At 10/13/09 07:57 PM, IOUPAIN wrote: Do most schools even looked at the PSAT when you apply?

PSAT scores themselves don't matter for college. However, doing well on the exam, and especially becoming a national merit scholar/finalist can be an important factor in selective college admissions, and can get you scholarships and even free-rides at other schools.

At 10/13/09 08:23 PM, OneWordName wrote: However, the difference between me and you is that I am more concerned with getting out of school three hours early, while you are concerned with the test itself. Silly boy.

This is exactly what I was thinking about when I took it, but in retrospect it would have been nice to have been a little more concerned about the test earlier on. I didn't start studying for the SAT until well into my junior year of high school, and even then I didn't work too hard at it. Although I like to brag I did well without ever worrying about the test, it would have been nicer to have done better with a little studying.

The main difference between the PSAT and the SAT is really the curve. Since there are less questions on the PSAT, getting even one or two wrong in a section drops your score very quickly (and with my tendency to make stupid mistakes, I fell victim to this). In difficulty, however, the SAT and PSAT seem pretty much the same.

2 = JStick

How can you see the user id with this new layout?

Use the old "View all reviews" link to find any user with a specific user id. This makes it easy to go from user Id --> Username

http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/readrev iew.php3?user_id=XXXX

Replace "XXXX" with a number to find the account. If the account doesn't exist, you'll be redirected to the Newgrounds home page.

How the hell do you view user IDs? I remember something about pictures, but not what you're supposed to do with them. Rats.

The only way to find the user id # of a user (and go from Username --> User id #) to my knowledge is to check the image url of that user's signature/profile picture/banner/etc; those contain the user's id #.

If you want to be a good math teacher, be like the person in these videos:

http://justmathtutoring.com/

Nothing but clear examples and explanations of topics. That site got me through calc BC. I'm also pretty sure nearly every single comment on his videos is something along the lines of, "wow, I wish my teacher was like you!" So be that teacher; you will be loved.

But on a completely unrelated note, I was wondering if you could offer any advice on moving from single-variable calculus to multi/linear algebra. Did you feel it was much more difficult to learn multivariable calc or linear algebra than single variable calculus?

I'm just wondering because I want to take at least one or two math classes at college, but I'm not so sure if it'd be wise to go right into the next level if I'm going to end up in over my head. I'm not a genius at math, but I did well enough in high school calc (5s on calc AB/BC), if that even means anything when it comes to math in college.

It doesn't if that grade doesn't appear on your high school transcript. Request a copy of your high school transcript or ask your guidance counselor and see if the grade is there. If it isn't, the college won't see it, regardless of the level of the class. Generally speaking, only 9th grade and up matters to college.

Social networking is going to disappear... because anyone can become famous? I don't follow your logic.

I do see social networking changing dramatically in the time span you've mention (5-10 years), but for it to disappear? No way. What would make people return to a less efficient system ("grassroots?"), especially with newer generations now growing up with social networking technology?

For example, do you plan on discarding your telephone so you have to send letters as well? Are you going to replace your car with a horse and carriage?

That's a little odd (unless I'm misunderstanding what you've written). Have you checked the track pad settings in the system preferences? Is the secondary (right click) currently set to the left or right hand corner?

I have been able to play all these flash games, all that I need to play, watch Youtube, and do everything great.

Topic: Why I chose Graphic Design.

Posted: 08/30/09 01:05 AM

Forum: General

Damn, same here, although I'm pursing graphic design as more of a hobby/side work for money rather than a major.

My foray into graphic design started similarly to yours: the first time I ever did anything "graphic design-ish" was when I made someone a sig in the ASM. Before that I was a huge sig whore here, going into various sig threads in general (when they were still around), grabbing as many freebies as I could. I didn't even end up using most of the sigs; I just wanted them.

Therefore, wanting to learn how to make these elusive sigs myself was a natural urge of mine. I went through every last tutorial I could find on Pixel2life, using a different one for each sig I would make in the ASM. The process was: Google an image, follow a tutorial to make a cool background, slap on the image, follow a tutorial to make some cool text, and post! I get better rather quickly, and didn't look back.

