I don't have this problem anywhere else.

Maybe you do but are just more aware of it here, due to some latent desire to appeal to this specific community in some positive fashion.

I'd also like to say that sometimes content isn't about what "you need", but rather what the creator feels like doing. If the guy wants to vlog and make gameplay videos, let 'em. Your safety and wellbeing are not dependent on the contents of the internet...

Response to: Good camera for Vlogging? Posted February 27th, 2014 in General

I bought my girlfriend a Canon EOS M for Christmas. It's a point-and-shoot that can operate like a DSLR and has an adapter that allows you to use DSLR lenses. Plus all Canon lenses are permanently interchangeable, meaning any lens you buy for this camera, you can use in the future. The EOS M is probably the most versatile camera I've ever seen. It's like $400 though so your call.

As the guy previous to me mentioned you will need more than just a camera to do proper video, but just a tripod is a good start. Most vloggers don't sit in a studio anyway.

Same reason smart people mock stupid people.

Same reason creative people mock boring people.

Same reason wealthy people mock poor people.

Everyone needs to feel special and superior about something. If those who are lacking do not know about your superiority, it means little to nothing. As was mentioned above, it's a sign of insecurity - kind of someone saying "look what I did! I am in shape!"

My other theory is that humans are just inherently horrible predatory creatures with no sense of compassion.

It's a habit that a lot of people seem to have, but I agree with you - it is incredibly frustrating for yourself. I don't think other people mind it that much, and I certainly don't when other people do it, but inserting useless words like that just makes me feel mentally encumbered or inept to some degree. I spent a semester in college striving to eliminate all of the useless utterances from my speech, only to have new ones form a few months later.

I find, however, that when I am in the midst of fury, I speak very straightforwardly and eloquently. I wonder why that is '_-

The problem with voting systems of any sort is that they are purely opinionated. You cannot expect the world to be fair and just when most of people's lives are run on opinion.

With that said, when you make content, especially on a site like this, you are making it to appeal to the users. At least, that's what you have to do to be successful. This isn't an artistic critique website. There will be people who fairly judge and review your work, but if that's all you are after, Newgrounds (or Youtube for that matter) is NOT the place for you.

Perhaps it is because I haven't developed the proper mindset for posting but I would still like to know if this is normal to anyone else and if they could give an approximate average of their time they take posting.

It largely depends on the topic. Most times I spend more time thinking than actually forming my post - which I do while browsing other pages or re-reading posts. Sometimes it's a few minutes, others I have taken a half of an hour to write up a few paragraphs.
I think if it is taking you 10-20 minutes to reply to a simple topic, I imagine it's because you spend too much time thinking and not enough time typing. I find that if you can read what you are thinking it helps a lot, so just start typing and re-arrange things as you go along. I do this when I am writing one of the aforementioned 30 minute posts.

It does suck that people are losing their jobs but it's a talented team and they will hopefully land on their feet. Man I feel like a dick saying that. But I'm looking at it from his perspective - having a 100 person team and the Bioshock franchise had to be killing him, especially if his heart wasn't in it anymore.

I believe that everyone should either do what they love or do what they have to. I imagine that this man is not struggling to feed his wife and children on a bare minimum budget, so he's free to do what makes him happy. If he continued working on Bioshock he would just be distracted by his true desire and produce subpar content. Plus he'd be depriving the world of a truly passionate creation. Especially in any facet of entertainment, doing something you are no longer interested in just for the money is a recipe for complete disaster - personally and financially.

As for the jobs: from my experience, the industry is a very flexible one. Perhaps some will find less success than they were enjoying with Bioshock, but it's not like closing a factory where hundreds of unskilled workers are left with no work and no opportunity to get work. These are skilled people who have an incredible resume thanks to their time working on the Bioshock franchise. They can continue to follow their dream while he follows his.

Response to: Question for portal voters Posted February 18th, 2014 in General

I always vote qualitatively. I give each submission its fair share of time and objectively consider all of its qualities. The only time I hand out a 5 is if I cannot think of anything to improve it. Generally if I am going to leave a review, I do that before voting - that helps me solidify my decision. I don't review often, but I try to whenever I watch or play something that I enjoy (especially if it could be improved).

I vote whenever I play a game or watch a movie. I rarely ever leave the page without voting - even if I have my points for the day already. It's just a simple, quick courtesy that makes people happy - certainly worth the ten seconds or so of deliberation. Sometimes I go through the most recent submissions to quickly get 5 points, while other times I spend some time looking for awesome gems that I missed in the past. I never really use the front page to discover things. I look at the flashes on it but I generally don't end up clicking on any of them.

For me, voting serves three purposes:
- Help others improve their work, or at least put a smile on their face
- Help other viewers find good content
- Get shiny experience points

I believe very strongly in the integrity of a vote-based quality control system.

