I think the better question is who cares? Nu-metal is dumb, nu-metal fans are dumb, true metal rules. End of story.

I've been over this topic so many times I really can't bother to go on much longer... In short:

Disturbed = Hard Rock

Nü Metal = Rap Hard Rock

Disturbed = NOT Nü Metal

Nü Metal = Not Metal = Not to be discussed here.

Hard Rock = Not Metal = Not to be discussed here.

Any questions?

Ehem... according to Metal Archives, it is! Surprised me as well.
Does it actually say Smoke On The Water is a metal song, or does it just list Deep Purple because they have done metal?

It lists 95 recordings of the song, mostly by Deep Purple. I made a search on the song name.

Ahem... *trying to steer the conversation off the flamewars*

Have any OTHER than Finns here heard about Lordi? They're a monster- heavy- metal (they ARE on Metal Archives) band from Finland, who made their way to the Eurovision. Now half of the people are trying to ban their entry because they're "Satan-worshipping-demons". These people really don't know what they're talking about, since one of the biggest hits of the band is called "Devil Is A Loser"...

Anyhow, what are your thoughts about judging the book by its cover, AND calling an Eurovision- band metal(is it believeable in your opinion?)

I agree on that, BUT...

i don't like slipknot,but i don't go around saying it's not metal.of course it's metal,it's heavy,and it's ballsier than rock music,the vocals are heavy,so i'm sure that would be a style of heavy/thrash/alternative metal,not ''poser rock''.

There you're wrong. Slipknot DOES have HipHop- elements, such as turntables. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with Nû-metal, since I even listen to Slipknot at times.

For fucks sake,it's fags like you that are bringing the metal genre down.If anything,I wouldn't call bullshit music like Immortal and Cradle of Filth metal. That crap is the stupidest shit i've ever seen.Half of their fuckin career is just posing with cum paint on their face, then posing for 1000 more pictures holding shitty fake weapons and crappy clothes covered in spikes. Then they just bitch about christians and how much they suck and how they want to burn down churches, then bitch about death, then make a shitty record about winter, then another shitty record about winter. Then they do more posing with cum paint on their face.

I see what you're talking about. Still, we should let them exercise their own style, just as they should excuse mainstream metal.

That isn't metal, thats a fuckin bullshit excuse for a genre of music.

. . . You're being a bit hypocritical here, aren't you? Because that's exactly what you don't want people to say about In Flames, Metallica, etc...

Get that through your fuckin head. And don't bother arguing because i'm not ever coming back to this thread again, let alone posting in it.

Some news considering my musical career...(haahaahaa!)

I'm starting to handle some pretty challenging pieces. Challenging for my voice, anyway.
I've extended my register alot this past year. Now I can pretty easily do Sonata Arctica's Broken , the song I had really much trouble with some time ago! Still, there are some pretty high notes I must get working by the end of this month, since those are needed in a couple of sings we're gonna play with my band. I guess I should ask some help from my music teacher for those really high notes... any advise you might wanna share?

And just to let you know, I've got a basic list of what we're gonna play out there:

WARNING! The following contains strong mainstream innuendos, which some elitist migh find offensive! ;) Viewer disctretion is advised.

Deep Purple - Black Night
Deep Purple - Perfect Strangers
Deep Purple - Smoke On The Water
Disturbed - Believe(damn high notes here!)
Disturbed - Voices
Metallica - Enter Sandman
Metallica - Orion
Opeth - In My Time Of Need
Porcupine Tree - Blackest Eyes
Porcupine Tree - Open Car
Rush - A Passage To Bangkok

The list would contain some Dream Theater IF we had some more strings in our instruments... :'( Still, I'm pretty happy with our band at the moment. We get to play most of the stuff we like, and that's what matters. Does anyone have any recommendations of what we could play seeing the current playlist? I know it's all pretty tame but I'm not a poser, and neither is anyone in the band. ;)

Metal+Rap = shit

they don't mix, it ends up being rapcore bullshit like Disturbed..

....
I should keep my mouth shut about this one...

...too late! I agree on Limp Bizkit being a total poser wannabe-negro-band, plus their vocals mostly make me laugh for their sound.

BUT

Disturbed is not rapcore. There's nothing rapcore in that band anymore. The vocalist sings. There's no turntable-effect. There's no gangsta-clothing. There are no black members. There's no rap-message whatsoever(whatever that's supposed to be).
I agree, the first album had something rap-like, but after that the vocalist took some
singing lessons and even did a ballad on the second album! The point is: They've matured in sound alot and therefore don't deserve the "rapcore bullshit"- label.
(and you don't have to tell me they're not metal, I know it already)

I'm so sorry everyone, but although this IS Metal Hell, we shouldn't predjudise other genres blindly, since that's what metal itself has been suffering from so long: Bad name, for no reason other than something called "popular belief".

I'm so going to get it now... -_-' Oh well...

Hello everyone. If I recall correctly, I was allowed in some time ago, but haven't really been posting, mainly for the lack of things to say.

Anyways, I have a band called Misguided, which has gone through some changes lately. First of all, we used to have two guitarists, but yesterday we kicked out one of them for his lack of motivation and inability to compromise OR train the same songs others did. So he parted ways with us, and now we will do our first two live gigs with only one guitarist. Not that we NEEDED more, it's just a much more fuller and richer sound with two guitars.

In the news regarding Misguided also: The training on TWO DISTURBED SONGS nearly affirmed! We first decided to train and play "Prayer", but our ex-guitarist just trained some AC/DC and didn't show up to rehearsals(he was skiing), while our other, more skilled guitarist had to study for an examn and had accidentally trained "Believe" in its full. Now, we are still going to keep Prayer on our playlist AND add Believe there as well, if I believe my vocals are up to the task, since Believe is quite a high-note song to sing.

On a side note, I love Disturbed's vocals! No screaming, only a little groaning(which can be passed if needed, since it's only there to give atmosphere) and still very powerful singing.

What's up here? Anybody dead? Anybody with a courtcase? Anyone at all?
I feel like talking weird things now so I'll just pass on this box of muffins. Here, have some.

Why everybody here hate SlipKnoT?

Because they're supposed to. It's a very "cool" thing to do and no-one want's to be different from the others. It's called group behavior, which is usually seen among sub-cultures as well as masses(see 'teens'). If you can't fit the bill, others will instantly see you as an inferior being. Hating Slipknot is a part of being a true metal head, thus, gaining an equal position in the group. This is how any other person would see it. As for me, being yet another sheep in the herd, I must say it's because they're not metal, their music sucks and they've got smelly feet. ^^

I'm sorry for double posting, but...
Since joining Metal Hell I've been trying to find out "what metal is"... And why certain bands (you all know what bands *coughslpkntetc.cough*) are not classified as metal even though they have the message and heaviness in their music. Now I think I've come across one idea I could very well agree with. This was taken from another topic, but the poster never mentioned the source, so I have really no way of knowing if it's originally from Metal Hell itself:

METAL:

"Metal is best defined by it's use of complex guitars. It can range greatly, bands with heavier bass/drums are usualy considered heavy metal, stuff with dual guitars at a fast pace is grindcore, etc. etc.

This is the reason why bands like Slipknot are NOT metal. Jim plays several chords, but only in a few songs does he change. This isn't to say he's a bad guitarist, it's just to say that's all the songs call for. Mick is just 'noise' guitar, if you've seen them in concert you'll know he plays very little variations. Yet, Chris and Shawn both play their custom precussion, along with Joey's drum, which gives SK a very heavy, primal sound. Few bands achieve this sound, and Slipknot is very hard to categorize because of this, but a general name for it would be just plain ole hard rock.

Bands like Nightwish use the complex guitars, mixed with classical vocals and a VERY skilled keyboardist xHe is one of the nastiest out there, if you know anything about keyboards) to do much like slipknot do, and give themselves their own unique sound. But, because the basic feel is that of a fairly fast paced, complex guitarist, it can be generaly categorized as metal.

The key to categorizing bands is breaking down their formula. You find what the center of the band is, what the supporting pieces are, vocals, etc, then look at the band. Korn is in no way metal, because of the expansive bass lines they use, Disturbed focuses heavily on it's vocalist and the rest of the band uses a basic heavy rock sound to support it." -Not by me.

