Working on an Icon for something I thought up in the middle of a conversation, it would largely contain only this and have heavy focus on backgrounds and colour - does the structure seem decent enough to begin?

Was supposed to be Character design but everything looks like trash so I've stopped trying and just draw people standin' around and shit.
Aaaand this horror WIP I started like, three days ago.
This is clearly the worse of the two.
So my attempts at gaining a sensei failed, so I'm gonna rely on the general populous informing me what to do.
I don't have any finished projects yet, but I do have some WIPs I'd like to improve, so I'm gonna post them here and I'd like you people to fucking annihilate them constructively.
Additionally, some base art practicy tips would be grand.

The problem is I have tried all of these things people are suggesting and none of them work, I feel like a proper authority figure looming around would help me be more productive.
I dunno, I'm strange as hell, but I feel like an apprenticeship-ish deal would help loads more than anything else.
