Nationalism was the cause of World War One. Do YOU want to cause a new World War?
:P
Jokes aside, I think Canadians and Quebecois should be focusing on their similarities, not on their differences. I consider myself an Unionist: United we Stand, Divided we Fall. I'm proud of my culture and language, my ancestors were french (except that austrian guy from the Carignan regiment, but meh). Unlike most other in the province, I remember. I remember that we were fucked with France and that most French Canadians were happy to finally see the war end, even if they were now conquered. I remember that Quebec was a major proponent of the Confederation. I remember a long history of conflicts, between ourselves and others, between languages and cultures. And I don't think we need them anymore.
Years from now, I'll still be asking "Why can't we just get along?"
I'm from quebec, and I agree that separatism is sometime not much more than a big-wankfest. Many people keep going on about how much we're "different" and have a "culture" we must protect and all that, not really realizing they look like arrogants bastards who think they're better than the rest of Canada. But too many posts in the thread are nothing more than mindless stereotyping. What I don't like about separatists I know is only a portion of them, not all of them. Canada was founded by both francophone and anglophones. Why can't we all just get along?
I wish I could do this with Canadian History. Except give it a positive spin, since most people tend to view our history in a bad light. That,s the impression I get, anyway.
Good work. Not necessarily objective, but it's not really the goal, is it?
Violent games does not create violence.
Violent people creates violence.
At least, that's my way of thinking. I'll admit that there are some really violent video games out there that shouldn't be played by everybody. I never really liked those kind of games, and I still can't understand why GTA is popular. But heh, to each his own I guess.
Me, in the first situation, I wouldn't kill anyone. I'd never be able to.
Punching one maybe, steal surely, but not raping or killing.
The second one, I'd drown. Even if my own life was in danger, I'd never be able to kill anyone. I just don't have what it takes. To actually extinguishe a life deliberately isn't easy. At least, not for everyone.
All I can say about Jesus is that I liked Jesus of Montreal and tyhat there were some good philosophical discussions about him in it. Otherwise, my knowledge comes mostly from I have heard and I think .
I have heard that the Jew had almost nothing with the death of Jesus. I'm not sure about it's historical truth, however.

And it's not as if it has anything to do with what I said. It is not good to have about 80% of import/export being with the same country. If it collapse, so do you.
Actually, Canada became independant in the 1930s', with the Statute (is that the right word?) of Westminster. But that is only nitpicking and doesn't have much importance in this discussion.

No, it doesn't. The first decision said that. The two ones that followed clearly said that Canada was right in this. Next time, read the text.
This whole problem shows that there's omethign wrong with Canadian trade. We've got to diversify our trades, because if we continue to trade so much with America and not much with others, we're economically linked to them. Wich isn't a good thing.
Wait until you see a Ministry of Truth. Then run.

And when the government do stupid things, such as the whole thing with the loans recently, the students care enough to go down in the streets, protest and even make a STRIKE! Things are not as messed up as they may seem in the schools. (Although in some areas, they are)
Well, we heard about what we did in ther Media here. Entire Universities were emptied, and many high-schoolers joined them in the streets. It was the big thing in the media in Quebec for a while.
Quebec's education's... far from perfect. Th teachgers are not as well treated as they could be, the schools are somewhat falling apart, there is no budget for any activity at school, we have two different colleges, following each other, for no real reason, it's a mess. But I'd still choose it any day beforwe whatever **** it is they have down south in America. Not because it's American, but because I prefer how it works here. I'm used to it. The teachers are cool (well, some of them at least) and care about teaching.

GOD: I refuse to prove my existence, for proof denies faith and whitout faith I am nothing.
MAN: But the Babel Fish is obviously a parting gift, and therefore prove your existence. So you don't exist. CQFD
GOD: I hadn't thought of that.

Now you don't want to kill God, do you?

*GASP*
That article was gold. Thanks for sharing.
If a ban ever come (not that it would affect me, I'M CANADIAN!), there's a good side to it. Maybe then I'd finally find people to play these weird RPGs (such as Wraith : the Oblivion) with. *sniffles* I'm so lonely.
Democracy, in order to evolve and survive properly, would probably need more than only the two same party for three hundred years. Well, closer to the two hundred, but that's not important. There are independant parties, and independant candidates and all, but they're not important enough to change much. No matter how much the party changes over time, no matter how different they are (or aren't), there still are only two sets of opinions. That put things in a state of continual duality: right vs left, black vs white, north vs south, friends vs enemies, etc. It leaves little place for a middle ground or a third path. And it tend to create a climate of continual conflict. While still democratic, it's not as much as it could be.
And, on American Foreign Affairs, there has still been no official apology for Lumumba, Chile or any of the fucked-up things they did during the Cold War and the years following. I'm not sure wether they did or not about Vietnam. As it stands, the mess in Irak is really not that surprising. They could have made it really good, Iraki were glad to be free from Saddam. But the way things were handled there...
Sad indeed.
Liberals are way too far on the right to me. In fact, many 'Conservative' point of view are in fact based on Economical Liberalism, a 'philosophy' that disappeared in the 19th century when it failed utterly. Liberals and Conservatives are always hard to tell apart, especially in Canada (where I'm from, anyway). They're closer than they like to think. Myself, I'm a Social-Democrat. And, come next election, I'll vote NDP. Not because they are the NDP, but because last elections, I really liked their program.
Sometimes, I think Lucifer had the right idea. Then I remember how the whole mess turned out, and I just shake my head in disgust.
*Sigh*

The government declared martial law (ooo I dunno if thats how you say that in english... well abolition of personal liberties, the army can arrest you, etc) and caught about the entire group. Thats about the only extremists we had in Quebec. It was James Cross the Trade Commisioner and Pierre Laporte the Quebec minister of employment. I think the killed Laporte(not sure on spelling).
Yep, Pierre Laporte was killed by the FLQ, wich sparked the Martial Law problem. Hundreds were arrested for absolutely no reasons, suspected of being FLQ sympathisers. They even made some movies about it. But you must admit that terrorists killing aminister is something, isn't it?
As for separatists, my whole family is made of separatists. Usually, they say we've got a really different culture whitout really bothering to explain in what we are different. I've learned our history, and I'm proud to be Canadian. A french speaking canadian, but canadian nonetheless. I say, we're all diffrent, eh? Ontario is diffrent from Quebec wich is diffrent from nova Scotia, right? We can all learn to be together, right? Except Alberta, no one likes Alberta.
Our relations with 'The States' are pretty good. Some years ago, I went to my father's cousin wedding near Boston. We've got family in there. Americans aren,t that different from us. We're all humans, and their are good and bad people everywhere. But the Bush Family should totally get shot. Painfully.
Boy, am I glad I live in Canada. Here, we still have privacy. I hope.
Me, if I were King, I'd try to make a sort of constitutional Monarchy, in which the King's helped by Prime Minister chosen by the people, while retaining enough power to actually merit being called a King. Except I won't be called a King.
Storm I, Emperor of Canada, King of Quebec and Newfoundland, Prince of Argentina and Peruvia (conquest in South America, conquistador style), et cetera. Oh yeah, that sounds good.
Anyway, I'd care for my people and try to defend their interest in the geopolitical arena, while making sure that everyone in the country have his chicken to eat(Henri IV reference). Since I'm Emperor by decree of God, that must mean I know what I'm doing, right?