So there. I think this might have some truth to it, don't you? As I'm sure everyone already knows , I'm a huge fan of Disturbed and had some trouble understanding the weird quircks of categorizing hard/heavy music. Now my tormented soul might finally find some peace...

....okay.. go on and dump this theory... If you can...

About Rammstein, I like them. That might not say too much considering my taste in general but still, I like them. They're funny and if I spoke German I'd surely sing along...^^ This weird thing just happened last night. TV was on. There was nothing good on so I started surfing the channels(too bad Finland only has about 5 channels plus global ones) and then I hit MTV. They were showing this show "The Most Awesomely Bad Metal Songs Ever". Now, the title is bad as it is but then there were the commentators! Most people were comedian/writers and useless actors commenting on what real metal is. All they had to say was "That's not metal! Metal is carnage/satan worshipping/drugs!" And the next thing they said was "you can't say that in a song!"

Hearing this arose the big question again. What IS metal? In my opinion, metal is HONEST above all things. That means acting all "Boohoo I'm so sad because mom didn't buy me that cellphone!!1!one" is not metal, since it's overdoing. On the other hand I have hard time believing bands who propose to be all EVIL, inhuman and against everything. If that was true then wouldn't they be killing everyone outside instead of giving interviews and making record deals? My opinion of metal is music that gives the listener something to think about, be it heavy or calm(Opeth) by sound.
Singing about love can be metal (contrary to several opinions I've heard) because it's a real thing that affects people in many ways. It can give you misery, happiness, disappointments or feelings of vengeage. The thing is not overdoing it, but being honest. What are your thoughts?

You were talking about the histories of your music tastes here? I just might enlighten you about my dark past...
Well, it all started when I was born. Then, for a couple of years nothing happened. My parents were a little worried for me barely talking when I should've been babbling all the time using some kind of baby lingon. They were about to crash into a tree once I finally, on the backseat of our car, opened my mouth and started SINGING! And so my musical tale began! My childhood just went by listening to Abba, parody/comedy songs and Elvis. Not too metallic. I was repelled from metal music for a long time because the first kind I heard as a child was some kind of groaning/shouting stuff which I got scared of. Well, years passed and I was at the 7th grade, I think, when I started watching MTV at school. That's how I got into mainstream pop music in a way. I was introduced to Gorillaz, The Offspring, Linkin Park and other bands like that. I'd say the strong conservative musical influence of my parents was a big reason for my late awakening to other music. At this point I also loved the soundtracks of movies and videogames. Later on I got a friend who gave me some Disturbed and System of a Down, which still remain as my favourites. Through those bands I got more interested towards metal in different forms, and I could say it was a bit of a shock to hear neither of them was considered real metal by metalheads... By now I still listen to everything mentioned above, since I was honest to myself and listened to the music I liked, not the music that was pop at the time. I still remember why I liked each genre and enjoy all kinds almost as much. At the moment I'm looking into two things, REAL metal and progressive rock/metal the most.

So, I hope you have some understanding for my weird taste now... or then not...^^'

AHEM! *builds up his battle-aura* Did someone mock my homecountry here?! Glad to hear that's not your personal opinion, since it's mostly false and misleading information. For example, I happen to know several attractive girls just from my school alone! >:(

As for having values, I believe values are made by people to make living easier and being honest and true to yourself and others is a value in itself. I hate people who pretend to be better than they really are and judge others for being honest. That's also what I think about Bush. He starts wars saying God told him to... I wonder, is he any better than the terrorists, mixing religion with politics?

And as for metal, IMO, the different subgenres with different believes are there for a reason, and that is expressing yourself and your believes. I'm really not into the rape-your-dog-with-a-firehose- stuff, because I don't believe it. The only time I like it is when it's for fun. I love Bloodhound Gang because they have some really extreme fun lyrics which I can enjoy without telling people to masturbate to missing children! I getting carried away here... a-friggin-gain! But at least I tried to bring my POV to daylight... not sure if anyone understood, though...
