Also, all these game screencaps look so good, aahh! I can't wait to play them. I promised my partners that I wouldn't post any screencaps yet, but I think our game is looking pretty slick.

Also, it'd be cool if you included this button somewhere in your game. It will link to a future collection page. (It's currently in AS2, but if someone wants to convert it for me and post it in the thread, that'd be a big help.)

Response to: Game Jam 6 Go! Posted December 4th, 2011 in Collaboration

Here is a button you should include somewhere in your game, whether it be above the preloader, in the introduction, or somewhere on the menu. It's not really required that you include it, but it will link to a future collection page so people can play the other Game Jam 6 games.

That is exactly how I do it. I'm sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings. When the jams have random teams, it's usually the Wildcards who end up being offended. Maybe in the future, Wildcards won't have to be put into teams and the groups that need them will seek them out like freelance workers. This would be a Darwinian solution to the problem, but it would definitely take away from the fun of being placed in a team.

Maybe teams could be chosen in a "kickball" fashion: the programmers will take turns recruiting other people on their team. Once again, it would eventually leave out a lot of people who aren't as experienced, but it would be really interesting to try.

If anyone can think of another solution, let's here it. Someday, I hope to have a system that does all the work for us, so less bad feelings get pushed around.

Do you usually have trouble keeping in contact and working with people online? Kurt Luther, a former Newgrounds intern, and his research group from Georgia Tech have developed a tool called Pipeline to help make online collaborating smoother. I haven't tested it out myself, but I'm looking forward to giving it a try this weekend!

For those of you who are interested it giving it a try for this jam, the guys at Pipeline are going to be giving away $100 each to the three best scoring games that make use of the system. Read all about it here.

Last note: let's see some screenshots in this thread! Remember, this is a community effort!

I'm halfway through my second year in college. I was studying art but now I think I'm switching to graphic design. I don't really know what I'm going to do, but I'm not very worried.

You can export anything that can be seen directly on the timeline into an .avi with file>export.

OP might consider switching to Flash 8. In my opinion, everything works just as smoothly and it runs well on old computers.

Response to: Native Function Error Posted July 20th, 2011 in Game Development

I still receive a cyclic redundancy check error when I attempt to backup one of the .flas. Very odd.

Response to: Native Function Error Posted July 20th, 2011 in Game Development

I disabled the extensions and did a restart, and now it works fine. So strange, I'm a little paranoid now. The .flas wouldn't be copied or moved in a windows command prompt which made me think they were corrupt. I guess I'll mess around with it some more, thanks for your help, Mintpaw.

Native Function Error Posted July 20th, 2011 in Game Development

Today, I get a "Javascript Error" that states exception thrown into native function whenever I attempt to open a .fla with Flash 8. I've never seen this before and I'm afraid that all of my .flas have become corrupt. Is there a solution to this? Thanks.

I never look at portal scores, I do read reviews though, after I've played it through myself.

At 6/20/11 12:49 AM, tenentenen wrote: whats the cutoff for for sure not in the jam?

If you guys don't think your game is finished, then don't submit it. You can, however, upload the .swf to your NG File Dump and post it in the submission thread, and it will be played by a few people and considered for placing. And when you finally finish and submit the game, it will always be added to the collection.

@Ricepirate, Wurmy, Acmedyne, and RedHarvest:
It sucks you guys won't be able to submit on time, but you guys should certainly finish and submit to the portal in the next week. Your game will be added to the Game Jam 5 collection and I'll still write something about it in the features and the reviews.

Yeah, but if you're a couple minutes late it's not big deal. The fact that you made a game in the weekend alone is rewarding enough.

I thought we were using this timer? Though it wasn't set up by Austin, so I guess it's not guaranteed to be accurate.

That timer is an hour early. You guys have a little over seven hours to finish.

I probably won't finish mine because my roommate had company over and I spent a lot of time with them. It was a great exercise, though.

If it's a book and it has a Wikipedia article, you're good to go. You might not score many originality points with a Rorschach stealth game, however.

Game Jam 5 Posted June 17th, 2011 in Collaboration

GAME GAME 5
June 17-19th

Read about it here.
Submit your finished game here.

You now have until 11:59pm (Central Time GMT -6) on June 19th to create a flash game and submit it to the portal. There were no sign-ups this time, so anyone reading this now is allowed to participate. You will also be allowed to team up with whoever you like in order to finish the game!

THE THEME

For the Newgrounds Game Jam 5, the theme will be "Literature." You must somehow adapt a published work of fiction/non-fiction into a game! Consider classic novels you might have read in High School or this year's bestsellers. (Memoirs are allowed and encouraged, but try to stay away from biographies or history. Just because you can assume a book has been written about The Bay of Pigs, for example, doesn't mean you should make a game about it.) The work must be published and recognized, not something you wrote. If the book has a Wikipedia article, you should be fine.

There have been lots of games developed in the indie community that have been based off of literature, for example The Great Gatsby.

Good luck guys! AND MAKE SURE TO POST SCREENSHOTS IN THIS THREAD!
