Lemmiwinks91: yeah, Doc Martin's ink (cuz it's matte, and lots of inks say they're waterproof but really aren't), cheap student grade watercolors, and acrylics for my kicker lights. in order for the kick lights to really pop, you gotta color hte rest of the portrait really DARK, so the light pops.

big-j: you're my head of marketing.

anyway, toonhole pal kramer made this penis worksheet that he wanted me to share with y'all. i got more portraits coming down the pipes to post soon too

great piece, man. just my input on how to make it more solid/put it in correct perspective. even if her eye is messed up, it's still outta place (unless her eyesocket was melted or something wild like that).

A Little Suggestion?

Creative mask use with the Pacman stuff. I saw some panhandler making outerspace scenes using the same method

Haha, I'm gonna make ninja stars to throw at my girlfriend when I pick her up at the airport tomorrow.

YOU SHOULD DO MORE DRAWINGS! this drawing rules!

Response to: Tablet tips and techniques Posted January 3rd, 2010 in Art

Tips for the tablet:
- Learn to draw using quick, broad strokes. You'll get the best line quality like this. Also, it's a good drawing habit because you get more energy in your drawings as opposed to slow methodical lines
- When drawing in a pixel-based program, draw at whole, quarter, or half percent magnifications. If you draw at something like 66.7%, your lines are more apt to come out jagged because the computer has to calculate the conversion points of how the line falls into pixels (I hear CS4 has kinda addressed this issue, but still. tech is just a tool we have to cater to)
- Most importantly, save all good traditional drawing techniques. Stuff doesn't change just because you're drawing digitally. Work the whole piece up at the same time. First rough your objects, then build form, etc. etc.

This might be a bit off topic, but the rest is about Cintiq.

I have a Cintiq and I'd really recommend them. Cintiq's save me a lot of time because it feels more natural. It's closer to pen and ink drawing, or drawing with a pencil, so it's a bit more intuative. I remember drawing on a tablet had a learning curve, and ultimately I never felt it justified the time to learn with the results it gave me. I ended up doing a lot of my animation on paper, scanning it in, and then using Adobe Streamline to vectorize it.

There are 2 types of Cintiq and I'd only recommend one. There is a 22" screen, and then a 12" widescreen, and I'd probably only recommend the 22". The issue here is screen real estate. In programs like Flash, you not only need space to draw but you also want to keep your tool boxes and color palettes open because it enables you to work faster. On the 12", all that space gets cut into with your layers or timeline, etc., and the space you get to actually draw is the size of a postcard. However, good drawing habits are drawing from your shoulder and using large strokes, so that's really limitting. If you're gonna cough up so much money, minds well go all the way and not kinda fuck yourself over.

Now, if you HAVE to go with the 12", you're gonna want to have a dual monitor setup, and put your toolboxes on the other screen so you have enough screen real estate to draw. But for me, time is the most important and valuable commodity. If i can buy something that makes me faster, I can do more work and earn more money. In spending $1000 more dollars, I can make tenfold that back if this product saves me the time. And that's why I could justify buying such an expensive product.

Of course, the Cintiq does have a couple of downfalls tho. If you draw slowly, your lines still turn out jagged like when using the tablet. I went from using a Graphire tablet with much less surface to draw to a 22" Cintiq. Just like with tablets, you still want to make quick, broad strokes to get nice, elegant lines.

Also, Cintiq's are notorious for having bad color calibration. I know when I was working at Nickelodeon, the art directors, compositers, and color stylists used Cintiq's, but also dual monitored with a CRT monitor to CONSTANTLY check their color decisions.

I feel so lucky to have one, and I'm constantly using it.

The biggest problem I have is drawing on the tablet while looking at the screen, but I think that comes from years of just drawing traditional stuff.

Hey guys and gals! I got a cool proposition for anybody that's interested. I'm doing my first live action film, and it's going to cost some real MONEY to turn out nice. I need money to rent equipment, feed a crew, etc. How would you like to help with a REALLY FUNNY project, and get some original artwork at the same time?

Well, I'm offering hand drawn, completely customized UGLY PORTRAITS for you and your friends. They'd make a great holiday gift for loved ones or enemies alike! I'll take pictures of you and turn it into a gruesome drawing. Gruesome is the new beautiful (ex: Nicole Richie)!!!

Portraits will be approx 8"x10" on heavy, archival illustration board. I'll be inking with archival inks too, so these ugly representations will long outlast your beautiful bodies.

You'll also get a credit listing in the credits of the film, and I'll even throw in a DVD of it when we produce it chock full of behind the scenes sketches, animatics, and fun behind the scenes magic that goes into the making of a short live action film.

I'm asking for $30 for ink portraits, and 50$ for color portraits. Shipping charges will vary depending on where you live (or if I can just drop it off to you).

If you're interested, email me: chris@katzenjammerstudios.com
I'll send you my address so you can send me the cash, and I'll also want 3 photos of the person's face who you want the portrait of. I've got an example of what I'm looking for here:
