LOL, apologies. It was the best analogy I could think of.

But you're right; I know how overplayed the "rebel" angle is. Foamy plays it constantly. ;)

It's more than a movie to me, though; it's a cult (and not just his Card Cult thing). Foamy is a demagogue, he subverses 10s and Newgrounds awards out of his followers, and rejects all conflicting beliefs as "heresy" (or as he calls it, "shut up you fucking assholes").

Disagree with me as you like, but the review system was built so that you can offer constructive criticism on a per movie basis. You would need to cite examples and there are several tangents you go off on unrelated to the movie. You've just admitted anyway that you copy paste it everytime you see one of his movies.

My review is more constructive than most reviews Foamy movies get. At least I'm not offering blind praise or tepid annoyance. :p

Yes you are entitled to your opinion. And certainly you make a few valid points on the series, but I also disagree at other points. I don't want to get into an argument about foamy, but you should keep your soapbox speeches where they belong. Your reviews don't offer any means to improve the series, not specifically and as they are unrelated to the actual movie, just leave it hear in this topic.

Revolutions aren't made in the spaces where we're "allowed" to say what's on our minds. They're said in the faces of our oppressors. The American Revolution was not won by the Founding Fathers sitting around agreeing with each other.

Atleast foamy is a little bit original.
Talking squirrel? I've never seen that before, have you?

Maybe he does ride on our angst, but who cares, if people like him why are you trying to shut him down?

Foamy's not random, he's perfectly grounded, and at least stays focused on hate. Too focused, in fact; gratuitous cursing, complaining about things that everyone finds annoying and playing off random sex jokes doesn't exactly push the envelope.

And I've seen talking rodents before. Mickey Mouse dates back to nearly the beginning of the 20th century! Taking a talking rodent and making him angry isn't especially inventive. And I'm trying to shut him down because I don't think people actually "enjoy" him, they just enjoy seeing him. Doesn't matter if it's even for two seconds, Foamy = perfect. He's too overrated, and I think it's doing damage.

Foamy is desperately derivative and it's knee-jerk popularity undermines the efforts of new Newgrounds artists and people that work hard, and I think people should recognize how banal it is and what a danger it is to creative integrity on Newgrounds.

Questioning

Topic: A Request for Opinion: Foamy

Posted: 04/09/08 10:56 PM

Forum: General

Over the last while, I've posted a "form letter" review in several Neurotically Yours movies to express my opinion of the series as a whole. A user named MaxtotheMax has requested that I state my opinion of Foamy in the Newgrounds BBS, since I'm not actually "reviewing the movie" and it belongs here in a public forum rather than a space for critical analysis. The "critical analysis" of the Foamy movies that I've seen have just been 10/10 reviews that beg Foamy to "never change" or 0/10 reviews that call for Foamy's death, so the actual judgment of Foamy's films are quite irrelevant (and abusive, according to the rules. :p). I maintain that I'd rather post them as movie reviews so that it can be seen on the front lines, where the problems are at their worst and things can be changed, but I'll post one of the reviews here at his request:

You all either vote ten on it because your preteen angst results in a knee-jerk delusion to think this movie is genius because it has a character bellyaching about things you'd like to bellyache about but don't have the audience or arrogance to do so, or you vote zero on it because it's seen as a monotonous drone repeated ad-nauseum for the benefit of the aforementioned bleating mascara-drenched sheep that think it's perfect because they love anything that hates everything. I fear the creator has either made like he has an obligation to appeal to this rabbling mass, or he understands that no effort is expected of him, just make Foamy say mean things.

Another return of Foamy's spastic rants, Jonathan Ian Mathers calls upon his reliable Mary Sue to spout his uninformed, curse-riddled misanthropy. If he stood in the middle of road and carried on about killing babies, he'd be committed, but since now he's a squirrel on the web, he's cheered for infanticide fantasies that don't express anything, because it's Foamy. For eight years, these movies have been all the same, a note held indefinitely in a song that was loud and rebellious, and caused a great scream from the rabble. The song was alright at the beginning, but many of us are getting bored of that note, and wish that the guy would get onto the next verse. It's called insightful and expressive, but it's simply pointing and laughing. You all see him as a voice for counterculture, mocking the preppies and bolstering your hip rage and contempt, but when you see a disclaimer asking you to not be offended, you should see that illwillpress has abandoned that ideal to get those preppies to buy t-shirts.

