Yeah, the chick looks pretty awesome now...
I especially like the soft glow of the gubbins on the gun.

Response to: Tin Man concept Posted February 1st, 2008 in Art

I'm really sorry for double-posting, but another idea just came to me.

Metal tubes, pipes and hoses... For example, leading from his mask to some sort of gas-canister on his back... Or maybe tubes leading from his limbs to some sort of big, chunky artificial heart carried on his back....

He looks like he needs some sort of big, heavy piece of technology stuck onto his back...

Anyway, that's enough from me.... I'll shut up and let someone else speak now.

I hope you find some of these ideas useful. :D

Response to: Tin Man concept Posted February 1st, 2008 in Art

Hmm.
Maybe a vent-grille on the side of the mask, so that he can still talk through it...
And I'm sure that the metallic reverberation of the mask would give his voice a certain "metallic twang".

Maybe a few metal plates stitched to the skin? Or, if you don't want to go to that sort of extreme, some piercings would probably work just as good. (Nuts and bolts style piercings would look very nice.)

Grey eyes? (As in the iris), since the green doesn't add to the metallic feel.

Some rust clinging to his skin or other metal parts, like scabs... It would certainly add some more colour to the character.
Or maybe some rusty metal poking up from inside his skin like some sort of compound fracture...

Er... Tatoos of spanners, cogs, nuts and bolts? Or maybe angle-grinders and circular saws, if that's your thing.

Maybe make one of the lenses of his goggles some sort of telescopic image-enhancing device? (If you wanted to go for some hi-tech metal as well as the basic 'chunky' metallic appearance)

A swiss-army knife style robotic limb?(Something along the lines of the one that the cannibal dude from the Judge Dredd movie had. I know that his limbs aren't depicted in this picture, but I just thought it was worth suggesting while you were taking suggestions.)

One ear missing, replaced with a small ear-horn? (they look something like the horn/trumpet on top of really old gramophones.)

A hole in his cheek, which shows a metallic jaw and teeth inside his mouth?

Diver's boots? They're big, they're heavy, and they're made of metal.

A random vent somewhere on his body... Like on his temple, or his solar plexus.

A barcode? I know that it isn't necessarily a 'tin man' thing, but it's certainly along the lines of metal/machine....

Er.... That's all I can think of for now, but I'll maybe write some ideas down in my next class.

I find that a good way to remedy "bad balance" in a model is to superglue a penny, or a disc of Lead (Pb) to the bottom of the base.

That way, there's a little bit more weight there to steady the model a bit.

Failing that, get onto GW's mail-order bitz department and stick some metal gubbins to his back to steady him up a bit.

For some reason, it reminds me of that level in HL2 where you're going along the river in a boat...
There's kinda dilapidated buildings and stuff similar to the ones in the picture.

The character design wasn't inspired by Goldenthrone's "emperor of mankind in porta throne" was it?

Liking the cow though.
However, cows have no horns!

Cows actually do have horns - It's just that farmers usually scorch them out their "horn rings" at birth so that when the cow reaches adulthood, it's that little bit safer for the farmers....

If you look at the head of a cow, you can see the sort of knot on the top of their heads. This is a hard lump of bone which would normally have the horns growing out of it.

And if that's not enough to convince you.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cattle_deho rning

Anyway, the "hand cow" gave me a little giggle, particularly when I imagined what a "real one" would look like....

Response to: gman (half life) Posted January 28th, 2008 in General

The name "Gman" started as Black-ghetto slang for FBI agents.... It's short for "government man."
So really, it's got absolutely no bearing on Gordon Freeman's name whatsoever...

Really, I think that the Gman is the ultimate Enigma Code. (Forgive the technical term... It basically means that the mystery of the Gman will keep you coming back to replay the games, hoping to catch little details that might give away his identity, all the while, playing more HL games, in the hopes that he will eventually be unmasked....

Until the release of Halflife 2, many fans speculated that Gman was in fact the administrator of the Black Mesa institute, but HL2 explains that the administrator was in fact Doctor Breen.
However, it is known that he supplied the crystal sample that caused the resonance cascade at Black Mesa, which essentially started all this.... Keffuffle.

Anyway, that's just my two cents.

Personally, I don't think the Gman is human.... But I guess I'm not alone in that.
Response to: Mecha sketches! Posted January 28th, 2008 in Art

This is a mech that I threw together in the open-source 3D animation software, Blender.

I'll be perfectly honest - It was never meant to be 'pretty'. It was really just a background feature of an animation I did a few months back... But still, I like it and I'm postin' it up.... Even if it does look like a nazi-robot.

Pixellate it and put it in low-res and it'll look a lot more "8 bit"...

Response to: Nfleitd's (Hellpuppet) Thread Posted January 28th, 2008 in Art

I'll be prefectly honest - I preferred the pencil drawing of the chick...
The eyes had more expression in them, and the lines were more "emotive".

But then again, I'm biased... I prefer pencil drawings 99% of the time.

New pic!

I'm practicing human anatomy, at the moment, and this is the first sketch I came out with. I originally intended to put a caption on this and throw it into the 'propaganda collab - of victory' thread, but I kinda had some troubles with my home scanner. (Problem = the world's worst computer virus... Known as vista.)

I would appreciate any comments and crits on this picture to let me know where my anatomy slips up.
Thank you in advance.

I think that the "shading and highlights" are more caused by the "lamp" or "light" in the actual 3D CGI animation itself.
I.E. He's probably just showing us the model at the moment with a "sculpting light" which is not a very flattering light at all, but is only intended to let the CGI modeller see what he is doing while he works.

But I agree, overall. I would like to see these models with a slightly harder, more polarised light. (Switch on Raytrace, if you haven't already and your program supports it. Maybe move the light source to a position of elevation a little distance from the camera.)
That way, we will be able to see all the details you've put into these models and will be able to give more accurate comments.

But from what I see so far, these are very nicely done.

So long as I get credit for the image, and retain the Intellectual property of the character design, then sure, why not?

Really nice... I like your trailer. It's short, and to-the-point.

It's nice to see an animation which isn't totally revolved around comedy for once... It's refreshing to find something different.

And one little question - Where the hell can I get a copy of that soundtrack? I've looked all over the place for it, but I can't find it anywhere...

Although I'm not a big fan of abstract art, I can see the skill and time that went into your first pieces. I can see that you actually drew eyes, hands, small aeroplanes etc, which takes some skill to get right.
There are so many 'abstract artists' out there who just paint three lines, or maybe even a square and call it "Abstract Art."

Anyway, nice stuff. It's a shame you did them on lined paper, though...

very nice... The facial anatomy is slightly misproportioned, but you could probably pass that off as biodiversity variance...
But the anatomy of the chest is pretty skewed. The pectorals are too narrow, and the nipples are far too high and too close together...

But still, for a sphere-deform-head, it's actually very good. It's a hell of a lot better than all the heads I managed to make using that method...
