i know you can still do it with just using xmlsockets but i cant figer out how they work

I think you're confusing yourself. XML sockets are used to espablish a connection to a server.

I guess you could create a server to recive the data you want to save and then have it write the .xml file but that's a lot of work just to do something this simple. Not to mention the added costs of hosting the server.

There's no magic trick that makes Flash save data directly to a file.

It is not possible to write data to any file in AS2 except for local flash-cookies. This is restricted for security reasons. You can do some very limited things in AS3, but I suggest you use something else.

If you insist of having the "admin" interface in flash, you'll have to use some external script (like javascript) to extract the data from your .swf file and then write it to a file.

I personally use .php-based admin pages on my sites. That makes it very easy to read/write XML files.

The sound file I want to import is in WAV format and plays just fine in media player. This is happening often and at random times. Even if I convert the sound file into something else, Flash still refuses to accept it. Help?

Flash only supports sounds with a sample-rate of 11, 22, or 44 kHz. Usually Flash will attempt to convert the imported file to a supported sample-rate if it isn't already, but it doesn't always work. I suggest that you use some external sound editor to re-encode your .wav files before importing them to Flash.

As far as I know it has always been there. They just don't link to it from the main page anymore (which is why I put the link in my signature in the first place). Most likely to get people to buy the newer versions.

Sounds like a problem with your browser. Try turning off any download manager/accelerator software and try again. If it's still not working you could try the direct link:

I just took that screen shot... I linked directly to it earlier in this thread AND the link has been in my forum signature for over a year. I can't understand why clicking a link can be so difficult.

If you DO NOT get send to that page directly, you need to log in. Just like you need when downloading any other Adobe product.

Topic: do I need a storyboard?

Posted: 11/16/09 05:45 PM

Forum: Flash

If you're planning on ever doing serious animation or even professional work, you better start practising doing storyboards.

Keep in mind that your storyboard doesn't have to look like a detailed comic-book. It just needs to clearly show the angle of the shot, the (important) characters and/or (important) objects in the scene as well as indicate movement of anything in the shot and/or the camera itself.

Once you have your finished storyboard, creating an animatic is quite easy since all you really need to do is put your storyboard frames together and time them to fit your scene(s). I personally like adding some movement to some frames to better show camera movement.

Posted: 11/16/09 10:16 AM

Forum: Flash

There's no way to make it playable on all platforms AND keep the filesize down AND not require any kind of plugin/codec/program.

I suggest you export your movie as a .exe for Windows and a .App for Mac. That way you'll have one file for each of the major platforms which will be able to play without any special requrements.

A .swf file can be played on any computer with a web browser, regardless if they have the flash software or not. In Firefox for example go to:

File -> Open File, and you can select a .swf and it will play in the browser no problem.

So if you wanted everyone to be able to see it. Attach with your .swf file, an .exe (or dmg for mac users) of a firefox browser.

Unless I've totally missed something, wouldn't this work?

This will NOT work without the Flash browser plugin, it does however let you play .swf files locally without the standalone Flash player.

You could publish your movie as a .exe file. That should include all required decoding information. It will only work in Windows though.

Works fine for me. Try the direct link (you need to be logged in at Adobe.com):
http://trials.adobe.com/pub/esd/activati on/Flash8-en.exe
Even when signed in I get the same:

You will need to sign in and return to the location of your download. Your download will resume where you left off.

Even if I try to right click download target it's an html file. There's no longer an exe at that address.

Sounds like a problem with your browser... You get that if you try to download a file while not logged in. Make sure you have cookies enabled and turn off any download managers/accelerators.

Since you're offering your services as a game designer, you should show people some of your design documents instead of what seems like random sprites and outdated game engines. Especially since you, like you mentioned yourself, had other people do those for you.

I've studied game design for 3 years and I know how important the planning process is, so I can see people being interested in your services. If I were you, I'd focus less on displaying your artistic skills and more on showing your abilities as a designer.

Nope, money grabbing Adobe completely pulled it from the market, same as CS3 now.

Flash 8 is certainly the fastest and most stable version of flash, but good luck trying to find a copy!