What is an artist? Posted February 18th, 2014 in Art

This question comes up a lot in my life.

How do you distinguish an artist from an art-hobbyist or "just someone who likes to draw"? Is there a difference?

To me, anyone who creates art intentionally is an artist. It doesn't matter if you draw your OCs every now and then, or if you sell paintings for thousands of dollars every week. I don't see it as some high and mighty prestigious title reserved only for the fantastic few.

Thoughts?

It's not ignorant at all. Getting offended is a reaction that is conditioned through generations and generations of socialization. What offends one group of people could be completely fine with another group - it is all about what you learn growing up and how your beliefs are formed. The second you realize that your entire personality, morals, and state of being was crafted by the influences around you, you become armed with the ability to not give a flying colorful fuck about some stupid joke and take it for what it is.

Also trust me on this one - make an effort to REALLY learn the language before going over there if you are worried about fitting in. People from any culture love it when you can speak their language well and don't just sound like some ignorant tourist. I'ma list you anime that is all under 100 episodes. I hate getting into a huge series and never having time to finish it, so here are some shorter ones.

Ghost in the Shell - futuristic setting, secret strike force working behind the scenes to protect the country (and ultimately the world) from various threats. My favorite anime of all time.

Death Note - awesome anime focusing on mind games.

Hellsing - vampires, creepy sonsabitches, awesomeness. Kind of similar to Fullmetal Alchemist in some ways.

Burst Angel - slightly futuristic, another strike force anime. Has robots.

Elfen Lied - dark, gorey, depressing as all shit. Watch this if you want to cry and kill yourself.

Graphite - the next "oil"? Posted February 12th, 2014 in Politics

I recently took an interest in graphite and its position in the global and local (US) economy. I have been reading up on it and I have found a few interesting facts, but most of them don't matter. Basically what caught my attention was two things:

- Green energy relies heavily on graphite.
- Graphite is in rather short supply. There is less graphite in the world than a third of the amount of oil.

Now, when I say "short supply", understand that at the current rate the world's reserves of this mineral could last another 800 years. However, demand for graphite is expected to at least double in the next ten years due to its importance in green energy, and will likely begin to rise constantly after that.

So who gives a damn about graphite besides people who make pencils and brake pads?

First of all - graphite is cheaper, more efficient, less polluting and much safer to use in nuclear reactors than the current material. It can withstand 3600 degrees Celsius before even beginning to weaken. Meltdowns are almost completely impossible.
Second, graphite is heavily used in lithium ion batteries - the batteries that electric cars and many sources of green energy use to store power. Li-ion batteries use up to 20x more graphite than lithium. It is lighter, produces more energy, and takes up far less volume.

Do you think graphite's role in new energy is important enough to bring it to the same status that oil holds today? Will we be starting graphite wars in the next few decades?

If you wanna go with the Galaxy line, definitely wait a while. The S5 should be coming out really soon.
People are saying February 24th.
If you want further reassurance, just Google "Galaxy S5" and you'll see a few results about an event called Unpacked 5.

I personally like the 5S cause I think the Galaxy's the ugliest phone out there, but it does pack some good features, no doubt. But that's just me. I think it really depends on what you use your phone for.

This.

I've written a few articles on S4 vs iPhones and through my research I've found that it all just comes down to preference. The snapdragon quad core in the S4 is awesome for multitasking but the A7 chip in the iPhone is more powerful than it might seem from the specs. The difference in RAM isn't really noticeable either. Most people report that iOS is slightly faster in most scenarios, but not enough to really make a difference. So basically, do you prefer the Droid interface over iOS? And do you prefer Google Play over iTunes? That's all that matters in this comparison.

But again, the next Galaxy will probably make the iPhone look like a joke - until their next release of course.

Zombies are appealing in popular media because it allows for extreme violence against other humans with no moral backlash. In fact, it is glorified and praised. It is the ideal situation for the collectively frustrated society we live in. That's how I see it anyway.

Combine that with the lawless scenario of an apocalypse and you have the ultimate daydream.
I'm inclined to agree with you Zhon. It's like that movie The Purge. People are attracted to that lawless scenario in which they can shoot and stab and dismember one another without any fear of prison time.

It's actually kind of scary to think about. The implication of the success of these movies and shows is that deep down, people are so frustrated, they want to kill each other. I do think these moives and shows serve for the greater good. Just like GTA style video games, and first person shooters. They can actually experience murder without committing any crimes.

On the other hand, isn't that just perpetrating the violence? Stimulating the fantasies? By giving people a chance to engage in this behavior are we encouraging and desensitizing, or are we alleviating?

I'm on the fence, I don't really know. I enjoy this type of media as much as the next globally frustrated individual nonetheless.
