. it's a Flash portal at essence. that's why i've had forums with personal messaging systems before Newgrounds did. because forums are geared for community. Newgrounds is not a forum. these forums are basically icing on the already very sweet cake.

I think you have a good point - Newgrounds is a different type of site than something like what Kongregate is trying to be or what Pogo is. It is fundamentally a Flash archive site - amassing as much Flash content as it can, and allowing the best to rise to the top. Everything it does is focused around that - even contests meant to encourage people to create quality animations and games. So it's not like NG is about to get replaced.

and i'm not entirely sure what you mean by allowing games to give rankings...is there not a vote 0-5 system in place? is that not a way of determining rank?

What I mean is rankings and achievements for the players, a la Xbox Live (which I think was originally a Pogo thing).

Really? Why? It seems like a good idea to me. What do you think will cause it to fail?
I agree with you, at first glance is seems like a great idea but when you put everything together I think you'd agree with me.

It's a well designed site, but the voting system isn't nearly as sound as Newgrounds. I submitted most of my games, and OK, they got good ratings... Now what? They feature two games on the front page, so not many other games get exposure... On Newgrounds there are tons of ways to get exposure. Daily award, top toon or game of the day, front page, etc.

But that's not the main flaw. The main flaw is going to be the advertising thing. Who is going to go there to play games when they will have to watch ads before they play every 15 minutes? I can't see it becoming a Flash source for the masses because I'm not sure who would want to do that when they could just go to Newgrounds or other game sites, see some non-interfering popups, rather than having to wait to play games.

Bottom line: if the masses don't play games there -> Lack of visitors -> Lack of views on games -> minuscule earnings for Flash creators -> failure.

Even if it doesn't flat out fail, it's future looks like nothing compared to NG. Newgrounds doesn't need to pay authors to compete with this site because right now it's not real competition and in my opinion I don't think it will ever be.

Those are some good points, though I didn't know about the "ads every 15 minutes" thing. I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss it though, since Kongregate is still under development. It will be adding community features that even Newgrounds doesn't have, for example some that will allow games to give rankings and keep persistent game data attached to player profiles. Don't forget that Kongregate's model is based on the successful game site Pogo, and its founder was the technical director there.

Thanks for sharing your views. We'll just have to wait and see what happens now. :)

So no interactivity, but what about sound? Are sound files allowed in the library?

I take it the animation doesn't have to be a traditional story-based one? I have actually been thinking of doing something like this just on my own. I'm not sure I'd want to give up the source though. Maybe if I finish it I'll just post a link here to let people know, but not actually enter it in the contest.

Thanks for sponsoring the contest, it is a nice thing to do. :)

Don't mess around with any mouse code. Just do what dELtaluca said, put this in the first frame:

Stage.showMenu = false;

Only do that! Don't add any of the other code that people have posted.
