big-jonny-13: see, you grow big and strong if you drink your milk.

PixelCake: +1 stalker! haha, don't be a stranger, i'd love to hear your feedback if you have some. glad you liked dexter.

Spaghetti14: thanks for the compliment! yeah, send me some of your studies of that stuff if you want me to look them over and give you tips.

anyway, just doing some layouts right now for the next cartoon. i made an animatic (where i time out the storyboards to my music and SFX and voices and stuff) that you can see REALLY faintly underneith. now i'm taking those loose drawings and tightening them up using perspective (you can see my grid). i'm gonna take these into photoshop to ink them up, then this program called art rage to color them and get cool paint textures. more progress to come (maybe more layouts if you guys would care to see 'em).

TehSlapHappy: Volumetric drawing is all about construction. There is a great and super cheap Walter Foster "Beginner's Perspective" book. The "beginner" nomenclature is sure misleading, because this is stuff that even the masters still struggle with. You can get it here: http://www.walterfoster.com/books-kits/d rawing/2/Beginners-Guide-Perspective/HT2 9.html or check out your local Michael's or Aaron Brother's or something. USE THESE TOOLS.

Also, for characters, the best resource is Preston Blair. It's here in it's entirety for FREE:
http://www.animationarchive.org/2006/05/
media-preston-blairs-animation-first.htm l

and
http://www.animationarchive.org/2006/05/
media-preston-blairs-animation-1st.html

Go through the steps Preston shows you. Draw basic shapes, then wrap lines arond the form to guide you to build forms on top of the initial ones. I would try tracing some of the basic heads, then free form copying them. The more you do this, then apply it to your own artwork, the more you'll learn to draw solid. Start with basic shapes in space, then build on top!

If you want to send me drawings to critique, jsut message me and I'll help where I can.

Anyway, still working on animatics. Sorry, not too many doodles to share these days. I need to buy more royalty free music for one animatic so that's kinda holding up the process a bit. Maybe when I finish the animatic, I'll post up a preview to show you guys how I work out that step of my film. I work super rough, just to get the timing and feeling right.

big-jonny-13: it says "big-jonny-13 will never know!"

TehSlapHappy: hey man, what particularly are you looking to learn? i'd love to give a tutorial! are you interested in how i ink the lines? how i do the ink washes? or how to draw volumetric in perspective? i'd love to do a series for you to show you what i'm doing. for my next comic, i'll photograph all the steps.

MeMB: dude, that would be AWESOME to get syndicated. right now, a lot of my comics are too edgy for newspapers (which hopefully means they'll actually be funny rather than Luanne. jesus, 99% of newspaper comics are a bore). we're planning on launching a site and updating comics every monday, wednesday, and friday, so it'll be like we're syndicating ourselves... if that counts. if i could pull something like perry bible fellowship adn get picked up by places, that'd be a dream.

sorry no art this time. been working on animatics and more comics stuff. i should have some new doodles up tomorrow or after the weekend tho!

fishboy121: thanks man, i really appreciate the positive feedback. hopefully i'm doing something right. if you ever want critique of your work or anything, feel free to message me. i'd love to share my tips and tricks for art.

idiot-monarch: HAHAHAHAHAHHAHA oh god, i'm kicking myself so hard right now for not puttig in a waldo in this comic. DAMMIT! where were you weeks ago? i love you hahahahahha

J-qb: hahahaha, he's behind the giraffe.

Dexter3000: maybe he got a haircut and a change of clothes.

ArthurGhostly: thanks man! i try to focus on character so i'm glad that shows

been looking at a lot of charles addams, ronald searle, and uli meyer ( http://umbackagain.blogspot.com ) lately. trying to get outta my comfort zone of just outlining stuff. looking to do some wash work. anyway, trying to get a lot looser.

Dexter3000: If you work hard enough, you'll be at least as good as me and hopefully even better!

Bird-Man: How could I forget?! Hahaha, you rule dude.

Just some design work for my next film. Girls are hard to draw, so to animate them is gonna be some real cold cheese. Gotta practice up before I gotta perform.

Response to: Toon Hole. Posted July 30th, 2009 in Art

bl00db47h: what a wonderful compliment! you rule! you can totally accomplish anything you set your mind to, so i'm sure if you practiced enough you could draw like this

another comic teaser. i was really breathing hard after i finished inking this one. i'm scanning a bunhc of comics right now into the computer. anybody care to see some more teasers?

Toon Hole.

