I can do impersonations if I have to, but I honestly hate it. I prefer to create a character with their own cadence, quirks, and temperament. Impersonation kinda takes the creativity out of the art, you know?
Just be sure you're not ruling out mimicry as a valuable skill to a voice actor. It's not uncommon for directors and producers to ask for sound-alikes to famous characters, or even sound-alikes of an actor who previously filled a part and needed replacement for whatever reason. Not to mention, it's very fun to mimic or steal mannerisms from a character you see on TV, and adapt them to your own original voice.
As many have said, it really depends on your recording environment. It also depends on your natural vocal tone.
If your voice has a naturally warmer, brighter tone, you'll want a mic that brings that out; the Rode NT1A is known for its bright sound, and would pay that voice type a perfect compliment. My voice is most resonant in the mid-low range, so something a little bassy but crisp works best for me - and my Studio Projects C1 brings my voice out wonderfully, as it would for anyone with a similar vocal range. The AKG 420 and AT4040 are also good matches for that vocal tone. I'm told the Sennheiser 421 and the Shure SM7B are outstanding for deeper voices.
When you're looking to purchase a microphone that's going to cost you $200 or more, you want to do your homework; research every possible mic, listen to mic demos, and talk to your peers to get their opinions. I spent a good two weeks researching microphones before I decided to purchase my C1.
All the mics I mentioned above are wonderful mics in their own right; it just depends on your recording environment, and your natural tone and the microphone that best suits it. There is no 'best mic for vocal recording' - although many folks would probably just toss out the multi-thousand dollar Neumann U87 if you asked 'em that same question. 8P
Now, if we're talking the best mic for beginners? The Samson C01U, Blue Yeti, or AKG 120 are as good as it gets for low cost USB mics. All of these mics work fine for multiple voice types, and are super easy to use. I think the Blue Yeti gets the edge because of its versatility.
Hey hey, this is pretty slick! Thank ya much for gettin' this all set up, Tom~ c:
Also, hiya folks an' all that.

Glad I caught this before the deadline! Good luck, everybody!
Been a fan of Matzerath's for many, many years! Happy to see him still being promoted.
I was giving a lot of thought to attending the Pico Day event this year, but if there won't be one, that's too bad~ Still, hope to see lots of great Pico toons regardless!

And hello Brendon man.
I got called in to cover a closing shift at work today, so there's no way I'll get this finished in time. Bummer, man.
Guess that's what I get for procrastinating. :v

Apatheria's 2012 Character Demo Reel
As for a little about myself, I've been voice acting for nearly three years now. I also have a background in theater. I have participated in countless amateur projects, and I've been paid for professional work as well.
My range extends from low all the way up to medium-high. As far as age range, I can hit anything from preteens all the way up to elderly gents. My major strength is big energy, but I'm more than capable of playing a huge range of characters, from the hammy superhero to the psychotic supervillain, the big booming male announcer, to the schoolyard bully. Need a drill sergeant? How about a bumbling old drunk? Whatever you need, I'll be up to the challenge.
My current setup is a Studio Projects C-1 Condenser hooked up to an Art Tube MP Preamp.
Money makes the world go round, the world go round, the world go round~
Do it, sir.
Congrats to all who were chosen!
Lookin' forward to seeing the final animation~
