Topic: Odd Google Search Suggestion

Posted: 05/21/09 06:43 AM

Forum: General

So, I just searched "how to make ice" in google. It was one of those boring searches you do to see if anything interesting comes up. Anyway, a few links down it said "see results for: how to make meth." Now, I understand that "ice" can be slang for crystal meth, but I think that it is a ridiculous suggested result. If people want to make meth, they'll search for that, not "ice".

Link if you want to check and are too lazy to type
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=
off&q=how+to+make+ice&btnG=Search

Any thoughts? Any other odd suggestions? Anyone want to bring up the old "Did you mean 'French Military Defeats'?" joke?

So, I go to college a few miles for Cold Spring, MN, where there is a potential infection. They are still testing. Now, I am a skeptic by default, so I'm waiting to see. I think it's more likely this girl just has a normal flu virus, but they're concerned because she was in contact with "someone who was in Mexico." Random question: How many flights are there to and from Mexico into the us every day? Does anyone know where to find that information?
Also, from playing Pandemic 2, I know the safest place on earth will be Madagascar, so if it hits there, that's when we know were effed.

So, question, generally from the Catholic calendar: If someone gives up something for lent, starting Ash Wednesday, when do they generally resume the vice? Is it after the Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday (today)? But Good Friday is also a day of fasting, so do you sneak in your chocolate and masturbation between mass and midnight on Thursday? Or do you wait until Saturday? Or do you just wait until Easter?
I know asking this is a long shot, since most of NG expresses a general atheistic or agnostic view, but I'm just curious. I Googled this, and found about when Lent runs from, but not if the pledge is supposed to end exactly when Lent ends, or on Easter, since there is a day of fasting in between

Anyone thoughts on the matter?

So, I have a question. I remember this from like 12 years ago in grade school gym. We did like a "dance" involving two long sticks (pieces of pvc pipe with something in them to make them rattle) and there were three people involved, two people to move the sticks and bang them against each other and the ground (each person holding one end of each stick) and one person dancing in the middle, kinda like jump rope, hopping in and out. Does anyone remember doing this? I know some other schools did it too. What was it called?

Is it really bumping if the response is in the same minute? I always considered bumping to be like when it got to the second page.

Also: the same episode rips off "The Susie" episode of seinfeld!
From "The Susie":
George's plans to take Alison to the ball are put in jeopardy when he finds out that she is planning to break up with him beforehand. He therefore goes to great lengths to avoid her saying that 'if she can't find me, she can't break up with me.' when Alison can't find George to break up with him, she uses Kramer as a go-between and Kramer breaks up with George on her behalf.

Wyatt is hiding from Marlowe because he knows she wants to break up with him. She gets around this by having Jonesy do the breaking up for her. Right down to the line "if she can't find me, she can't break up with me."

lawsuit anyone?

Yep. Seinfeld totally owns that idea

Edited slightly from what is on wikipedia to complete the entire relevant portion of the episode summary:

Caitlin meets a cute boy named Calum at a party and later realizes he's a nerd so she writes him a fake phone number, but she writes the number on the back of her very own Khaki Card, on which she saved shopper's card points since she was 14 years old. So Caitlin needs to find a way to search for Calum and get her Khaki card back. The number is for a movie theater, and she wants to give them her number so when Calum calls, they can give him her number. But the creepy cashier at the movie theater is interested with connecting with him, so she gives him the number of The Penalty Box where her friend Jen works. She gets injured by a hockey player and her makeup smears when she cries and looks ugly. When she meets up with Calum, he doesn't have the punch card, and when he asks if they can meet up later, he gives her a fake number.

Elaine's quest to become a "Submarine Captain" at a local shop in order to get a free submarine sandwich and a captain's hat is crushed when she realizes she used her punch card at the party to give her fake number to the denim vested guy. . Elaine goes to the place that her fake number reaches: an off-track betting parlor. She wanted to give them her real number, so when the denim vest guy calls, she can connect with him. But, the creepy men at the parlor are interested in connecting with her, so she gives the number for H&H where Kramer is working. The bagel place becomes very steamy and makes Elaine look ugly. When she meets up with the denim vested man, he doesn't have her punch card, and gives her a fake number when she asks if they could meet up later.

So, for reasons I'm not sure of, I was watching 6teen on Cartoon Network. And in this episode, one of the girls gave her fake phone number to a guy on a punch card for a clothing store, and amusing antics ensued in her effort to get it back. The fake number was a movie theater, and she talked to a man behind the counter, and I remember the dialogue being almost exactly the same as when Elane did the same thing (it was a sandwich punch card and a bank or post office counter) in the episode The Strike when Kramer got a job at a bagel shop. Even in the seinfeld, elane got all steamed and her makeup and hair frizzed. The blonde got beatup or something and looked ugly, too. Both got fake numbered.
Seriously, has anyone else noticed this? Isn't this illegal plaigerism?

So, I just saw Monday's XKCD.

And, here, I have a question: Is the man in the last panel supposed to be Don Quixote? If I remember correctly, he fought a windmill, thinking it to be a giant. Then again, it was a really effed up book, and I could be misremembering. Anyway. Thoughts?
