Oh by the way, is it normal to be stuck at a certain % for a long time when formatting a hard drive? Because I just got my new 1.5 TB hard drive and it's been going pretty fast at first, but now after like an hour it's still stuck on 73%...

Yeah every sever I join is laggy and I'm always the one with the highest ping. Surfing the web is slow as hell, and recently I downloaded Empire:Total War from steam and my speed was around 60kb/s.

Since the slowdown is a new symptom, your hardware really isn't what I would focus on being the cause. Possibly the health of your computer (i.e. spyware, viruses, etc). Have you gone through and run scanners to remove any spyware that may be lingering around the system?

I run scans weekly with Spybot S&D and Avast! anti-virus. I've only had 2 viruses ever since I had this computer. Both were removed with no harm.

I think my ISP is AT&T or SBC global or something like that. I'm not sure what you mean by my area but I live in California, City of Rosemead.

Sometimes bandwidth is shaped to allow some traffic to have priority over other traffic. So if you aren't seeing slowdowns all across the board, then your theory about the tubes being clogged due to winter break may still be true.

Well some of my friends have also been experiencing slowdowns so I don't think I'm the only one. And ANYTHING that uses the internet is slow. Including playing online on the PlayStation 3.

Vista's okay but can be annoying and sluggish at times. Unless you have a good computer, you're probably going to get angry at it later on.

I haven't tried Windows 7 yet, but I heard it was good so you might want to get that if you are disappointed in Vista.

For me, Vista is good enough. I don't really care, as long as it's not anything before Vista. I haven't crashed before so I'm not sure what those people are saying.

If you want to compare, try asking an expert at a computer store or something.

Anyway, you can download "Avast!" from www.avast.com.

It offers real time protection, accurate detections on infected websites, and I've never gotten any false positives. Updates are automatically downloaded for you daily (a voice starts talking and tells you) but you can change the settings if you want to.

You can also get different skins for the interface, just for fun and looks!

You might also want to get anti-spyware, since spyware is more "hidden" and undetectable.

That's where Spybot - Search & Destroy comes in. Very easy to use and even detects tracking cookies. Updates are no automatic unfortunately, but check for updates once a week and you'll be fine. It also offers real time protection like Avast! and a system settings protector.

Hey guys, I hope you can help me out on this...

Basically my internet has been VERY slow these past few weeks. I haven't tried anything yet because I decided to wait it out, but I guess that didn't work.

At first, I thought it was because of winter break, many people were on the internet at once. But then my friend has the same ISP and he says everything's fine for him.

My ping, when playing a game like L4D2, rises up to around 600. My computer is a gaming computer from alienware, and I've ran L4D 2 with no lagging problems at all before so I don't think it's a performance issue.

The speed really jumps around a lot, sometimes it's normal, sometimes it's fast, and a lot of times it's VERY slow... like up to the point of 50kb/s kind of slow. It's normally 150kb/s.

If anyone can give my any help, many thanks to you.
