Rights don't exist. You have a sense of entitlement.

But in this grand time of ours, I guess anyone should get to live to if the person in power says it's okay.

Rights do exist. Natural rights are things which should not be taken away by any person or government - i.e. access to water. You could argue that "rights" go to those who hold power, such as in the case where a wolf could deny a deer the right to drink from a lake, but the way our government functions posits water delivery as a service, not as a permission through ownership. To that end, governments also do issue and revoke rights on a regular basis. It's not entitlement - it's good lawmaking. Entitlement would be if I said "everyone deserves free water bcoz it iz nature!!11"... Anyway, that's not the point - I could talk about rights for hours.

The government is, as you say, the person in power - and they say it's not okay to live (have water) if you don't pay your bills. The underlying issue is not a question of free water, but economic hardship and the perpetual posterity of poverty. In the video they talk of payment plans to pay down their accrued debt, but all they are doing is digging a deeper trench for themselves. People who are so poor that they cannot afford to pay their meager water bill are not in any position to bounce back from a payment plan.

Access to water is a basic natural right. Delivery of water is a service. I don't think it's fair to shut it off for one and not another, but if you violate the terms of water delivery service you are at fault and get what you deserve.

Response to: Processor vs video card Posted November 19th, 2014 in General

Alienware is a flaming pile of overpriced shit. Especially now that Dell bought the brand.

I always spend more on my video card because I use it more. As Ryder said before me.... Bottom line is what your PC is built for.

Only time a long distance relationship is worth it is if you'd already been together for several years. You're way too young to waste your life on the stress it brings. Follow your dreams. She'll understand. You'll meet someone else.

Response to: Forum Upgrades and Random Buttons! Posted November 17th, 2014 in NG News

Lovin' it. I always found Newgrounds charming for its simplicity, but it's got room to improve of course. These are great updates.

One thing I'd enjoy in the future would be better ways for browsing games. Maybe like a tag cloud or something (yes I know you can filter by tags, but I like to browse!).

From what I've seen of your other posts, I'm actually kind of impressed that you made a thread with some kind of valid expression of your thoughts, regardless of how misinformed they are.

Response to: Art review youtube channel Posted November 16th, 2014 in Art

I'm glad people are interested. Yeah, most of my work is online at zhon890.deviantart.com - I haven't posted anything really in a long time though. There is a traditional art section which is the most relevant to this.

I think I might make an introductory video too, showing each person and some of their art. Hmm. This could be much fun.

Response to: Have You Seen A Ghost? Posted November 16th, 2014 in General

According to my mom, when I was little I used to stand at the bottom of the stairs leading up to the attic and talk to a ghost named "Frank." He was a good ghost and he protected us from "the monsters." I only vaguely remember ever mentioning this Frank when I was a kid. Turns out, I had a recently deceased Uncle Frank.

I saw some really cute ghosts in the window decoration section at Walmart one time too. We have owls right now but they're just as cute.

Response to: is high school better? Posted November 16th, 2014 in General

School is never better. It's only different. What changes is your attitude. If you let yourself feel like shit you're going to feel like shit. Bottom line. All you really need to make it through is a friend or two, self respect, and knowledge of the fact that everyone around you is pretty much just a byproduct of bad social planning and negative sociological conditioning. Trying to "cope" or "fit in" with the scheme just propagates the problem and is about as effective as trying to join the boy's only treehouse club as a 5 year old. Even if you somehow make it in, you could be thrown out at any second for any reason. It's a pointless endeavor. None of it matters worth a damn when you get older anyway. Be yourself. Do your own thing. Make your own world.

Art review youtube channel Posted November 15th, 2014 in Art

So, I've had this idea for a long time and I want to know what people think.

I want to make a YouTube channel in which myself and my friends critique the art of people upon request and encourage discussion in the comments. I would keep it limited to 3 artworks max to keep the videos relatively short (thinking like 3-5 minutes each). The style would be something like the "Kids React" videos. Just with less jump cuts and more serious discourse. Or maybe we could just all sit around and have a discussion... I dunno. I'd have to play around with the idea a little.

Anyway, I graduated from a BFA program for fine art and still keep in touch with a few of my friends, just thought it would be a cool way to help people get feedback. Wouldn't just be NG artists of course. The roster looks something like this:

Me - mix of digital / traditional art, mostly drawing and printmaking with a weird blend of neo-classicism and anime background.
B - sarcastic old timer who is a god with an airbrush. Also highly academic in his studies and background.
J - stereotypical "art bum," he's got a really wacky taste. Mostly a printmaker.
S - basically a hippy with a paintbrush. Into psychedelic art, madly in love with Van Gogh, etc. Painting/printing/digital.
E - printmaking and drawing, loves making super polished pop-art-ish work with strong roots in graphic design. Quiet guy with lots of ideas.
A - illustrator, lover of comics, rocker, recently entered the realm of digital art.

Tell me what you think, what you would change/do to make the channel work, etc. I'm really interested in some feedback, been wanting to start some kind of channel for years now and this seems to be my best idea so far.

Response to: How do you stay focused? Posted November 15th, 2014 in General

Trying something new today... I set a long term reward of buying a bigfancything for finishing everything by the initial deadline, and a short term reward of playing some Age of Empires with my lady if I can up my production by 50%.

