The best way to get more experience in coding is to just practice on your own stuff. Most artists won't want you to code anything major, either because they're making an animation and need a simple menu, or are making a game and will want someone with experience and a decent portfolio.
Try doing random things in flash, just to practice.
For example, when I was starting out I made things like:
- Rotating a movieclip towards the mouse
- Mouse Trails
- Basic Game Engines (with missles shooting towards the mouse, turrets, following enemies, etc.)
- Output Panel Adventure Games. (using trace() commands and key detection to play a text-based adventure game)
My advice to all beginners or inexperienced programmers is to find something YOU love and just do it. Don't do it for attention, awards, a good score or good reviews. Just program something for the hell of it, and if you're lucky, it will turn out to be a great game or engine that people will love anyway. Just load it with a bunch of awesome features, then keep expanding and expanding it.
My particle effects engine, Particle Playground, started out as a simple mouse trail.
Good luck with your programming!