Decent creative work needs content, not just attitude. Well-made movies deserving of high praise like Brackenwood and Ola Bergner are forced to share the limelight with this exhaustive, minimalist fluff, it makes me shudder for the creative direction of Newgrounds. I don't object to limited animation, but i object fiercely to limited idea. Invader Zim was a cartoon with similarly misanthropic subject matter, but it at least had a clever, expansive idea that it could build off of and play with; this is one character doing one thing that can't be built on. You people praise these movies for their spontaneity and quick wit, but you can train anyone to do anything by impulse if he does it exactly the same way for nearly a decade. Look up Ivan Pavlov if you don't believe me.

Calling various things in society and media "bullshit" is not sharp improv; its simple-minded rage. Any one of you talks like this in your head in your daily life, and you think that if it comes out of your mouth, suddenly you're an artist? Putting some kind of imaginative spin on it is where true creativity lies; illwillpress has skipped that step for a quick Daily First.

What else is funny is if I were to make a movie like this, with an angry character of some fantastic feature (ie making him an alien or an animal), a small supporting cast to egg him on, and if I put some kind of twist on it like, say, they all live on the moon or one of them is an assassin for hire, something that can actually formulate some interesting drama to voice my beliefs in a way that would stand out, you'd all say I'm ripping off Foamy, poorly at that. illwillpress has so successfully hijacked your tastes that he could make a movie where Foamy waves his testicles in your face for ten minutes and it would still seem brilliant because it had that preloader on it.

But I'm an optimist. Though these movies will continue to garner blind praise from people with a shallow contempt for the norm, I like to think doing this for so long is rotting Jonathan Ian Mathers from the inside. He once had a good idea that consumed him. Eventually, he might try for ambition and really see the joy of exerting himself (more so than just making semen jokes), if he's not a pandering shill just out to stuff shelves at Hot Topic.

As for this movie, read what I wrote. It's a review of NY as a whole, I hope you at least dignify my efforts by thinking about it.

He drew chintzy animation to go with the dumb things gamer slackers say when the TV is muted and they dub over the characters with goofy cuss words, and everyone thought this was furiously inventive and amazing, even though they probably do it too, and now he has the internet wrapped around his little finger.

I've been reading this webcomic for a bit, and I've come to realize that its entire purpose boils down to this: "WE HAVE BREASTS!!"

Goodness gracious, it depresses me that so few stories and such really try and spice up their initial concept, and how many just use different words to say the same thing. For instance, that TV show "Big Brother": "WE'RE BEING WATCHED AND WE'RE ALL WEIRD!" Or this new newspaper comic called "Secret Asian Man": "I AM ASIAN-AMERICAN!". Or Neurotically Yours, which alternates between "I'M AN ANGRY SQUIRREL!" and "I'M A GOTH GIRL WHO IS THE BUTT OF A TON OF SEX JOKES!"

How many other things do you know of that like to play the same joke repeatedly, and how would you describe that joke? And conversely, what are some things that you like how varied they try to be?

At 8/8/07 02:46 PM, robattle wrote:
Foamy's Dick Must Taste Really Good.
You must be gay to say something like that.

Let us observe the structure of this sentence: "Foamy's dick must taste really good." "Must" is a predicate that the condition of the subject is most likely true given other evidence, in this case being how many people are sucking Foamy's dick, but is unknown as fact because it only describes logical certainly, not factual certainly. If I had, in fact, sucked his dick personally, I would say "Foamy's dick tastes really good", because this conclusion would be made factually rather than logically, and a predicate indicating the logical relation of the subject to the object.

At 8/8/07 02:49 PM, WooldoorSockbat wrote: Yeah it wasn't that good, I did laugh once but meh. Poor Foamy he lost it long ago.

The "genitals in the ice cream" joke was funny in kind of an absurd sort of way. And in fact, what would be an answer to a question as stupid as "Hot enough for you?" He's not trying to figure out if the day is reaching some kind of heat standard you have, he's just taking a pointless jab at the weather. I hope he didn't hurt nature's feelings. :p

What Foamy seems to boil down to, though, is angry, cyclical tirades that only repeat what you already know, teasy sex jokes that are constructed to stretch censorship guidelines to the breaking point, and thick countercultural makeup for that one last stab at the identity-crisis-ridden masses. I wonder how Foamy fans would react if it suddenly had the nerve to develop a unique sense of style to it...
