Comic Jam Comments and Critique Posted August 22nd, 2011 in Art

Hello everyone.

The Comic Jam is over, and was a minor success with 9 total comics submitted. I am making this thread to ask the Newgrounds population to offer their comments and critique of each of the comics. Everyone worked hard to get their comics out on time (for no reward), and it would be great if everyone could take a little of their time to tell the artists what you thought of their comics.

Without further ado, here are the comics that were submitted (in random order, using random.org/lists). The theme was "Night".

Kuoke - Red Light, Black Light

...maybe next time

Well the idea for the Jam was not so much about paying attention to detail in the pages. Instead it was supposed to be about just doing a comic without wasting time sitting around and thinking, and editing.

Looking good people. If anyone else has any works in progress (WIPs) to post, I'm sure we'd all love to see them.

I'm only 5 and a half pages into my 24 at this point, so I don't know whether I'll make my goal. I may have to spend less time on each panel.

Response to: Comic Jam Information Thread Posted August 19th, 2011 in Art

I've done the first page. 23 more to go, I guess.

I should have done more by now, considering my goal, but I've written half the script and designed the main character. So that's something, I guess.

Comic Jam Submission Thread Posted August 19th, 2011 in Art

Hello and welcome to the first ever (and possibly the last, depending on its success) Comic Jam!

A couple of weeks ago I posted a thread detailing the specifics of the comic jam, which can be seen here. But here's a brief rundown of the rules before I give you the theme:

The Lowdown

Your mission if you should choose to accept it is to create a narrative comic of preferably a number of pages within 3 days, ending on Sunday the 21st at 11:59pm EST. The comic can be any length you like and, while I'm tasking my self to draw a 24 page comic, you can choose any length you'd like.

You CAN work with a partner.

For more details on the rules please see the Information Thread.

How to submit

You can host the pages of your comic any way you like, be it in the art portal, in your NG dump, on a blog you have made especially. Anything.

But in submitting the comic to this thread, you must post the first page here using the 'Include Picture?' function, and have a link to the rest of the pages. Do not use more than one post.

Once the comic jam is done all of the comics will be collected into a single thread wherein people can offer their comments and critique.

Now without further ado:

The theme!

The theme for this Comic Jam is:

Night.

You can interpret that any way you please. The sky is indeed the limit. The night sky, specifically.

Remember: This thread is for submissions only! Do not post anything other than your final submission in this thread! For WIPs, and discussion please use the Information Thread!

Information Thread.

This is Jafariel.

She is an Elven princess turned thief-extraordinaire. She has a condition I like to call "Dinosociative Identity Disorder".

She carries with her nothing but the knives on her belt, and the clothes on her back.

She is in Foro village because she heard something interesting was going down, and is never one to miss a show.

Plus people don't often critique the art that is on here. People are constantly complaining about posting a large number of times with no one offering their opinion.

There's no problem with a forum forming cliques. That's what makes it a community, rather than a bunch of individual people.

The issue is with being elitist and hostile to newcomers.

A picture I did last night with a reference for inking practice. I got bored and didn't bother drawing the head.

Well it does mean I know to remind you just before it starts.

Anyway, two days to go. Start getting excited, everyone.

It's a game where almost all of the gameplay is walking around its world and seeing its sights. I think that Skyrim is the exact sort of game where graphics are important.

I'm not really a huge fan of Nomura's character designs of late.

I can't tell if you are serious about using that character and I forgot we were supposed to do that today huh?

I'm totally serious. Jafariel is the best character.

Also, today? When was that ever the case?

In what sense is that model a 'bombshell' or a 'stereotypical portrayal of beauty'?

She looks like a sleepless heroin addict.

You have no idea what you're talking about.

Instead of making these vague posts, why not set the people straight, TOAS?

Response to: Good comics to read? Posted August 14th, 2011 in Art

For webcomics with traditional comic page layouts I'd recommend Gunnerkrigg Court and Templar, Arizona. Neither of which are particularly action packed (though Gunnerkrigg Court does have SOME intermittent action) and they're definitely not violent, but they're both great webcomics.

The fact that the bottom of the desk and the cabinet don't line up with the floorboards should be an immediate clue that the perspective is off.

Due to a miscommunication of information, I ended up making a Comic Jam ad that was never going to be used for anything.

I might as well post it in here and advertise to the people in this thread.

Wanted to try drawing faster than usual, so I drew this Role Playing character I just made up in ~40 minutes (25 minutes for the line art. 15 minutes dicking around with colours before deciding I was bored).

Her name is Jafariel and she thinks she's a dinosaur.

Aigis? More like Artgis.