It also dawned on me that if I ever actually slept I might be more productive as well.

I'd share some of my own tips for productivity but they're clearly not working >:[

Bleargh. I have great reasons. The greatest I can think of, honestly, other than "if I don't do this I will be violently tortured until I die."

I blame my mother for not disciplining me enough as a child.

Problem is, I am already at that stage. I have an enormous project on my hands right now. For discussion's sake, let's say my overall goal is 650 units. I'm currently producing 15-25 per day, but I only have 15 days left. That is 375 out of 650 at best. I know I am physically capable of producing 50-80 units per day, which is the horribly frustrating part.

Also, I've gotten to the point where drinking coffee is doing nothing for me besides spiking my blood pressure like hell. -_-

How do you stay focused? Posted November 15th, 2014 in General

Lately I've been finding myself getting extremely sidetracked very easily. At most I can work for a half hour at a time before I have to get up and go do something. My productivity is absolutely awful. What do you do to keep yourself focused while you are working, studying, or otherwise doing something boring?

Only thing that has helped for me is to set a small goal. But that at best works half the time.

Response to: Very important question Posted November 14th, 2014 in General

My life is extremely busy, so when I find myself waiting for something out in public (a bus, appointment, line at the grocery store) I usually just relax and enjoy it. No activities, no thinking about things - just sitting still with a clear mind. It's a nice rare moment of respite from daily toil. I actually used to meditate pretty often, so I guess in a sense that's my meditation time now. Weird now that I think about it.

Can I see your sources? I would love to have some solid facts to throw at people the next time I see someone bitch about food stamps on Facebook.
But yeah. Ditto everyone else, it's a poorly designed system that is abused. People who are mad misdirect their anger. They should be bitching at the government, not at the recipients.

Response to: If males could only cum once... Posted November 11th, 2014 in General

Cloning would be a thing.
Mandatory sperm freezing too.
To the theory of 2 parents making only 1 child - consider that there is the possibility of twins or triplets, as well as using the same sperm sample for multiple eggs.
Rape would skyrocket. Prostitution would become legal. Age limit for legal consensual sex would all but disappear in time. It would become fashionable and even profitable to "save yourself" for traditional insemination. Several hundreds of thousands of people in various birth control industries would instantly lose their jobs.

My response will probably get drowned out by other replies, but that's a shame because my response will be the absolute best by a mile.

I've been picking out games for sister and wife for awhile. I know what chicks like. You didn't even need to list her likes/dislikes. They all fell fully into the exact assumptions I would have made solely based on her gender.

Here are some games she will love:

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons

On the list :)

Gone Home

Played it

Dear Esther

Played it

Unfinished Swan

Could be interesting. Will check this one out.

Journey
Flower

Looked into this one before, thought it was pretty interesting but she didn't seem to like it.

Mind: Path to Thalamus

This one looks great. Will check it out.

A Story About My Uncle

Interesting, but not for her. Too much platforming.

Limbo

Played it.

Thomas Was Alone

Don't think she'd be interested - too 2D platformy, looks more platform skill based than puzzle based.

Broken Age

Played it.

Botanicula

Not usually into point and click games but it looks awesome, may check this one out.

The Cave

Interesting - will check this one out.

Child of Light

This looks frickin awesome, but the turn based combat might turn her away from it. We'll see :)

Bioshock 1, 2, Infinite+Burial at Sea

Played, played, played it :)

You're welcome.

Wow, that was quite a good list. You were right haha. Thanks for all those!

Road Not Taken

This looks really cool, she likes Spryfox too so it could be a good one.

La-Mulana

Too 2D platformy.

The Escapists

This looks interesting too. Didn't think it'd be good at first, but seems really fun.

Crazy Taxi

Played it.

GT Legends

Racing games are usually a no, unless they're really unique.

Air Conflicts - Secret Wars

Doesn't like games focused on flying, especially flying combat.

Sentris

Seems interesting but definitely not for $20.

.

Whew! Thanks for all those suggestions. Got a pretty good list going now. I'll sort through these and post an updated list later. We'll probably go through the yes/maybes later this week.

Wow. Not where I expected this thread to go, but I must admit I am curious now.

What rituals do you have? Posted November 9th, 2014 in General

Not necessarily religious, of course. These are things you do every day or frequently that are beyond basic functions (so not things like going to school, eating dinner, etc., though a ritual could certainly involve one of these). Note that rituals are different from habits in that they are intentional.

Here are a few of mine...

Food: every time I make food, I turn on Netflix or Youtube on the PS3 and watch something. If I'm alone this is usually LoL tournaments, if I'm with my girlfriend it's usually Harshly Critical or whatever our latest Netflix escapade is (currently exposing her to Death Note).

Death: every time I have to kill something (bugs, rodents, etc.) I pause for a moment and apologize. Unless it's a fly. Goddamn nasty flies.

Computer: whenever I sit down to work, I always go through the same four links before doing anything - email, Facebook, Newgrounds, and manga updates. Despite the fact that I am aware of the update schedules for my manga and Newgrounds, and that I get email alerts on my phone.

Gifts: whenever I buy my girlfriend something as a surprise for a significant day (Christmas, birthday, anniversary, etc.) I give her small, unhelpful hints every day that only make sense after she has the present.