Eventually I was accepted into the SSM (reborn), and I made sigs there for a short time. That was my first real "accomplishment" in terms of graphic designing; I got to join as a member of an elite Internet thread. YES!

It didn't end there, however. Knowing my way around Photoshop was ridiculously useful for school, such as when doing "artsy" projects (I could and still can not draw, so using Photoshop worked perfectly).

In fact, I even entered a local science fair with a project regarding the uses of Photoshop in science and won first place in my category. I also joined my high school newspaper, become the layout editor, and made that shitty paper look like gold.

Graphic design = hell yes.

Got poison ivy bad back in fourth grade. I had gone hiking with parents a few and since the trail through the forest was oh-so boring, I decided running around on the hills through brush was much more fun.

Not a good idea.

I ended up with a very bad case of it all over my right arm and thigh. I still came to school because it's not infectious, but that shit was nasty. During recess I scratched my leg pretty raw and had huge oozing blisters all over my leg. Picture mini volcanos all over your leg--not fun.

And in class someone dropped a quarter so I picked it up for him with my right arm, which was covered with poison ivy. Needless to say I was allowed to keep the quarter. B)

Yeah, I've still got that competitive high school mentality where you feel the need to "beat" everyone and getting less than straight As is "bad." That'll probably die pretty quickly, but I guess it just takes time and the actual experience of college for it to happen.

Also you're gonna have to learn time management or you're not going to make it. I almost fucked up big my first year with that and I got my ass in line after that whole ordeal.

Indeed. It was getting pretty bad at the end of my senior year with 5 AM English papers and the like. I'm bad at setting studying routines, but I think I'll do better at college. Being less addicted to Newgrounds than before also helps.

But I'm curious; how did you "get your ass in line?" Did you set aside time for studying or cut out activities that were eating up study time? Or did you simply force yourself to study when you normally would not?

That's advice for you all too. Balance your school time and friends/social activities and you'll be alright.

Well that sounds easy. ;)

Yup. See this, for example:

Families with incomes up to $180,000 have an average expected parent contribution of 10% or less of their income

Schools like that generally give the most financial aid, and may be even cheaper than state schools (generally the most inexpensive other than community college) in some cases. If you get in, you're pretty much set; it's a myth only rich people go to those schools.

Anyway, I'm heading to college this fall and am happy to be done with the process. Every single college administration sucks >:(

Go on craigslist and search for jobs in your area. There are plenty of low-level part-time jobs that are posted there you may be able to get.

Also, contact all companies and organizations you're interested in and ask if they have could use you in any way. The worst you could get is a "no." And if you have any skills (programming, art, graphic design, etc), you can always freelance.

You should also look for volunteer work or unpaid internships, as you can still make connections by doing things like this, which can lead to a job later on.

As a last resort, you could try doing Cutco Knife selling, which is a little scammy (preying on your friends and family), but can be good if you're willing to work hard enough to make the money.

A human typed this post. This post, however, is a mere combination of pixels. Humanity on the Internet is therefore inhuman; only I, sitting here, exist. None of you are real; whatever you post gives only the illusion of real existence, represented by pixels. And as long as we never meet, then you shall remain as pixels in my mind, never existing, never being real. Solipsism is neat.

From the most recent newspost in 2007:

I'm gonna say that the project is currently on hold.
Graphics-wise, I'd say that the game is about 60-70% complete.

A project that's on hold won't have a set release date. However, it took approximately 4 years for about 60% of the graphics to be completed. Therefore it will take approximately 2.5 years for the rest of the graphics to be completed. Since no coding progress is mentioned, let's assume that it's at 0%. If coding takes the same amount of time as the graphics, then add another 6.5 years.

Therefore, if the project were to resume today, the expected completion date based on the project's progress so far is 2018. So check back then at the earliest to see.
