I watched Cannibal Holocaust and sketched these. The movie was too hyped up from my friends, so I was kinda disappointed.
Hey Rockon! I think your characters RULE!
At the beginning of next week, I'm actually going to be working an animation industry job. And despite what others have told you, I think drawing other people's characters is a GREAT idea. It'll help you learn solid draftsmanship and appeal. You should keep it up. What you could maybe do is compare your drawings more to the drawings of the show. What do Spongebob artists do different that you aren't doing? How can you be more like them, and improve your skills?
You've got a great start and your characters already look pretty good. Keep copying, but it would be nice to try to draw some originals sometime in the near future too! Keep up your studies, and apply what you learn to your own drawings!
can't upload .swf's to the forum. animated this in 30 minutes last night as practice

I'm runnign CS3. I'll see if I can export a .flx file. I'm sure it's still going to compress the shit out of the video, but at least I'll be able to submit to NG. Thanks DeadSpread!
Anyway, some duck as a warmup doodle today.
dude, awesome painting skills! your portraits are really great!
Thanks Big J! yeah, it's just gonna degrade the quality a LOT. it sucks, because I use Flash to animate and stuff, but I ALWAYS use After Effects to bump stuff up and make the final product look a bit nicer (film grain, etc.)
My first gouache painting:
ack. i'm rushing. doing whole scenes over again isn't fun. but hopefully it's worth it.
i gotta figure out how to make .swf's of my final .mov files. does NG take .flv's yet?
Working on finishing my first live action short! I hope to release films next month! Been so busy, sorry Newgrounds. I miss Big J and all you guys, but I'm trying to get stuff done and we're finally gonna release. Hurray!
Almost done with my sound. Working on a live action project that I'm compositing animation on top of next week. Starting a new film. Feeling good about being productive.
I think we might launch a cartoon after June!
Anyway, crappy doodle time:
and here's the BG before i touched it for reference.
alskfjalkfdjalkrjewkar so busy!
big j: thanks! you rule!
fifty-50: haha, maybe you'll change your mind when you see it. but maybe not!
antiandy: sweet, hope you dig the old cartoony styles like i do.
zuluCS: it's all for you, man, ALL FOR YOU!
Trick #231231312:
When you got a close-up, if you gaussian blur your BG, it mimics a wide angle lens and gives you more depth! It's less about mimicing live action, and more about giving the audience a clear place to focus. It doesn't feel right to stare at the out of focus BG details, so it draws your audience eyes right where you want them to look: at your crappy animation.
Compositing! I've been doing more reading up on the subject than I have been actually compositing, but hopefully I'm learning and it doesn't look like total crap.
this is great! it's a really fun, imaginative design. i think it's kinda creepy, but that's part of the appeal for me.
i would just simplify your colors. to make a texture, it's not necessarily that you paint each hair. that doesn't make good paintings. it's about MASSING your shadows and your lights. pick where your light source is coming from, and think about where the light would hit. the surfaces that hit the light will be lighter than the darker things in shadow. you can also change the colors between light and shadow if the light is colored (like a yellow light, etc.)
here's a quickie just to show what i'm talking about
COOL! i love this psychedelic stuff! keep it comin
AWESOME! i think this is a great start, and i actually like the concept of a wacom hero. i aspire to be one, myself.
i don't think it's so much about anatomy. if you go for anatomy and you don't know it, your drawings come out lumpy and stuff. just use a simplified version of anatomy. use basic shapes for each of the major muscles, don't use too much detail. just my opinion tho.
dunno what style you're going for, but here's what i'm talking about. also, you drew the head kinda thin, might be better to make it wider and give it some depth
if you want more help, just message me! it's SUPER hard to follow art posts on this forum
big j: i'm gonna finish in the next month! buuuuut, it won't be up on the internet for nearly another year. we're gonna start releasing films in a couple months on toonhole.com. stuff i've been working on for the past two years. i'll definitely put it up on NG too and post in this thread.
another image! compositing tonight woooooo
More animation progress! Exporting from Flash and going to start compositing tonight!
Ack, Don Rickles. I suck at caricatures.
Anyway, I know I've been gone. It's for good reason!
Or I think so at least.
dude, falz333, your pages look sweet man. i think that i wanna echo everyone else's comments in the need for an idea. you got AWESOME drawing abilities, but what gets people hooked is either entertainment/story.
if you wanna learn about comics, check out some scott mcloud books! his book "understanding comics" is a great place to start. it's written as a comic and has lots of sweet ideas. your comics are going to rule, dude!
hey sinitron, this logo rocks!
just a couple things i could point out:
1.) you might wanna eliminate the tangents on the design. the hat barely touches those bones. kinda awkward design stuff IMO.
2.) the rest of the design feels 3D and solid, but those eyes are just flat shapes. maybe around the bottoms so they feel like eyes t hat fit into the mask form?
i like the first colors. it's got a better scheme, as well as saturated and desaturated colors. the purple and green one seems like weaker scheme to me.
you rule, man! can't wait for this
big j: you totally got it, man! more cleanups previews!
BigJ: No question why the ladies love the frog, right?
Just some doodles today that I did today. Still trying to bust my ass on cleanup.
HAHAHAHAHAHA GINGERS!
i'm not dead, just cleaning up. 4am cleanup sessions. life rules!
Here's the final. Watercolor, inks, and colored pencils.
Big J: I think we're gonna start releasing cartoons in June. You'll be the first to know! Hopefully we don't disappoint.
Here's color planning for my next ugly portrait. I'll post the final once i crack open teh watercolors and whatnot
Big J: You're the BEST, buddy. I appreciate your support so much, thanks man.
I'm building a cleanup portfolio. Trying to get a job anyway I can. Sorry I've been so busy and neglectful. I wanna find some time to hop on the forum and give crits and comments but I don't have much time to spare. I'm waking up in 5 hours, ugh!
just cleaning up some doodles.
hurray, it's up if anybody's interested: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/53 2183
Hey guys, everytime I make a .gif from flash, it ruins the timing and looks all crappy. Sometimes I get blue dot artifacts and stuff.
Anyway, how does everyone else make their .gifs? I have after effects and other programs. Do you export all the frames from one program and assemble them in another? Just curious. Thanks in advance for your help.
