A lot of people from countries other than the US were in those towers, so it *is* a "we" with lots of people. And is it REALLY so horrible if someone not directly affected mourns this? It's no different than most Americans.

Response to: Political phone company? Posted May 31st, 2003 in Politics

I assume you mean Working Assets? They've been my long distance company for about 6 months now. They're great. The rates are nice and low, there's not a ton of ads shoved in with the bill, switching was SO easy...

There's other features too. Every month they send a little newsletter about issues and books and who they're giving money to. I just got the yearly donation report, I can dig it out if you want more details.

I definitely recommend them. One thing I'd mention is to suggest you find someone you know who uses them. They can be your "referrer" or something and get more free hours, and I think you get more as well.

Response to: 05/30: No $ for min-wage children Posted May 30th, 2003 in Politics

How about all these programs that could have been funded if the tax cut hadn't been passed?

http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2003/05/29/tax_cuts/index.html

The highlights, I think:
"With that $330 billion, for instance, the president could have bought health insurance for all uninsured children, helped states erase their budget deficits, completed Superfund cleanup at the nation's worst toxic waste sites, and funded the new state and local emergency personnel the Homeland Security department says are needed in the war on terror -- and still had money left over."

Response to: Gays and Christians should unite Posted May 30th, 2003 in Politics

You know, there's no proof that in Biblical times there was even a concept of "homosexuality"? If you follow various translations of the Bible back, you'll find the that passages today that talk about homosexuality being a sin spoke of very different things once upon a time.

Plus, I've read, if you look at the Aramaic language (the langauge Jesus probably did most of his speeches in), there's no concepts of "good" and "evil" as there are today. Jesus probably spoke instead of the "ripe" and "unripe," or those who are ready and those who aren't.

That puts a whole new spin on things, doesn't it? It's why I can love Jesus and hate the way so many Christians choose to believe in him.

I believe that's because someone has already added a link to this discussion that leads to an article on the dangers of a vegetarian/vegan diet.

Clearly, too much of anything is not a good idea. But extreme diets aren't a good idea either.

Sorry, but I have a feeling that wouldn't happen.

It might be more like "You don't have health insurance? Or cash? OK, we can treat you when you fill out these seventeen forms in triplicate. Then we'll have to get verification of your financial difficulties, which will take five to seven days. We'll call you next week."

I think we can all see the problems with that. And really. If the drug companies weren't so greedy, a lot of drugs would be cheaper and they wouldn't fight having generics coming onto the market. I wouldn't be surprised if lots of Third World nations wouldn't get enough.

I always try to have plenty of change or small bills when I go into the city (not many homeless here). I don't worry about what they'll use it for. In their situation, I'd probably want to be drunk or high too.

No, there's no SARS cure. I meant "what about all the people who, at some point in the future when there might be a cure, won't be able to afford it?". Sorry for the confusion.

Maybe the WHO should start global healthcare.

What about all the people who won't be able to afford the SARS cure? What about all the people who still get the Plague today? It'd be wonderful if people took care of each other, but too many people are too greedy.

We did, in fact, occupy Germany and Japan for a while after the war.

As for many of the other items, I was attempting to point out that the wording was not accurate. It does no one any good to use such wording. You won't win in a debate, no matter how correct you might be, if your opponent can continually call into question your word choices. People should attempt to be more precise.

It's also very easy for pregnant women to get state aid when it comes to paying for the OB/GYN.

There's also hospitals that can't turn away people if they lack insurance of the ability to pay for treatment if they go to the emergency room. The treatment given there is given free of charge to them, then paid for by government monies. Sorta like the pro-bono medical world.

We're not totally hopeless, us Americans.

Many people covered under these programs are only partially covered. For example: both of my fiance's parents work, and he's covered under their insurance. We still have to pay $20 copay per doctor appointment, and often all of the perscription costs.

Response to: A Different Strategy for N. Korea Posted May 26th, 2003 in Politics

I'm certainly not advocating war. I think war is proof of failure.

Consider this, however: if N.Korea is begging for attention, and feels they're being ignored...what might they do to make us take notice? Especially seeing how quickly we all noticed global terrorism after 9/11.

I certainly hope it doesn't come to that, but it's a possibility.

If I remember correctly, most of the protesters weren't protesting the President, but his pending invasion of Iraq.

* First president in US history to order a US attack and military occupation of a sovereign nation;

Didn't we occupy Germany and Japan after WWII? So this one seems right out.

* First president in US history to have the United Nations remove the US from the human rights commission;

Not entirely fair; the UN isn't nearly as old as the US.

* With a policy of 'disengagement' created the most hostile Israeli-Palestinian relations in at least 30 years;

He didn't do this by himself, so it isn't fair to blame him alone.

* Failed to fulfill his pledge to get Osama Bin Laden 'dead or alive';

To be fair, he's failed thus far but might succeed in the future.

* Removed more freedoms and civil liberties for Americans than any other president in US history;

Actually, during the Civil War Lincoln suspended a number of rights. If he didn't suspend more, it's probably darn close.

And he still has a 70% approval rating?! So it goes!

That approval rating shrinks dramatically when people are asked about domestic affairs.

I don't like Dubya either, but we're not going to win by lieing and exaggerating.
