Response to: Flash CS3 crashing Posted July 2nd, 2008 in Game Development

Next time it happens, try letting it sit for a while. Some mp3s are incompatible with CS3, and it sometimes takes a while for the program to process what's happening and then tell you that there were problems reading the file.

Your duplication code should rename the movieclip when you duplicate it. You can use the new instance name for hitTest and things.

The funniest part of that game is when your bridge breaks and then the train flops around like a dying fish and then finally strains its way offscreen. Jerking around at that speed, all the people inside would be dead already :[

Response to: How bad is Sonic Heroes? Posted July 1st, 2008 in Video Games

That game was the worst waste of money I've ever experienced. Irritating character voices, The worst camera I've ever had to suffer through, "individual" stages that were really identical, absolutely shitty bosses, and the horrible, horrible 3-character system. It had some gems of horrible voice-acting, though. "WOW, LOOK AT ALL THOSE EGGMAN'S ROBOTS!"

Response to: Creepiest wikipedia articles ever? Posted July 1st, 2008 in General

Most of those links weren't really creepy, just interesting to me-- I'm not surprised almost all of them have at least one book or film related to them.

Ancient archeology stuff is always cool to hear about. When I read about something like the Rosetta stone or the Voynich Manuscript, I'm not frightened, just captivated. Who wrote them, what do they mean, why do they exist? Sites like Stonehenge and the Easter Island heads are just as cool. It took immense manpower and sometimes decades of labor to build these things-- and why? It's been speculated that the stone slabs in Stonehenge were dragged for miles to be put in that one spot. Easter Island heads weigh hundreds of tons. They too had to be dragged long distances to be put in their places.

Reading about psychological/biological disorders like Alien Hand Syndrome is also interesting to me.
why do these things happen? What causes them, how common are they? I think something like AHS must be caused subconsciously. The brain must be controlling the limb directly for it to perform specific, defined, cohesive actions like opening a door, but the person has no conscious knowledge of doing it-- the limb expresses their subconscious impulses and their "training" to react to certain things in certain ways.

Reading that article, it seems like that hospital is pretty screwed up as it is. Near the end they talk about how it's understaffed and undersupplied, and how patients are often mistreated and neglected.

That's so terrible.

Response to: Torture game and $100. 2 of 20 Posted July 1st, 2008 in NG News

The funniest part about Fox News' massive freakout over the torture game is that they really have no clue what a lot of the flash games on here are like :3 If they played, say, Madness Interactive, there'd be a story on that too. When Fox sees something they can rant and squeal about, they definitely rant and squeal, but rarely follow up on their story or continue their "investigation," as they like to call their little bullshit sessions.

I agree with SecretClock-- we should have an anti-press day. In fact, I think this site needs more themed days/contests, period. Maybe not with prizes or anything, but just an idea or theme to give people inspiration. Maybe people get enough inspiration from the events surrounding NG as it is. If a bunch of people made anti-Fox flashes, you KNOW Fox would report on it. "...personally insulting news anchors, profanely denouncing Fox News, and terrorizing innocent people like an INTERNET HATE MACHINE"

Response to: The Flash 'Reg' Lounge Posted July 1st, 2008 in Game Development

I haven't tried the NG Flash API, and I don't think I will. It's a good idea in theory, but unless your game is really incredible and is consistently played even after it's dropped off the frontpage or whatever, you'll never make more than a few hundred dollars off it. By getting sponsored, you can get 2 or 3 times as much in one payment.

Probably not a good place to run to, considering the concerted effort that had to be made for the country to remain outside the conflict-- it is right next to Germany, you know.

Response to: if you could make any flash game... Posted June 30th, 2008 in Game Development

This thread could be an interesting place for programmers, artists, etc. to meet and collaborate. If someone has a great idea, with actual potential, but can't do it themselves, they might be able to get exposure for their idea by posting it here. idk.

ANYWAY, these are a few ideas I've been throwing around in my head. Please don't steal them :c

1. A great 2D fighting game, with lots of characters, high-quality animation, and online multiplayer. Like old-school arcade fighters, but even more kickass.
2. A rail shooter, done in Flash.
3. A game where you carry some enormous, heavy object through the game. You can roll it, throw it, kick it, whatever it takes; using it to mow down enemies and solve puzzles, etc.
4. There's a platformer I've been thinking about for a few years now that revolves around an explorer in a huge Mayan temple or something, searching for treasure and fighting things. I had some notion of using sunlight for a lot of things-- redirecting its rays with mirrors.

There are more, but I can't think of them right now. If anyone's interested in making a game with me, based on these concepts or otherwise, PM me :D