Response to: Toon Hole. Posted July 24th, 2009 in Art

Yeah, that's a good idea. My time is put all into films and comics tho. I should take a couple hours to look at the art portal and figure out how I can participate tho. Good heads up.

it was my buddy hayden's birthday so i drew him a flyer.

also, check out the HD screengrab of my short on my blog. if i posted it here, it would just get compressed and it'd defeat the purpose of high quality screen grab:

sakerfalcon: awesome! old cartoons rule. it would be sweet if i can successfully get that vibe.

test-object: thanks man, you rule. i'm rushing to make more good cartoons for you!

thanks for all the encouraging words guys. sitting in your room by yourself working long hours isn't the most glamorous shit, but your guys' support makes it all worth it. coloring the next short! then compositing (UGH).

lots more previews to come!

anyway, here's a painted BG from the next cartoon.

Toon Hole.

Response to: Toon Hole. Posted June 13th, 2009 in Art

idiot-monarch: wow, great question dude. i guess it's the fact that i like old animation a lot. there's so much life to looney tunes/old disney/fleischer cartoons and that's something i'd like to bring back. every frame was inked and carefully painted and it really has that human touch. that's something most people lose with flash by just tweening symbols around. the old stuff looks a little earthier and a little more raw. i guess a good example would be comparing rock and roll of the 60's using analog recording technologies (like Hendrix) to more standard contemporary practices of digital correction and ultra production (Jonas Brothers). I guess that's not really a fair comparison, but still.

i'm taking my stuff into After Effects to add film grain. i also duplicate the character layer, gaussian blur it, and put it at 40%-60% opacity. this is meant to replicate the effect of old CELS under the camera (its' a theory of the great artist nick cross that light gets refracted and spread in the thin layer of plastic: http://pyatyletka.blogspot.com/ ). also, most of my backgrounds will be painted. for this film, i really just wanted to create something quick so i did my BG's in flash, but for other films i'd like to maintain that standard of quality of something painted, or at least faux-painted (textured).

you know, i care about this stuff but we'll see if other people care when i release stuff.

here's a hack title card not for this short but for another one starring the drunk frog.

Memb: Thanks!

idiot-monarch: I'm having some troubles exporting .swf's into after effects. for some reason, the stuff outside of the stage is getting cut off in AE. i drew bigger than the stage so that i could do a pan. eep! gotta figure it out.

anyway, last screen before it's released probably.

Blue Hippo: Sweet dude. Thanks for followin.

Big J: DRUUUUNJK

Going through some flash export problems to get into After Effects. Gotta do some shit to make it look less like flash in AE. Ack, anyway, another screenie.

i still can't believe you can't embed flash movies into the forums. i mean, isn't this newgrounds?!?! or is there something i'm completely missing?!

check it:

trying to finish this during this week. but i'm sick at hte same time

Response to: Toon Hole. Posted May 26th, 2009 in Art

Thanks Idiot-Monarch! You'd think these classic characters would be pretty simple to draw, but they're old fashioned SOLID drawing. The construction is tricky to get it right and on model. Now I know why so much stuff is flat and sharp these days; it's much easier to draw cheats for it!

Cowboy doodles for a comic.

Toon Hole.

Response to: Toon Hole. Posted May 21st, 2009 in Art

man, this guy looks deceptively simple. lots of cheats (ears always in same position and don't rotate in space, the muzzle is often cheated as well as the nose, etc.)

sorry for the boring posts, but i've been trying to get my drawings more solid lately so it's what i've been doing. might have an animation preview thing soon finally for you folks

big-jonny13: hey dude, for a while it's just gonna be gag films. a lot are just one or two minutes long. i have animatics for longer cartoons (5 minutes) but those are gonna take FOREVER to finish. so don't except too much on teh story end... YET. i'll bring it someday, hopefully. but for right now, squishy squashy animation and silly visual gags!

zoidz: thanks! i'm super influenced by ren and stimpy and the artists that worked on it (vincent waller,
jim smith, bob camp, bill wray specifically more than john k himself). that's an awesome compliment.

couple of lunch doodles between boarding a short idea with a pal and comic ideas.

big-jonny-13: thanks for the kind words. hopefully you won't be disappointed when the deck gets laid out on the table. did i say deck as in deck of cards? i meant dick.

idocreating: haha, yeah. that guy has a similar aesthetic to me. i watched that film. old school cartoony!

cap'n ben: job might be pretty temporary. and hopefully i can make my own cartoons my job in the future. here's to dreaming!

just some doodles posing out a short guy. one of the characters for a film i'd like to do, but probably won't get to do it for years.
